    INTRODUCTION

    The twenty-sixth Bilderberg Meeting was held at the Henry ChaunceyConference Center, Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.A., on 21, 22 and 23 April1978, under the chairmanship of Lord Home of th e Hirsel, K.T.

    There were 101 participants, drawn from a variety of fields: Government andpolitics, diplomacy, industry, trade unions, banking, the armed forces,journalism, education and specialized research institutes. They came from 18Western European countries, th e United States, Canada and variousinternational organizations.

    In accordance with th e rules a0

    dopted at each Meeting, all participants spokein a purely personal capacity, without in any way committing the governmentor organization to which they belonged. To enable participants to speakfrankly, th e discussions were confidential with no reporters being admitted.

    The Agenda was as follows:

    I. Western defense with its polit.ical implications.II. The changing structure of production and trade:

    consequences for the Western industrialized countries.

    In addition to th e above formal agenda, a half day's discussion was devotedto current problems in European-American relations.

    In opening th e meeting, the Chairman, Lord Home, read the text of ateiegram of good wishes which he had sent to the President of th e UnitedStates on behalf of all th e Bilderberg participants.
