Early Life William Henry Gates III

Father was a lawyer

Mother was part of the board of directors for First Interstate BancSystem and the United Way

Took an early interest in computers on his 8th grade and was banned with Paul Allen when caught exploiting bugs in the computer to obtain free computer time

Wrote computer program for school – which he modified to be placed with mostly female classmates

Scored 1590 out of 1600 on SAT

Dropped out of Harvard to start a business with the support of his parents

Entrepreneurship at an early age At 15, Gates and Allen went into business together,

developing a program to measure the traffic flow in Seattle, which netted $20,000

Recognizing and seizing opportunity

December 1974 – Gates and Allen saw a magazine article about the world’s first microcomputer
