We are always proud of our school and its wonderful students and last week was no exception. On Thursday we held Literacy and Numeracy Week activities from recess until lunch. The whole school took part with our secondary students acting as leaders for the mixed age groups. It was a pleasure to see the way the students co-operated and worked as a team to complete the activities and a great pleasure to watch our secondary students act as helpful, responsible leaders. On Friday the annual 4 Ways Sports Day was held at our school. We had many students from other schools visit for the day. Again, our secondary students stepped up to take on leadership roles and help with the running of the sporting

activities, by refereeing, supporting, encouraging and organising. On Saturday a train tour visited our town and three of our secondary students, Paij Glover, Danielle Kaperonis and Kimberly Haldeman volunteered their time to

help the CWA ladies with the catering. There were many positive comments about the professional way they conducted themselves and their work ethic. Proud? You bet!

Our school has goals to help our students to become the best learners they can be and to become productive citizens who can go out into society when they leave school and be successful. These whole school and community events help build that sense of supporting others and the community and our school does this particularly well. Our 3/4 class are being presented with a thumb drive which has the movie, “The Wheels on the Bus” on it.

We hope all family members will enjoy this memento of their great work for years to come. If you haven’t seen it, jump onto the school website .There are great photos of our school events as well as the latest Bulletins. We update the website regularly. This week we have a select group of Year 8 students attending an excursion to the University of NSW organised by the ASPIRE program. We are looking forward to

hear about this in our next Bulletin. At our small school we work hard to make sure our students get as many experiences as possible to expose them to a wider view of the world. Video Surveillance

After being broken into twice we have taken the step of installing video surveillance cameras. The film from the cameras is saved off site. It is sad that we have had to come to this in our small community and we know that everyone is as disappointed as we are. If you have any information at all please let either Marg Haley or Sam Perfrement know. For evil to flourish, it only requires good men to do nothing.

Camp Yarramundi Excursion 21st-24th August 2012 Twenty eight secondary students (years 7-10) travelled to Camp Yarramundi on Tuesday 21st August to participate in a fitness camp. After an early morning start we arrived at Camp Yarramundi at lunch time, ready to start the activities. The group was split into two smaller groups for the next 21/2 days and during that time completed the following activities: Initiatives- the group had to work together to solve a number of ‘problems’, sometimes without being able to talk to one another after the initial discussion period. Flying Fox High Ropes Abseiling Archery Alpine Rescue – where they had to again work as a team to carry a person (a plastic drum) and some treasure(another plastic drum) around a course without touching the ground, not as easy as it might sound Rock Climbing Artificial Cave Maze Giant Swing All of these activities were very challenging in their own way and students are to be commended on the way they participated in each activity and also supported and encouraged one another. The groups of students on the belay teams at the rock climbing deserve special mention for their patience holding other students up while they attempted to climb the wall on what was an unseasonably hot day. Evening activities included a games night, a camp fire and a trivia night where students had to answer questions about modern music- luckily staff were not expected to participate in the trivia night as we had no idea of any of the music questions and would have disadvantaged any team we were put on! Friday morning we left the camp after breakfast and travelled back to Katoomba where we visited Echo Point to view The Three Sisters and hear the Aboriginal legend behind their formation. After the very hot stormy day we had at Camp Yarramundi on Thursday it was a shock to get off the coach on Friday in freezing cold conditions and strong winds. From Echo Point we travelled to Scenic World where we caught the Scenic Train down the mountain, completed a rainforest walk along the valley floor then caught the cable car back up to the top of the cliff. Next stop was Lithgow for lunch at McDonalds then home again.

Defence Force Visit Last Wednesday, 29th August, two officers from the Defence Force Recruitment Service at Newcastle visited the school to talk to students in Years 9-12. The two officers who did visit were Cpl Ian Leggett, a vehicle mechanic in the army and POET Saul McLean, an electronics technician in the navy. After a brief outline of their respective careers the men went on to talk about the range of careers available in the Defence Force and the pathways required to achieve these careers. Overall there are 300 jobs available in the services, either full time or part time. Students can either complete Year 12 and apply to enrol in Officer Entry, either by applying to go to ADFA, applying for a university scholarship or by direct entry as an officer. To apply at this level students need to have passes in their HSC in English and three other board accredited subjects. The subjects required vary, depending on the area the student wishes to study . The other method of entry is General Entry. Students can apply to join at 161/2, ready to start training at 17.There are 26 trades available through the Defence Forces as well as a range of non technical trades. To gain entry at this level students must complete Year 10 with passes in English, Mathematics, Science and one other subject. Students will also be asked to provide their Year 10 semester 1 and 2 school reports. There is a Defence Work Experience Programme available for students in year 10 to spend a week with a branch of the forces and learn more about what is involved. For students at Binnaway this would probably mean travelling to, and spending the week at Singleton if interested in the Army, or travelling to Williamtown near Newcastle if interested in the Air Force. Anyone who is interested in learning more about a career in the Defence Forces can either talk to me at school or log onto www.defencejobs.gov.au M Anderson

4 Ways Sports Day

Students in Years 3 to 6 from Coolah, Coonabarabran and Mendooran came to Binnaway for the 4 Ways Sports Day. The day started at 10am with students being divided into 16 groups. The students then rotated around 8 stations spending 20 minutes at each. The students had a great day interacting with students with other schools. After lunch there were some fun relays with balloons, hoops and glasses of water before they left at 2pm. A BIG Thank You to the secondary students who helped at each station. They did a great job.

Thank you from CWA Binnaway CWA would like to thank the three Year 9 girls, Paij Glover, Kimberly Haldeman and Danielle Kaperonis, who helped serve the meal for the visitors in town who came on the vintage train on Saturday. The girls did a great job and were great ambassadors for the school and the Binnaway community. The visitors were very impressed by the polite, professional way the girls worked on the day. We received this email message today. My husband and I were passengers on the steam engine 3642 that visited Binnaway very recently. As such, we were entertained for the evening meal at the local Bowling Club and treated to a lovely time by the CWA. Also serving and assisting were 3 lovely senior students from your school. We would very much like to convey our personal thanks to these lovely young ladies, who did such a magnificent job. I have taken the time to read your school motto, and without doubt, this sentiment was indeed exemplified in the caring way they greeted and helped those visiting. They were just lovely young folk, and great ambassadors for the school, indeed the township. Please convey our sincerest thanks, and we will carry lovely memories of our visit, thanks to your students. Kindest Regards Mr & Mrs Peter and Robyn Roberts

Year 3/4 are now the proud owners of their first film. They wrote the story line, they turned it into a script, they learnt their lines and acted their parts. Over two days of filming and repeating scenes again and again, John Merkel was able to edit it down to the six minutes that can now also be viewed on the school’s website. Who knows where we may see these budding film writers and actors in the future!

Binnaway Junior Sports Club Twenty boys, aged from 14 to 16, from eleven different towns all combined to make up this year’s Binnaway/Baradine/Coonamble 16s rugby league team. This team consists of Graham Adams, Wyatte Andrews, William Hay, Lewis Varty, Jacob Murray, Dean Evans (Baradine), Tray Blattman, Cody Canham (Coonamble), Jokota Bowling (Gwabegar), Travis Couley (Wee Waa), William Hain (New Mollyan), James Harris (Coonabarabran), John Monk, Steven Leask, Jamie Sharpe, Robert Austin (Mendooran), Albert Nolan (Neilrex), Evan Ryan (Gulargambone), Saxon Whipper (Binnaway) and Joe Bowen (Weetaliba). Being a bit rusty throughout the competition games, winning just two games out of eight, they are coming good when it really matters – during the finals series. On Saturday 25th August, they came up against Coolah/Dunedoo in the minor semi-finals, an opponent which they hadn’t defeated previously, and won 10-4, allowing them to move on to the major semi-finals, coming up against Gilgandra in Gulgong on the 1st September. Coaches Peter Leask, of Mendooran, and Rupert Thorpe, of Baradine, are both extremely proud of the boys’ efforts, sighting obvious difficulties in getting together for training, due to their variation in hometowns, as a hindrance in their 2012 campaign. The side has exceeded Group XIV’s expectations in making it to the final three, being up there with Coonabarabran and Gilgandra. Well done so far boys and we wish you the best for the remainder of the finals series! Grace Leask
