Biodiesel Application

for

Ground Services Equipment

at

HK International Airport

By : Kenneth Chan Executive Director Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited

27 March 2015

Started operation in Kai Tak Airport in 1976, growing hand-in-hand with Hong Kong

Relocated our headquarters to Hong Kong International Airport in Chek Lap Kok in 1998

Serves 90 international airlines and 1000 freight forwarders

Handles more than 40% of Hong Kong International Airport’s cargo tonnage throughput

SuperTerminal 1 is the world’s single largest air cargo terminal

Investment : US$1 billion

Potential handling capacity : 3.5 million metric tonnes p.a.

Vertical design to optimise the use of space

Extensive use of industrial automation and I.T. systems to ensure maximum handling efficiency

Biodiesel (driver)

• Hactl is committed to developing the sustainable business without

compromising the need of future generation

• ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 accreditation

• pledged to make HKIA the World’s Greenest Airport

• to reduce airport-wide carbon emissions by 25% per workload unit (100

kg of aircargo) by 2015 based on 2008 level.

Biodiesel (what)

Biodiesel

• fuel comprised of mono-alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived

from vegetable oils or animal fats, designated B100, and meeting the

requirements of ASTM D 6751.

Biodiesel Blend

• blend of biodiesel fuel meeting ASTM D 6751 with petroleum-based

diesel fuel, designated BXX, where XX represents the volume

percentage of biodiesel fuel in the blend.

European Standard - EN14214

Alcohol

Vegetable Oils /

Animal Fats

Biodiesel (why)

• Non-toxic

• Biodegradeable

• Greenhouse gases and air

pollutants reduced

• Use in boiler and internal

combustion engine without

major adjustment

• Minor drop in performance

• Zero sulphates emission

• Small net contribution of

CO2
