Pre Cleaning

Remove straw, weed seeds and soil from paddy Remove immatured grains Remove dust


De Stoning

Removal of stones and immatured paddy


PARBOILING & DRYING PROCESS


Parboiling Stages

Pretreating the paddy before milling is known as parboiling. This process is optional and required only to produce boiled rice. It involve the following 3 stages.1. Soaking – Soak the paddy in hot water2. Cooking – Drain the water and inject steam3. Drying – Dry till reach the required moisture level


Soaking

Paddy is soaked in soaking tanks


Cooking

Steam is injected inside the cookerAllow paddy to boilThis is fully automated using PLC and sensors


Drying Using Fluidised Bed Dryer

Paddy should be dried before milling Remove high moisture content 6-8% from paddy in single pass Blowers and heat exchangers are part of the FBD


Drying

Driers remove the Moisture gradually


Advantages Of Parboiling

Higher head rice yield Parboiled paddy/rice gets longer shelf life Rich in nutrition Market for parboiled paddy/rice is high


Parboiling – Old Method

Need more labour and time since soaking continues in days

Output quality depends on operator qualityPossibility of automation is limited Increase the production will involve huge investmentCooking in tanks change the colour of riceDepending upon the type of rice(steam rice, semi-

boiled rice, boiled rice) different tanks and driers to be installed

Quality of the output among batches will vary


Parboiling – Modern Method

Small work force is required only to monitor the automated process

Soaking, cooking and drying are chain of process controlled by timers

Scale up cost is low since the same human and power is enough

All batch outputs will be same The entire process(soaking, cooking, drying) will be finished in

hours Efficiency is high Durability of equipments is high In line cooking is the key factor


De-Husking

It is the process of removing husk layer from the paddy

Olden days it was done using mortar and pestlesModern rice mills using friction techniqueFirst level will do the separation of husk and

paddySecond level husk is removed by suctionGood husker will remove 90% of the husk in a

single pass.


Paddy Separation

Husk removed rice will fed to paddy separator Here unhulled paddy rice is separated from the brown rice Based on the gravity, size and buoyancy, it separate the paddy

and brown rice


Polishing

Remove the bran layer and germ from brown rice, It is also known as whitening

Apply friction to the grain surface either by rubbing the grains against an abrasive surface or against each other.

Range of bran removal will between 8-10% of the total paddy weight


Grading

Segregation of head rice, large and broken rice.


Mist Polishing

White rice is polished with the help of water to appear silky


Colour Sorting

Separation of white rice from black rice and discoloured rice


Mechanical Storage Solutions

Silos are used to store paddy and rice

Level indicators are used in Silos to check the storage level

Temperature indicators are used to know the temperature
