steep 33 percent drop from the prior year. The industry’s total volume of downloaded tracks likewise dipped with the 411.5 million total, representing a 27 percent decline.

Aldean’s Rearview Town ruled country’s album sales, the most traditional form of transactions in the current consumption scheme. It accrued 463,000 purchases to outdistance Carrie Underwood’s Cry Pretty (No. 2, 401,000 sales) and Keith Urban’s Graffiti U (No. 3, 273,000 sales). Stapleton nailed down the No. 4-6 positions with Traveller and both volumes of From A Room.

Country totaled 14.14 million album sales in 2018, receding 28.5 percent from its 2017 numbers. That percentage was larger than the industry as a whole, which logged 141.4 million album sales, a 17.7 percent decline.

Nielsen Music’s 2018 tracking year ran from Dec. 29, 2017, through Jan. 3, 2019, a quirk in the calendar that covered 53 chart weeks instead of the usual 52. For comparison, Nielsen Music used a 53-week year to represent 2017: Dec. 30, 2016, through Jan. 4, 2018. Thus, the 2017 statistical base for this story is slightly different than the numbers that were compiled a year ago, based on the official 52-week calendar.

Following are the 10 best-selling country albums and tracks for 2018, as well as the genre’s 10 most-streamed titles:

Dustin Lynch’s “Good Girl” (Broken Bow) ascends 2-1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated Jan. 19), up 11 percent to 41.2 million audience impressions in the tracking week ending Jan. 13, according to Nielsen Music.

The song becomes his sixth Country Airplay No. 1 and first as a writer. He co-authored it with Justin Ebach, who notches the second No. 1 he has penned, and Andy Albert, who achieves his first.

“Shout-out to all of you who continue to support and believe,” Lynch tells Billboard. “Before we even had the lyric finished on this song, I knew it was a special one, and, man, it has been. What a way to kick off 2019.”

“Good Gi rl ” — t he lead si ngle f rom h is upcoming fourth full-studio album — is Lynch’s first Country Airplay No. 1 since “Small Town Boy,” which led for fou r weeks star t ing in September 2017. Before that, he reigned with “Seein’ Red” (February 2017, one week), “Mind Reader” (2016, one), “Hell of a Night” (2015, one) and “Where It’s At (Yep, Yep)” (2014, two). He first reached the chart’s top 10 with his debut hit, the No. 2-peaking “Cowboys and Angels,” in 2012.

A s “Gi rl ” reaches t he C ou nt r y A i r play penthouse in its 37th week on the chart, Lynch completes his second-longest trip to No. 1: “Hell of a Night” rose to the top in its 44th frame.

The song concurrently climbs 10-8 for a new peak on the airplay-, streaming- and sales-based Hot Country Songs chart.

DYNAMIC DUO Dan + Shay’s “Speechless” (Warner Bros./WAR) leads for an eighth week atop Hot Country Songs while their previous single, “Tequila,” resides at its No. 2 peak for an 18th week, extending its mark for the most weeks peaking at the runner-up spot. The duo place at Nos. 1 and 2 simultaneously for a fifth week, the most among duos or groups and second only to Luke Bryan, who concurrently controlled the top two spots on Hot Country Songs for nine weeks in 2014.

“Speechless” scores a 10th week atop Country Digital Song Sales (14,000 sold, down 13 percent), holds at its No. 2 high on Country Streaming Songs (11.3 million U.S. streams, up 8 percent) and dips to No. 2 after four weeks atop Country Airplay (38.4 million audience impressions).

BRYAN ‘MAKES’ TOP 10 Luke Bryan’s “What Makes You Country” (Capitol Nashville) rises 11-10 on Country Airplay, increasing by 4 percent to

26.6 million audience impressions.It is Bryan’s 27th Country Airplay top 10,

a total that includes 20 No. 1s. He ties Carrie Underwood for 15th place among all acts for the most top 10s, dating to the chart’s launch 29 years ago this week (Jan. 20, 1990). George Strait leads, with 61 top 10s.

Bryan is working on a streak of 13 straight Country Airplay leaders, the longest active run among all artists. His previous single, “Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset,” topped the chart for two weeks in September 2018.

HERE’S DOLLY Legend Dolly Parton achieves her 44th Top Country Albums top 10 as her 2003 album Ultimate Dolly Parton re-enters the chart for the first time since 2004, surging by 172 percent to 8,000 equivalent album units. The set debuted at its former No. 20 peak in June 2003.

Why the boost? The album includes Parton’s 1977 five-week Hot Country Songs No. 1 “Here You Come Again,” which is being used to promote

all-you-can-eat riblets, shrimp and chicken tenders in a TV commercial for Applebee’s Grill & Bar. The song surges by 39 percent to 3,000 downloads sold in the tracking week.

Parton extends her record for the most Top Country Albums top 10s among women and ranks second overall only to Willie Nelson, with 51.

INJURED GARTH FAN COMPENSATEDA Kentucky woman who nearly lost an eye in a freak accident at a Garth Brooks concert is counting her blessings after receiving a $65,000 balloon payment.

Jean Ann Crenshaw thought she had an ideal seat when she and four friends drove to Nashville for a Dec. 9, 2017, concert at Bridgestone Arena, the first show in the final city on Brooks’ three-year tour. But a planned balloon-and-confetti drop honoring songwriter Mitch Rosell (who penned Brooks’ No. 1 Country Airplay single “Ask Me How I Know”) went awry. When the balloons failed to drop, a worker used a metal pole to pry the rigging loose, but dropped the shaft into the audience in the process. Crenshaw was looking up, attempting to collect one of the balloons, but never saw the pole until it hit her below the eye, requiring stitches and surgery.

Iden Entertainment, the balloon company, took responsibility for the mishap. (In a fan video posted on YouTube, the pole can briefly be seen in the right-hand portion of the crowd just after the 4:05 mark.)

Crenshaw’s nose was broken, scar tissue blocked her tear ducts, and she still feels occasional shooting pain from nerve damage near the eye. Her face remained bruised and swollen for several months, and her husband received nasty glares from strangers who, presumably, thought he had beaten her.

Iden’s insurance company, State Farm, agreed to a $65,000 settlement, covering $25,000 in medical fees and $40,000 for additional damages.

The employee who dropped the pole was shaken by the incident, according to Iden GM/vp R.J. Monds, who said it was the first accident the company had experienced among 2,000-plus balloon drops in over two decades of business. The employee was reprimanded, though he continues to work for Iden. Monds said the company never tried to deny its responsibility.

“We do something wrong, we take ownership,” he said. Crenshaw and her friends all received refunds for the show, and arena

representatives reached out to her two days after the accident. Someone from Brooks’ team took down her contact info at the concert before she was transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center, though the team never contacted her after that. She admits she was “disappointed,” and though she’s less enthusiastic about seeing a full Brooks concert, she says she might still end up going to one of his upcoming stadium shows. Since most stadiums do not have roofs, she’s less likely to be injured by overhead objects.

“The worst that could happen,” she says, “is a bird could poo on you.”

MUSIC NOTESWhen Loretta Lynn turns 87 on April 14, blowing out the candles on the cake will be nothing next to the blowout that’s planned earlier in the month. She will be the subject of an April 1 tribute, Loretta Lynn: An All-Star Birthday Celebration Concert, at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Garth Brooks helped announce the event on Jan. 14, with Keith Urban, Miranda Lambert, George Strait, Little Big Town, Kacey Musgraves and Alan Jackson among a boatload of artists planning to perform. Tickets go on sale Jan. 18, with net proceeds benefiting the Opry Trust Fund and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

Craig Morgan officially inducted Mark Wills into the Grand Ole Opry on Jan. 11 during an installment of the WSM-AM Nashville show held at the Ryman Auditorium. It was also a landmark moment for Arista Nashville artist Carlton Anderson, who made his Opry debut. “I did a lot of playing downtown when I moved down here,” Anderson told Billboard staff during a Jan. 9 visit to the Nashville office. “I’ve walked by that building and rubbed my hands on it a million times, just hoping and praying all this work down there and on the road was going to pay off.” Coinciding with the Opry debut, Arista released two new Anderson tracks to digital providers: “Country Music Made Me Do It” and “Keep Abilene Beautiful.” With the title track already at radio, Curb will issue Dylan Scott’s next EP, Nothing to Do Town, on April 26. The six-song project is among a handful of newly announced titles that have received release dates. Kieran Kane and Rayna Gellert’s When the Sun Goes Down arrives March 20, and Steve Earle & The Dukes’ Guy — a tribute to the late Guy Clark with guests Emmylou Harris, Jerry Jeff Walker and Rodney Crowell — comes out March 29. Additionally, Columbia Nashville/Legacy slipped a 40-track retrospective, The Essential Janie Fricke, into the marketplace on Dec. 28. “Hit” means something different to Brad Paisley than it does to a baseball player or a quarterback. But he and a bunch of athletes were a hit at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif., on Jan. 13 with a sold-out softball game that raised more than $1 million for victims of local fires and the November shooting at the Borderline club. Paisley took the field with two NFL quarterbacks — Baker Mayfield and Matt Leinert — plus a bundle of MLB players, including Christian Yelich, Ryan Braun, Mike Moustakas and Justin Turner.

Amid all of the holiday bustle at the end of last year, Kane Brown and his team had an extra layer of activity to address.

As the first week of December drew to a close, they had set “Homesick” — a sweet midtempo ballad that already had a military-themed welcome-home video in circulation — as a first single for 2019. Brown even did an interview or two to make it official.

By Dec. 10, “Good As You” — bolstered by a video that incorporates scenes from Brown’s Oct. 12 wedding to Katelyn Jae — took the slot, and “Homesick” was shelved for likely future release.

“ ‘Good As You’ just felt more January,” reasons Brown. “It’s not summer yet, but you’re waiting for it to get warm, like closer to March, and once that warmth starts to come around, it’s just a happy song, and I want people to have a smile on their face.”

“Homesick” co-writer Matthew McGinn may have been disappointed with the move, but it was great news for “Good As You” co-writers Shy Carter and Will Weatherly. And, perhaps, a wash for Taylor Phillips and Brock Berryhill, who co-wrote both songs. But even those two were mildly shocked at the change in single, in part because it came without warning.

“My stomach dropped,” says Phillips, noting that his mother actually spotted the switch online. “I looked on his Facebook, and that was the first time I saw it. By the grace of God, I had co-written both of them. It didn’t devastate me too much. It just kind of caught me off guard.”

It might well have surprised listeners a hair, too, since “Good As You” is a slight departure. Brown’s rich, deeper tones have become a trademark in his swift ascent to stardom, but this song — the second track on new album Experiment — reaches into his basement only for a note or two at a time. The meat of the melody is pitched in a much higher and more vulnerable range than he typically mines.

“With this record, I wanted something that sounded different, and ‘Good As You’ is one of those songs that’s outside the box for me,” he says. “It’s a different tone of my voice and everything, and that’s what I wanted to start 2019 with: something that doesn’t sound like anything that I’ve released yet.”

“Good As You” came together in a f lurry once they had the basic core, though it took hours to find the starting point. Brown took Phillips, Berryhill and Weatherly with him for a weekend tour run that started at Riverfront Park in Peoria, Ill., on June 16. Minutes after the bus left Nashville, Brown messaged Carter and encouraged him to swoop over from St. Louis and pitch in on the writing session.

They tried several other musical ideas first, and none of them really jelled. The guys were, believes Phillips, trying too hard to write a wedding song. Adding to the pressure, he knew that whatever they created would need to satisfy the bride, too.

“Katelyn is a hard critic,” says Phillips. “I’ve learned that. If she loves it, then he’s going to love it. I don’t feel like I write songs for Kane Brown. I feel like I write songs for Kane and Katelyn Brown.”

As the afternoon turned into early evening, they still had nothing of substance. Finally, Carter and Brown retreated to the back of the bus, and Carter found a leisurely groove on the mandolin that matches his personality.

“He just has this vibe and energy to him that’s really special,” notes Berryhill. “He’s very chill.”

When Carter replayed that initial thread for the full group, Berryhill re-created it on a Stratocaster, filling in the chord structure and emphasizing its Memphis soul feel. Weatherly captured that on a laptop, adding in some slappy percussive effects on the downbeat. Then the words came pouring out in two batches: liquid, conversational verses that contrast with more stringent, on-the-beat chorus rhythms.

“I feel like we wrote a verse to one song, and we wrote a different chorus to a different song, and we had to make them work together,” says Phillips.

“They were a little bit off.”So were some of the words. “Girl, you’re

more than just the surface” compliments the woman’s depth in a way that’s unconventional, maybe even grammatically incorrect, but still gets the job done.

“I didn’t know what it meant, but it doesn’t sound wrong,” notes Brown.

And the hook — “I just wanna be good as you” — would likely be “as good as you” if the writers were concerned about their grades in English class. They tried to do it correctly but didn’t feel it worked.

“The ‘as’ would have thrown the syncopation of that melody off a little bit,” says Phillips. “Still would have worked, but it would have felt a little more cluttered. I don’t know. I felt like it hit.”

Likewise, the song’s overall message comes through, though if the premise is taken literally,

“I just wanna be good as you” seems more appropriate to say to a mentor or role model than to someone in an equal partnership.

“That was a discussion that came up,” recalls Berryhill. “But with the three of us I know that are married out of the people who wrote this song, we all would agree that we’re not as good as our wives. There’s a bigger message hidden in that. I can’t say that’s wrong.”

They finished a rough demo quickly while Brown played the show that night, and back on the bus, Brown took a quick video of the guys singing along with it. He was so enamored that he shared it on social media a little before 1 a.m.

Producer Dann Huff (Keith Urban, Brantley Gilbert) kept the spirit of that demo intact, making only subtle changes in the final recording. He slowed the tempo a hair and delayed drummer Aaron Sterling’s full arrival until the second verse. Huff used Berryhill’s introductory notes from the demo’s guitar solo as a building block before changing up the back half. And he added some echo to the vocal production, though the bulk of it got removed.

“He was using this delay, so every time I would say, ‘Good as you,’ it would say, ‘Good as you’ again,” remembers Brown. “It made it feel a little more pop than what it already sounds, and Katelyn is the one that pointed that out. I usually always go with what she says.”

Once “Good As You” replaced “Homesick” as the single, RCA released it to country radio via PlayMPE on Dec. 17. It debuted at No. 55 on the Country Airplay chart dated Jan. 12, 2019 (it made a quick splash at No. 17 on Hot Country Songs even before it became a single). It’s currently at No. 37 on Country Airplay, with “Homesick” very much in the mix as a possible later single.

“When I hear that song, there’s something that just puts a smile on my face, and I just hope that for other people as well,” says Brown. “It’s that thing guys want to tell their girls and they don’t really know how to do it, and hopefully, if they hear that song, they can be like, ‘Hey, here’s what I feel about you.’ ”

CHARTS LEGENDRANKINGSCountry Airplay is ranked by total audience impressions for the week ending Sunday based on monitored airplay of 149 stations by Nielsen BDS. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2019, Arbitron Inc.) Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 109 stations, ranked by total plays.

BULLETSl Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored

station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week.

TIESOn Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first.

RECURRENTSOn Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still

gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of (non-bulleted) audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks or if they post a third consecutive week of decline in plays after 10 weeks.

HOT SHOT DEBUTAwarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively.

MOST ADDEDThe total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds.

MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/PLAYSMost Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively.

AIRPOWERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience.

BREAKERAwarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time.
