Note faint reddish suffusion in the face and throat; the extent is highly variable but it is almost always present.

No other species has completely yellow head.

Compare to House Finch: back suffused with rosy color, and underparts without streaks.

The only blackbird that is actually all black.

Compare to Savannah: much redder, more broadly streaked; broad gray superciliary.

N. Cardinal has black face.

Indigo Bunting female (Cardinalidae)

Only seed-crusher with nearly unmarked head and back.

Swamp Sparrow (Emberizidae)

Note reddish brown upperwing coverts.

Chipping Sparrow has dark lores and is not as gray below

Brown-headed Cowbird (Icteridae)

There really isn’t any other species that has this shade of dark brownish gray.

Note the seed-crusher bill.

Swainson’s Warbler (Parulidae)

Broad pale superciliary, all brown above, pale below

Tennessee Warbler (Parulidae)

Compare to Orange-crowned Warbler and Swainson’s Warbler

White-throated Sparrow (Emberizidae)

Note yellow in superciliary, clean for white throat.

Common Grackle (Icteridae)

Note contrast between breast, back, and upperwing coverts … compare to Boat-tailed.

Yellow-breasted Chat (Icteriidae)

Compare to Common Yellowthroat, Kentucky Warbler, Pine Warbler, Blue-winged Warbler, and Orchard Oriole female.

Yellow-rumped Warbler (Parulidae)

Only Magnolia Warbler also has a yellow rump.
