NEW ZEALAND: A LAND OF INNOVATION IN BIOACTIVES,
AGRICULTURE, NUTRITION AND HUMAN HEALTH
New Zealand has long been considered a land of innovation
in the area of food, nutrition and human health. Evidence of
this proud tradition can be found as far back as 1904 when
a small baby food manufacturing company was formed in
Bunnythorpe, New Zealand to supply dried milk powder
to the United Kingdom. That New Zealand company was
Glaxo, the forerunner of the present day multinational
pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, or GSK.
Today New Zealands dairy industry is
responsible for over a third of the global
dairy trade. New Zealand is also the
worlds largest exporter of lamb and
sheep meat products and sustainably
harvests fish and marine products from
its coastal fishing zone the fourth
largest coastal fishing zone in the world. The horticultural industry too has
a long tradition of quality supply
and innovation.
New Zealand was the first country to
domesticate and commercialise the
kiwifruit, with the first exports of this
New Zealand-grown fruit to the United
Kingdom and the United States occurring
in the 1950s.
As a result of having over a century
of excellence in food production and
agriculture, a growing bioactives industry
has naturally evolved. New Zealand isuniquely placed to provide the highest
quality, innovative and sustainable
bioactives to the rest of the world.
Key points that differentiateNew Zealands bioactives sector:
unique animal and plant biodiversity
found nowhere else in the world
high quality raw material production
with naturally high levels of key
bioactives clean, sustainable and unpolluted
soil and water for optimal growing
conditions and yield without significant
capacity constraints
government oversight of quality
standards: GMO, BSE and disease
free status; as well as antibiotic and
hormone free status in animal produce
a world leader in food and agricultural
traceability that prevents product
adulteration in the supply chain
well-developed and integrated
research organisations, universitiesand medical facilities to drive future
research and development
a robust bioactives industry built
on specialised and experienced
export businesses.

Scientists will often suggest that
geographic isolation leads to variation
and innovation within species. There are
very few regions of the world where this
is more evident than in New Zealand.
With its lush and fertile grassland plains,
the geography of New Zealand drives
the countrys agricultural economy.
The latitude ensures a year-roundtemperate climate that promotes grass-
fed livestock, arable grain productionand horticulture. Less well known is the
fact that because of the seasonal hole
in the ozone layer that migrates from
the Antarctic pole each year and rests
over the country, New Zealand produces
some of the most bioactively rich and
nutritionally dense produce in the world.
Compared to many other countries in the
world, there are a high number of native
species of flora and fauna that are found
only within New Zealand:
80 percent of all vascular plants
70 percent of all native terrestrial
and freshwater birds
all native amphibians
all reptiles
90 percent of freshwater fish.
But the process of identifying flora
and fauna is far from complete.
Of New Zealands estimated 20,000
fungi species, for example, only about4,500 are known and characterised,
providing great potential for
prospecting new bioactives.
ITS LOCATION MAKES NEW ZEALAND SO SPECIAL
New Zealand produces some of the most bioactively rich and

NEW ZEALANDSUNSHINEMAKES A BIG
DIFFERENCE
It is well known by international research scientists
who study the effect of the atmosphere on plants
and animals that New Zealands location in the
South Pacific represents a unique case study
into the effects ofhaving a seasonal hole in the
ozone layer. The ozone layer acts as a natural
filter in the atmosphere, which protects plant
and animals from the increased UV irradiationfrom sunlight. Annually, scientists from around
the world come to New Zealand to examine the
impact of high UVB sunlight on plants and
animals due to this natural hole in the ozone
layer.

These elevated compounds from
New Zealand-grown plants canpotentially improve the overall health
of the human diet because these
natural bioactive compounds exhibit
potent antioxidant and other functional
properties that promote health.
For example, on average one kilogram
of Bing sweet cherries grown in
New Zealand will have 238 percent
higher levels of anthocyanin (red colour
pigment, which is known for a variety of
health benefits including cardiovascular
health) and a 290 percent increase in
antioxidant capacity (measured using
oxygen radical absorbance capacity orORAC) when compared to one kilogram
of Bing sweet cherries grown in
United States3.
As further evidence of this UV effect,
in 2011 a research scientist from ARS
Western Regional Research Centre in
California published a report that showeda moderate dose of UVB light given
to fresh, sliced carrots for 14 seconds
can boost their antioxidant capacity
threefold. The research went on to
explain that exposing carrots to UVB light
causes a stress response and these plants
respond by increasing their productionof natural bioactive compounds including
plant phenolics. Some plant phenolics
such as those found in green tea, are
powerful antioxidants with a range of
health benefits4.
According to these researchers, the
idea of using UVB light to enrich thebioactives and antioxidant levels of
fresh produce such as fruits, vegetablesor other medicinal botanicals present
exciting opportunities for further
investigation.
From comparative research, it has
been shown that New Zealand has a
40 percent greater UVB light level than
its geographically matched location
(longitude, latitude and altitude)in the
Northern hemisphere1.
For those who enjoy the unique lifestyle
offered in New Zealand, the higher UVBlevels require summer time precautions
such as protecting the skin with
sunblock, and wide-brimmed hats. But
what has been discovered is that plants
also take precautions to avoid over-
exposure to UV light.
Plants do this by producing secondary
metabolites. These include bioactives
such as flavonoids, phenolic compound,
alkaloids, essential oils, etc as well as
phytoestrogens, which are considered
important compounds often exhibiting
human health benefits. These groups of
compounds can act as plant sunscreens,
thus providing protection for the plants
against UVB radiation2.
Because of its greater UVB light level, New Zealand-grown
plants produce compounds that can potentially improve the
overall health of the human diet because these natural bioactive
compounds exhibit potent antioxidant and other functional
properties that promote health.

New Zealand is primary producing country,
which means it has a major economic focus
on food and agricultural production. The
New Zealand Government recognised the
importance of health and nutritional innovation
from food and so, in partnership with industry,
it has funded research programs in bothagriculture and food technology over the past
several decades. While much of this research
has centred on traditional agricultural staples
such as beef, dairy and grain production, there
has been a growing trend toward investigating
and characterising bioactives and their potential
health benefits.

EXAMPLES OF NEW ZEALANDS INNOVATION
The innovation in natural design
and ecology that comes about
from geographic isolation has led
many organisations to examine the
unique biodiversity of New Zealand
with the view of commercialising
new discoveries. The process stillcontinues today, but what has
been commercialised to date
remains just a fraction of the
countrys untapped potential.

The importance of quality standards
cannot be overstated, as this is an
essential element in building trust and
brand loyalty with the retail consumer.
These quality and production standardscreate confidence in the bioactives and
ultimately the products which are sold.
The New Zealand Government has
significant oversight and enforcement
of quality standards relating to food and
agricultural products, which extendsto bioactives. The country maintains
genetically modified organism (GMO)
free status and bovine spongiform
encephalopathy (BSE) disease free
status, as well as a strict enforcement of
antibioticand hormonefree status in
animal products. New Zealand animals
are raised and farmed to very strict
standards of animal health and welfareand the use of hormones and growth
promoters is banned.
The clean soils and waters of
New Zealand also ensure the highest
purity of the raw material source and
that the risk of product contaminationfrom heavy metals and pollutants is
greatly reduced.
New Zealand is world leading in raw
material traceability, which has grown
in importance as the reports of
bioactive adulteration occur fromaround the world.
New Zealand offers many competitive
advantages in the development offunctional foods and ingredients.
These include:
a grass-fed agricultural economy
that results in healthy, high quality
produce and unique raw materials
world-class research anddevelopment in food technology
and applied nutrition
highly developed food technology
and production systems
a diverse range of high-growth
health ingredients and functional
foods companies
proven innovation and success in
food and beverage production
experience in the integration ofbioactives into novel food systems.
QUALITY STANDARDS UNDERPIN PRODUCT INNOVATION
The success of a product takes more than just
a good idea or the application of innovative
research. It also requires reliable supply, in turn
supported by robust manufacturing and quality
control systems. New Zealands reputation for
excellence in food and agricultural production is
driven by strict adherence to quality standards.

NEW ZEALAND BIOACTIVES: GIVES THE CONSUMERS WHAT THEY WANT
Informed consumers
According to internationalmarket research company
Innova Market Insights,
US consumers arecalling for increasing
transparency, credibility
and accountability
from nutraceutical and
food manufacturers.
New Zealand is a world
leader in traceability.
Ingredient and food
manufacturers mustfollow strict and audited
quality and manufacturing
standards as part of the
countrys internationally
recognised foodregulations.
The demand forfree from foods
More and more, USconsumers are wanting
their food to be free-from undesirable additives
and residues. Innova
Market Insights indicates
a growing trend in the use
of free from claims on
food products in the US.
New Zealand places strict
rules on the production of
agricultural products thateither severely restricts
or totally bans the use
of antibiotics, pesticide
residues, or growth
promotants that can becommonly found in foods
from other markets.
Sources of innovation
It has been suggested
that there has been
a recent slowdown in
new product innovationas manufacturers
attempt to deal with EU
deadlines for labellingcompliance. Consumers,
however, continue to
seek innovation in their
food and nutraceutical
products.
The New Zealand food
and nutraceutical industry
has used its industry
research infrastructure to
continue the development
of new plant and fruitcultivars that dont resort
to genetic modification. In
addition to its innovation,
New Zealand is considered
a clean and exotic source
for food production.
Good health for anageing population
Sustaining good health
for an ageing population
is a significant focus fora growing segment of
the US population. This
is driven by a growing
understanding from well-
informed consumers of
the role a healthy diet
can play in extending the
active years. Because of
its geographic location
and grass-fed agriculture,New Zealand offers the
production of whole foods
and ingredients that can
be shown to have higherlevels of nutritionally
bioactive compounds.
The following have been identified as some of the key
market and consumer trends in the US. They represent
some of the common consumer expectations of food
and nutraceutical manufacturers:

NEW ZEALAND BIOACTIVES: GIVES MANUFACTURERS WHAT THEY WANT
Marketing
Manufacturers are looking
for a bioactive thatthrough its marketing
story creates a highdegree of emotional
engagement with the
consumer. New Zealand
has long been regarded
by consumers around the
world to be a lush green
island country, with snow
capped mountains and
golden sandy beaches. It is a clean and green
land, where the essential
goodness is captured in
the food and the products
it produces.
Quality
Manufacturers can have a
high degree of confidence
in the quality standards
and transparency in theauditing, application
and enforcement of
these quality standards.
New Zealand has some of
the most highly regarded
and respected quality
standards for food andbioactives manufacturing
in the world; its food
traceability practices are
world-leading.
Supply chain
Because many of
New Zealand bioactives
are derived from the
countrys existing foodproduction, there is
already a significant
supply chain system
in place for many of
these bioactives. The
advantage of this is that
New Zealand suppliers can
quickly scale up supplyto meet future demand.
In addition, New Zealand
becomes a great off
season supplier for
products that are seasonal
with high demand. USmanufacturers can avoid
the carrying costs of raw
materials throughout the
year until the next annual
production cycle.
Innovation
Innovation in bioactives
combines both efficacy
and safety. The evidence
bar continues to rise forbioactives in nutraceuticals
and foods. Manufacturers
expect both effectiveness
and safety. Since the
New Zealand bioactives
industry tends to focus on
the health benefits derived
from food products,
there is intrinsic safety
in its products.
Sustainable
A bioactive product or
ingredient that is good
for the planet, that is
sustainable and clean,a product that is also
ethical, is desirable. Inaddition to its wonderful
marketing story,
New Zealand maintains
a strong reputation
for its environmental
sustainability and respect
for its ecology.
Bioactive ingredients and products from New Zealand
meet the growing demand of US manufacturers as they,
in turn, seek to meet the needs of their own customers.
The following is a summary of recent trends which take
into consideration what US manufacturers are seeking
from international suppliers:

NEW ZEALAND:ITS UNIQUE NATIVES
Around 80 percent of all higher plants that grow
within New Zealand are endemic and not found
anywhere else in the world. It was New Zealands
early geographic isolation in the southwestern
Pacific Ocean that has resulted in the evolution
of a wealth of unique flora and fauna.
The countrys high mountain ranges act as rain-
makers and have ensured an ample water supply
to support growth and ecological diversity.
In additional to its plants, many of New Zealands
agricultural products are not found anywhere else
in the world.

MANUKA OIL
Manuka essential oil from the East Cape region
in New Zealand contains very high levels of
a specific bioactive compound which has
been clinically shown to be responsible for
manuka oils powerful anti-fungal and anti-
bacterial activity. This antimicrobial activity
makes East Cape manuka oil an ideal natural
treatment for bacterial, fungal, yeast and viralskin infections such as ringworm, acne, candida
albicans, athletes foot, nail fungus, eczema and
seborrheic dermatitis10,11.
HOROPITO NEW ZEALAND RADIATA PINE (PINUS RADIATA)
In a double blind, five-week trial of 42
male subjects aged between 50 and65 years of age, the results showed that
taking New Zealand radiata pine bark
extract was associated with significant
reaction time improvements in cognitive
tests compared to controls. Cognitive
abilities naturally decline with age but
the reaction time improvements seen in
the treatment group were equivalent to
12 years of recovered age-related loss in
brain function.
Traditionally used in Maori medicine,
horopito has been shown by researchers
in the US and New Zealand to be
extremely effective against yeasts such
as candida albicans. Horopito leaves have
a hot peppery taste and have been used
as a seasoning on food similar to black
pepper. The peppery taste is caused by
polygodial, which is considered to be thecompound responsible for the anti-fungal
properties8,9. Horopito also contains the
powerful bioactive antioxidant flavanoids
quercetin and taxifolin.
Horopito extract has shown powerful
antifungal effects for the treatment
and management of recurrent feminine
candidiasis (thrush) after six months of
treatment and then a further six months
of observations of relapse.
New Zealand has a very large forestry
industry which is based on the
sustainable production of radiata pine.
Introduced from California in the 1850s,
radiata pine (called Monterey Pine in
California) represents nearly 90 percent
of New Zealands timber industry. This
is largely because it grows faster in
New Zealand than almost anywhereelse in the world. A by-product fromthe timber industry has been the
development of bioactive compounds
from the bark of radiata pine. The
extraction and production of these
bioactive compounds was developed
using only pure water as the solvent,
keeping sustainability in mind.
The radiata pine bark extract has
been the subject of several clinical
investigations over the past decade with
the focus on cardiovascular health and,
most recently, brain health including
improvements in cognitive function13,14.
It appears that improvement in
microcirculation may represent the
underlying mechanism of action.New Zealand radiata pine bark extract
has been demonstrated to support
healthy brain function, and may support
improved cognitive performance in
older individuals.

NEW ZEALAND IS UNIQUE IN THE WORLD FOR DEVELOPING
NOVEL BIOACTIVES FROM MARINE AND AQUATIC SOURCES
There are a number of marine and aquatic species (including fish,
shellfish, crustacea, algae and seaweed) only found in and around the
coastal waters of New Zealand that contain novel bioactives. Some
examples include functional lipids and complex carbohydrate with
anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties from green-lipped
mussels, which are only found around the coastline of New Zealand.
Recent advances in sustainable farming and
processing technology have allowed the capture and
concentration of some of these bioactive compounds
on a commercial scale. An example is the developmentof novel anti-inflammatory lipids known as bioactive
lipid amides (BLA) along with bioactive peptides
and carbohydrate. While BLAs have been the focus
of much international research, harnessing their
beneficial properties from natural sources has been
a significant technical challenge until recently15.

Pain Reduction From Green Shell Mussel Extractfor Patients with Arthrosis of the Knee
GREEN-LIPPED MUSSEL
A study conducted in the United States (2000)
on New Zealand green-lipped mussel extract17
120 patients with arthrosis of the knee (where the
knee cartilage deteriorates and the bones start
rubbing directly against each other) were assessed
for reduction of pain. Both patients and physician
independently recorded and assessed improvementsin pain and mobility.
New Zealands marine-farmed green-lipped
mussel follows industry best practice guidelines and
the New Zealand Environmental Code of Practice
for the supply of safe, sustainable and healthy
seafood products.
In fact, New Zealand marine farmers safe, sustainable
and environmentally friendly practices have beenrecognised by the international conservation
organisation Blue Ocean Institute who rank
New Zealand green-lipped mussels as one of
the top two eco-friendly seafoods in the world.
This extract is included in a number of
dietary supplements sold worldwide for
animal and human use. Green-lippedmussels are rich in proteins, amino acids,
minerals, mucopolysaccharides and
omega-3 fatty acids and are used for
their gastro-protective and even free-
radical-scavenging properties16.
After over 30 years of research and
clinical experience, green-lipped mussel
extract is recognised as one of the mosteffective natural anti-inflammatory and
joint mobility supplements available.
The effectiveness of green-lipped
mussel extract is the result of a unique
combination of several naturally
occurring bioactives including functional
lipids and complex carbohydrate. These
work together to inhibit the formation of
pro-inflammatory compounds, thereby
helping to reduce inflammation andproviding a degree of pain relief.
There is a growing body of evidence to
indicate that controlling the production
of inflammatory mediators in the
body may help improve conditions
such as arthritis, asthma, psoriasis and
inflammatory bowel disease (includingulcerative colitis and Crohns disease).
Because all of these involve elements
of inflammation, green-lipped mussel
extract is thought to have further
benefits here.
Green-lipped mussel extract is a natural health
product extracted from New Zealands indigenous
greenshell mussels (Perna canaliculus), which
are grown on coastal marine farms in pollution
free waters.

BOYSENBERRY (WHOLE FRUIT) BING SWEET CHERRY
The Bing sweet cherry has always
been a popular stone fruit with many
of New Zealands close export markets.
In an attempt to better understand the
nutritional benefits of the fruit and to
add value to non-export grade fruit, a
study was undertaken during the 2008-
2009 harvest season by sweet cherry
growers from the Central Otago regionof New Zealand.
The investigation included an analytical
assessment of total phenolics (key
nutrients associated with human health)
and anthocyanin (powerful antioxidants)
levels in the cherry to benchmark the
New Zealand fruit against fruit grown
in other regions of the world. Theseanalytical results were then compared
to the results of similar studies from the
same varieties of sweet cherry grown in
California and Oregon which had been
tested by the University of California,
Davis, a public teaching and researchuniversity. It was discovered that the
New Zealand-grown Bing sweet cherry
had fruit that was significantly higher
in both key bioactives total phenolics
and anthocyanin levels.
Recent research into the health benefits
of the boysenberry has revealed more to
this berry than simply its taste.
It has been known for over a decade
that New Zealand-grown boysenberries
have very high levels of antioxidants and
anthocyanins (red colour pigments). But
more recently the research has focused
on two other bioactive components of
the boysenberry called ellargic acid andellagitannins, which have been identified
as powerful anti-inflammatory agents.
While it is still too early to know these
results, the New Zealand Governmenthas been funding ongoing research
into the potential benefits for the
management of inflammatory bowel
conditions such as Crohns disease.
This appears to be a promising area for
future research19.
New Zealand is the worlds number one producer
of boysenberries, a berry that results from a
natural hybridisation of a raspberry, blackberry and
loganberry. New Zealands world-leading supply
position offers an exclusive position for companies
that are first to market with this excellent tasting fruit. On average the total phenolic
compounds of the New Zealand fruitwas shown to be 60 percent higher
than the same variety grown in the US.
The antioxidant value of the
New Zealand fruit was nearly 300percent higher when compared to
the values found in the fruit from
the same US-grown cultivar.
New Zealand sweet cherries were
tested for levels of anthocyanins
and found to have 238 percenthigher levels than the Western US
sweet cherries.
Antioxidant capacity is normallymeasured in Trolox units per 100 gm or
TE/100g, with the US cherry measured
at 2111 and the New Zealand cherrymeasured at 6122.

GOLD KIWIFRUIT (WHOLE FRUIT AND EXTRACTS)
Gold kiwifruit is a relatively new fruit to the global
market. It is similar to its green kiwifruit cousin but
with a novel flavour that has become very popular
with consumers the world over. Gold kiwifruit has
been the subject of many advanced studies into its
health benefits and much of this research has focused
on the benefits to the human immune system.
A recent study published in the prestigious BritishJournal of Nutrition (2012) reported that whole gold
kiwifruit contains nutrients which are important for
immune function during symptoms of upper airway
infection (i.e. the common cold), including vitamins
C and E, folate, polyphenols and carotenoids. Theresearchers reported that consumption of gold kiwifruit
resulted in the detection of increased concentrations
of several bioactives that contribute to reduced
duration and severity of cold symptoms20.
Also known as theActinidia arguta, the kiwiberry
is also a cousin of the green kiwifruit. Sometimes
called baby kiwifruit, this is a smaller, hairless
version of the traditional kiwifruit. Looking
just like a large berry and about the same
size, arguta has been the subject of extensive
bioactives research. To date, much of the study
has focused on the argutas ability to suppress
the symptoms of dermatitis in skin. Like thegold kiwifruit, it is assumed that arguta is acting
on the human immune system to dampen theoveractive inflammatory response in hyper-
sensitive individuals21.

As an edible fruit, the feijoa is green,
about the size of a kiwifruit and with
an exotic, refreshing and intense flavour.
New Zealand is one of the only
countries in the world that grows this
exciting fruit on a commercial scale.Since 2007 there have been numerous
studies into the health benefits of
the feijoa by researchers around theworld. The research has ranged from
examining the effect of increasing
bone mineralisation to protect against
osteoporosis through to the fruits
beneficial effect on gut bacteria22.

This is similar to a study in the 1990s
that determined that green tea grown
in the very high UV light conditions
that exist in New Zealand producedexcess levels of oligomeric procyanidin
(OPC) polyphenolic compounds. These
compounds are powerful antioxidants
and are responsible for the generally
recognised health benefits of
green tea.
This is likely the same mechanism
for the very high antioxidant activity
found in the Sauvignon Blanc grape
seed extracts.An independent study using
New Zealand grape seed extract inskincare demonstrated that it was able
to improve skin cell membrane integrity
by both decreasing trans-epidermal
water loss (TEWL) and improving
elasticity each by at least 16 percent.
Reducing TEWL and maintaining
hydration of the skin is a major
objective of the skincare industry.
INNOVATION AS A BY-PRODUCT OF THE NEW ZEALAND WINE INDUSTRY
New Zealand is highly regarded for the quality of its wine industry,
which has also helped fuel innovation in the natural products
industry. Studies have been done to determine the antioxidant
potency of some grape seeds, honing in on the Sauvignon Blanc
grape variety.

Despite its remote location in the Pacific Ocean,
New Zealands climate and farming methods provide
a low environmental footprint. New Zealands
agricultural production and the requirements of
grassland or grass-fed farming require relatively
low energy, including transport to market.
For example, New Zealand dairy products came
out with lower emissions per ton of milk solids when
compared to the grain-feed farming used in the UK.

BIOACTIVES FROM DAIRY BENEFIT FROM GRASS-FED CATTLE
There has been a wide range of innovative dairy-derived bioactives
developed by the New Zealand dairy industry. These include
colostrum, lactoferrin and lactoperoxidase, immune defence
proteins, conjugated linoleic acid, probiotics, vitamin K
enriched milk and many others.
A major advantage of New Zealands
year-round, grass-fed dairy cattle is that
many of the bioactives, which these
animals naturally produce in their milkappear to be elevated when compared to
other grain-fed dairy cattle. In particular
this appears to be true of immune
defence proteins that are designed to
confer a strengthened immune response
for a calf once the colostrum (or first
milk) is finished.
The benefits of grass-fed beef and dairy:
80 percent less total fat
30 percent less cholesterol
up to 4 times more vitamin E
up to 10 times more vitamin A
higher levels of conjugatedlinolenic acid
significantly higher levels of
antioxidants such as glutathione,
superoxide dismutase (SOD) and
catalase (CAT).

NEW ZEALAND:RESEARCH ANDDEVELOPMENT
FOR INNOVATION
The way in which the New Zealand Government
funds its applied health and nutrition research
is designed to support the core agriculture,
horticulture and marine industries. It also
encourages innovation and fresh thinking throughcollaboration among New Zealands universities
and the Governments own research institutes.
A great example of this process in action can be found
in Palmerston North at a research campus called the
Fitzherbert Science Centre. This research campus
includes Massey University (the second largest in
New Zealand), a number of different Crown Research
Institutes (Government-owned research facilities), as
well as a major private dairy research facility, owned
by Fonterra (a large global dairy company). Thesefood science and nutrition research and development
capabilities are also closely linked to high performance
sports physiology, medicine and veterinary science.

BLIS Technologies is a New Zealand biotechnology company andaward-winning producer of probiotic health products designedto effectively combat harmful bacteria. Founded to provide a wayto reduce the usage of antibiotics through taking a preventativeapproach, the company aims to promote good health throughthe use of natural and safe advanced oral care probiotics.
BLIS Technologies was founded in 2000following more than 30 years of researchby Professor John Tagg of the MicrobiologyDepartment at the University of Otago. Hehas devoted his life as a microbiologist todiscovering natural preventative methods tostop streptococcal infections in children.
This led him to discover strains of thenaturally occurring tongue bacteriumStreptococcus salivarius. He identifiedthat only 2 percent of strains producedantimicrobial substances (known as
Bacteriocin-Like Inhibitory Substancesor BLIS) that most effectively inhibited thegrowth of the bacterial causative agent ofstrep throat Streptococcus pyogenes. StrainK12 was the prototype strain selected forcommercialisation as an oral probiotic.
In 2001 BLIS Technologies was listed on the
New Zealand Stock Exchange. In the timesince, the company has developed consumerproducts for throat health, halitosis (badbreath), probiotic support for the body, and immune support.

MANUKAGUARD
ManukaGuard imports premium quality manuka honey into
North America, and manufactures and distributes manuka honeyproducts. The companys vision is to reduce pain and sufferingon the planet.
ManukaGuard was founded by Gavin Gear
who, when diagnosed with gastrointestinal
reflux disease (GERD) in his early twenties,
struggled for years with prescription and
over-the-counter products for relief from
chronic heartburn and acid reflux. He knew
there had to be another solution and, in
particular, an all natural one.
Together with his childhood friend, Brett
Edmonds, the owner of a successful
New Zealand manufacturer and distributor
of dietary supplements, Gavin founded
the company Ndal (pronounced end-all)
Laboraties, trading as ManukaGuard. The
two men knew of the medicinal benefits of
medical grade honey and, in particular, the
additional benefits of a native ingredient the
indigenous Maori people of New Zealand
have used for centuries. Through research,
testing, trial and reformulation a solution to
the GERD discomfort that Gavin and others
suffered with was found.
