An independent clause contains a subject and a predicate; it makes sense by itself.Example: - I enjoy sitting by the fireplace and reading.- Dhika went to the mall- Wulan was reading the English papers about Simple sentence.- He went to the park and the ride was broken. This is an example of two independent clauses together in one sentence.

I. Independent clauseII.SentencesThe sentence is traditionally (and inadequately) defined as a word or group of words that expresses a complete idea and that includes a subject and a verb.Sentence is the largest independent unit of grammar: it begins with a capital letter and ends with a period, question mark, or exclamation point.

Example: - I eat. - I love You. - Do you love me too?- Who am I ?- I eat pizza and spaghetti, and then I die.

Characteristic:

o Contain a subjecto Contain a verbo It begans with a capital letter o Ends with period, question mark, or exclamation point

Parts of a Sentence:

1)SubjectSubject is the part of a sentence or clause that commonly indicates (a) what it is about, or (b) who or what performs the action (that is, the agent). Subject is that which answers the question who or what placed before the predicate, and which at the same time names that of which the predicate says something.The subject of simple sentence may be:

a.Noun There seems to be no interval between greatness and meanness." b.Pronoun"We are fortified by every heroic anecdote."c.Infinitive phrase"To enumerate and analyze these relations is to teach the science of method."d.Gerund"There will be sleeping enough in the grave;" "What signifies wishing and hoping for better things?e.Adjective used as noun"The good are befriended even by weakness and defect;" "The dead are there."f.Adverb"Then is the moment for the humming bird to secure the insects."g.In the interrogative sentence"When should this scientific education be commenced?"The subject is found after the verb.

2)Predicate Predicate of a sentence is a verb or verb phrase which says something about the subject. 3)VerbVerb is the part of speech (or word class) that describes an action or occurrence or indicates a state of being.4)ObjectObject is a word or group of words, functioning as a noun or a pronoun, that is influenced by a verb (direct object), a verbal (indirect object), or a preposition (object of a preposition).

a.The DIRECT OBJECT is that word or expression which answers the question who or what placed after the verb; or the direct object names that toward which the action of the predicate is directed.Example: I enjoying the holiday.

b.The INDIRECT OBJECT is a noun or its equivalent used as the modifier of a verb or verbal to name the person or thing for whose benefit an action is performed.Example: I call him.

5)The complements. A complement is a word added to a verb of incomplete predication to complete its meaning.

A sentence with only one independent clause (also known as a main clause) and no dependent clauses. Example:O I run. This simple sentence has one independent clause which contains one subject, I, and one predicate, run.o The girl ran into her bedroom.This simple sentence has one independent clause which contains one subject, girl, and one predicate, ran into her bedroom. The predicate is a verb phrase that consists of more than one word.

III.Simple sentencesCompounding elements and patterns of simple sentence:1)Subject

O Juan and Arturo play football every afternoon.S + S + V + O This sentence contains a compound subjectO Jaja and Jojo loving Ninta everyday.S + S + V + O O Bintang and Babeh eat bananaS + S + V + O

2)Verb

O Alicia goes to the library and studies every day.S + V + O + V + O + advThis sentence contains a compound verb and compound object. o Bintang and Babeh always rowdy and noisy in the classS + S + V + V + O

oIn the backyard, the dog barked and howled at the cat.Prepositional + S + V + V + OThis simple sentence has one independent clause which contains one subject, dog, and one predicate, barked and howled at the cat. This predicate has two verbs, known as a compound predicate: barked and howled. This compound verb should not be confused with a compound sentence. In the backyard and at the cat are prepositional phrases.

3)AdjectiveShe is smart and beautifulS + adj + adj

This class is always rowdy and noisyS + adj + adj

4)ObjectI always study in college and homeS + V + O + OI have a dog and a cat.S + V + O + OI love you and herS+ V + O + O

5)Adverb

Dhika ride bicycle very slowly and carefullyS + V + adv + adv

EXERCISE a. Pauline and Bruno have a big argument every summer over where they should spend their summer vacation. b. Pauline loves to go to the beach and spend her days sunbathing.

The correct response is b. There is only one independent clause here, and no dependent clause. The "and" is connecting two infinitive phrases ("to go" and "[to] spend").Which is a simple sentence ?a. Acep dislikes sitting on the beach; he always gets a nasty sunburn.b.Seruni tends to get bored sitting on the beach, watching the waves, getting sand in his swimsuit, and reading detective novels for a week.

The correct response is b. There is only one independent clause in this sentence. The participles -- "sitting," "watching," "getting," and "reading" -- are verb forms, not verbs, and do not constitute a clause. Which is a simple sentence ?a.
