BIOL 1005 – Concepts in Biology Fall 2019 Concepts in Biology is a general-education, natural sciences course. It is an introduction to the life sciences, focusing on the structure and function of organisms and their relationship to the environment. Specifically, in this class we’ll talk about the qualities that unify living things (chemistry, cell structure, metabolism), the qualities that make them different (genetics), the history of, and variation in, life (evolution, diversity), and what living things do with their time (ecology). Unless you HAVE to buy from the bookstore, it’s cheapest to buy directly from McGraw-Hill. • Laboratory Manual: The lab manual is sold only as a coursepack via the bookstore. Order it at the bookstore’s website and then pick it up at the Crimson & Cream copy shop on the first floor of Oklahoma Memorial Union (~$18). The copy shop is open on weekdays only, so plan ahead. Note that you may not use a lab manual from a previous semester. • i>Clicker 2: ($50 or less, depending on new/used): You’ll need this for most lectures and most labs.
