As a bicyclist, though, you also havethree positions within the lane to choose from: theright third , the center , and the left third . Thespecific portion of the lane depends on the distinctcharacteristics of the intersection.
In order to successfully change lanes in traffic the cyclist must:
Make two moves per lane (as shown in the following illustration).
Plan ahead Scan Signal your intention

Turn Signals
Start signalling 100 feet before your turn, or when changing lanes. If you aremaking a turn that requires you to change lanes gradually work your way overto the correct side of the street while signaling. You can also stop at a crosswalk, get off your bike and walk your bike across the intersection. Plan ahead to avoidlast minute decision.
Safety Quick Tips & Other Signals
Eye contact: Remember even though you may make eye contact witha motorist that does not mean they see you. Use multiple signalingmethods when riding to ensure sa ety.
Pointing: Clearly indicate to motorist where you intend to ride bypointing. You may use this method instead o using hand signals incertain situations.
Scanning: Be ore changing course or taking a turn look over yourshoulder. This is a good way to assess the trafc situation and indicateyour intentions to motorists behind you.
