Biodiversity Statistics of Korea 2013 iii
As inhabitants of this earth, we obtain a plethora of benefits from biodiversity, and its functions
have enabled great human development. However, a drastic decrease in biodiversity has
sparked great concern around the world. In response, the United Nations adopted the Convention on
Biological Diversity in 1992 to preserve biodiversity and encourage its sustainable use, which many
nations have now also adopted.
South Korea has also shown great concern about both the global environmental and domestic biodiversity issues, and
therefore has enacted the Act on the Conservation and Use of Biodiversity in 2012. For its implementation, the Korean
government established the National Biodiversity Center under National Institute of Biological Resources (NIBR) of
Ministry of Environment. The National Biodiversity Center is responsible for various domestic and foreign affairs, including
the management of information on national biodiversity and making a preemptive move towards the Nagoya Protocol.
In order for us to fully conserve and take advantage of biodiversity, the first priority is to accurately understand its present
conditions. Accordingly, the National Biodiversity Center has published Biodiversity Statistics of Korea 2013 by gathering
information on Korean biodiversity through ongoing research activities and relevant tasks.
This booklet will help people more easily understand the current status of biodiversity in Korea. The information here will
not only serve as useful base data for the formulation of national policy, but will also be widely utilized for conducting further
studies on biodiversity and contribute greatly to the application field of biological resources. I would like to express my
deepest gratitude to each and every individual who has made this publication possible.
