Nature of ground

A soils investigation has been carried out on the site by theEngineer and the report is annexed to these Bills of Quantities.All very hard unweathered shale, ironstone, etc. the removal ofwhich necessitates the use of explosives or heavy dutyhydraulic percussion hammers (peckers), will be classified as"hard rock".

Descriptions of excavations shall be deemed to include allground conditions classifiable as "earth" described in theabove report and where conditions of a more difficult characterare indicated these are separately measured

Carting away of excavated material

Descriptions of carting away of excavated material shall bedeemed to include loading excavated material onto trucksdirectly from the excavations or, alternatively, from stock pilessituated on the building site.

The haulage of all materials shall, for payment purposes, beregarded as freehaul regardless of distance hauled, and shallapply to(i) All material excavated on site and used for filling on site.(ii) All material excavated on site and stockpiled on site.

The following quantities have been computed from thedimensions and contours shown on the drawing.

Notice

The contractor must timeously inform the Principal Agent ofthedifferent classes of material encountered so that it can bemeasured accurately. If the Principal Agent receives no priornotice from the sub-contractor to the contrary, all excavatedmaterial shall be deemed to be soft excavation.

Computation of quantities

Earthworks will be measured by volume once only inexcavation. The volumes handled will be computed from thedifference in elevations between the specified earthworkslevels, as indicated on the relevant Bulk Earthworks drawings,Rates shall include for forming banks, etc. as required.

Taking and testing of samples

The contractor shall engage the services of an approvedindepent testing laboratory for the testing of materials, andquality testing of layer works, so as to ensure that his workconforms to the specifications. Results of these tests shall besubmitted to the Engineer timeously. Tests shall be carried outby the Contractor at a rate of at least 1 test per 100m2 ofeach layer.

The tendered unit rates shall be deemed to include the cost ofall control testing, and no additional claims shall be entertainedin this respect.

Should control testing arranged by the Contractor not meantherequirements of the Specification, the Engineer shall have theright to conduct all such other testing at the Contractor'sexpense.

Prices for filling are to include for all necessary density tests inaccordance with SABS 1200D

SUPPLEMENTARY PREAMBLES

Cost of tests

The costs of making, storing and testing of concrete test cubesas required under clause 7 'Tests' of SABS 1200 G shallinclude the cost of providing cube moulds necessary for thepurpose, for testing costs and for submitting reports on thetests to the Principal Agent. The testing shall be undertaken byan independent firm or institution nominated by the Contractorto the approval of the Principal Agent. (Test cubes aremeasured separately)

Formwork

Descriptions of formwork shall be deemed to include use andwaste only (except where described as left in or permanent),for fitting together in the required forms, wedging, plumbingand fixing to true angles and surfaces as necessary to ensureeasy release during stripping and for reconditioning asnecessary before re-use

The vertical strutting shall be carried down to such constructionas is sufficiently strong to afford the required support withoutdamage and shall remain in position until the newlyconstructed work is able to support itself

Formwork to soffits of solid slabs etc., shall be deemed to beto slabs not exceeding 250mm thick unless otherwisedescribed

Formwork to sides of bases, pile caps, ground beams, etc., willonly be measured where it is prescribed by the Engineer fordesign reasons. Formwork necessitated by irregularity orcollapse of excavated faces will not be measured and the costthereof shall be deemed to be included in the allowance fortaking the risk of collapse of the sides of the excavations,provision for which is made in Earthworks
