• Last year Wegmans recycled 3.6 million pounds ofplastic bags to make 187,000,000 new bags for ourstores.

• 2014 Goal is to double this!• Made with 40% recycled Material (20% from Wegmans

recycling)• Return to Sender, Bag 2 Bag program• Reclaim T-sack, bread, cereal and produce bags

• Eliminated tag tie and took an inch off bag• Reduced resin by 1,000,000 lbs

• That’s 19 tractor trailers

Front-End Bags

Reusable Bags• Offer and highly promote our reusable bag

program• Through signage (in parking lots) and ads/flyers.• Keep customers interested with fresh, new artwork

seasonally.

• Our customers have purchased over 4.5million reusable shopping bags.

• Since the introduction of our reusableshopping bag in 2007, and with continuingimprovements in our plastic bags, we havebeen able to reduce our plastic usage. Thisworks out to approximately 4,000 fewerbags per day in each store!

“Keeps Fresh” vs. PolyStyrene Tray with Overwrap

Reduces Waste- Keeps product fresh longer!

Bio-based (non-food) Cutlery• Reduce the amount of plastic resin used by 30%

• Reduce amount of energy used

• When used in combination with dispenser, reduces plastic resin by 50%

• “One at a time” delivery system• Reduces waste from over consumption (grabbing more than one utensil at

a time) by 25%2 lbs of plastic per case• New, “One at a time” napkin dispenser showed immediate waste savings

of 50%• Eliminates need for wrapped utensils- 15,000 lbs of plastic• Packaging reduces cube space on a truck by 25%

• There is a cost to using bio-based instead of virgin resin butWegmans is concerned with doing the right thing.

Containers• Hybrid PP40% Talc based 40% less plastic• Used for $6 meal, Wokery and Food Bar

• At the same part weight, PP Hybrid offers lowest Carbon footprint• Talc- naturally occurring mineral- renewable• Can be used with Hot or Cold foods• Made in the USA

R&D Projects• Natural, Renewable Plastic Fillers- milk containers, bags

• Goal: Reduce our reliance on non-renewable material sources• Film Lidding- eliminates PET lid

• Save 240,661 lbs of Plastic a year 109 Tons• Self-venting material eliminates the need to cover food with a

napkin in the microwave

• In 2013 we donated 16.5 million pounds of food, stillwholesome and good to eat but not in condition to sellto local food banks

• In 2013 13.4 million pounds of food and produce wastewere composted, sent to local digesters or livestockfarms (reducing food waste in our landfills)
