“Best-In-Class Technologies”
This Presentation provides you with additional Insight and Background Information regarding Biogas CHP Cogeneration Technologies. Significant Advancements have been made during the past 20 Years.
Europe started to actively implement Anaerobic Digestion, Biogas Plants, and CHP Cogeneration Technologies in the early 90’s,… 20 Years ago. At that Time there were approximately 200 Biogas Plant Facilities installed in Central Europe, mainly in Germany. That’s roughly the same Number of Agricultural and Dairy Farm Digesters operational in the United States today.
In the meantime Europe installed more than 16,000 Anaerobic Digesters and Biogas CHP Plants. 60% are located in Germany. It is expected that by 2015 more than 30,000 Biogas Plants will be operational all over Europe.
Introduction Introduction
Here in the U.S., many Anaerobic Digester Designers, Engineering Companies, Project Developers, and Builders made great Progress in advancing their Biogas Production Technologies. While those Improvements and Advancements are ongoing, it appears that not very much has changed in Reference to Product Development in the Biogas CHP Cogeneration Sector.
By analyzing Product Offerings of mainly domestic Companies active in the Biogas CHP Market, and carefully looking at most Installations completed during the past few Years, it becomes evident that the Biogas CHP Technology applied in the U.S. for most Anaerobic Digester Projects is very similar to what happened in Europe approximately 20 Years ago. Especially in the System Range of 100 ekW up to 1,000 ekW.
Potential Customers and many Biogas Project Developers are frequently Potential Customers and many Biogas Project Developers are frequently asking what makes European Biogas CHP Cogeneration Technologies asking what makes European Biogas CHP Cogeneration Technologies different, and why those Products are so much more advanced, and what different, and why those Products are so much more advanced, and what Benefits as well as added Values can be expected.Benefits as well as added Values can be expected.

Introduction Introduction
By looking at most Biogas Plants installed and commissioned in the U.S. during the past few Years, we noticed that the CHP Technology applied ranges from imported and modern Systems to ancient and antiquated Technologies. One Company specializes to offer used reconditioned Gas Engines (Gensets), designed in the 60’s and actually manufactured in the 70’s. Because such 40 Year old Gensets are very cheap, many Operators decided to use such inefficient and outdated Technologies, not realizing how much Money they are losing and how negative this impacts their Bottom Line.

Typical Problems experienced in the U.S. with standardTypical Problems experienced in the U.S. with standardGas Gensets that are in Reality not built for BiogasGas Gensets that are in Reality not built for Biogas
Most gas engine manufacturers are specifying H2H and siloxane levels in fuel gases fed to their engines. Despite having gas treatment systems installed, moderate damage has also been experienced at low concentrations of those chemical compounds. As deposits accumulate, the engines efficiency is significantly reduced. Unburned fuel contaminates the exhaust gas increasing emissions. Many engine suppliers "de-rate” their gas engines in biogas configuration to reduce output and to prevent significant engine damage.
Service & maintenance cost are high, and very often severe damage occurs to valves, pistons, piston rings, liners, cylinder heads, spark plugs and turbochargers, necessitating premature servicing, costly repairs, and frequent major overhauls.
Traditionally in the U.S., gas generators that run on biogas are adapted internal combustion engines not specifically designed for biogas. Microturbines have less moving parts, but have shown serious problems if the gas is not prepared by using excessive, comprehensive and expensive gas purification systems, over and above what internal combustion engines would require. Generally the elevated cost outweighs the advantages of micro turbines. Also, turbines have extreme low efficiencies. In biogas configuration they hardly reach more than around 24%.
