11The European Life Sciences Summit 2012

Word from Mr. Mestrez, Deputy Province of Liège

Biomedica – A Brainchild of EuregioVarious Interreg projects from the Euregio Meuse-Rhine, like “Life Science” or “In Europa”, brought Life Science key players in the Euregio together and formed the basis for successful cooperation.

By joining forces, tools and know-how and by integrating the potential of Leuven and Eindhoven, they created the “Top Technology Region” which has become a Life Science forefront in Europe and worldwide. Biomedica results from a fusion of several similar events in this region. Each year, it receives a financial support from the Euregio partner regions.

So, we are proud to welcome the Event in Liège again, in 2012.

It is an undeniable fact that our active companies in the domain of Biotechnology, mostly of University of Liège’s spin-offs, are augur well for the future development of the region.

Let us give some examples of their important implication in the regional business structure:

Jean-Pierre Delwart, the head of Eurogentec, was Chairman of the Walloon Business Union “Union Wallonne des Entreprises” for 3 years, and François Fornieri, Founder and administrator of Mithra Pharmaceuticals, a University of Liège spin off, has just won the title of Belgian Manager of the Year. Beside these flagships, there are so many other innovative and creative biotechnical companies.

Let’s mention the “GIGA”, an interdisciplinary cluster for applied genoproteomics, whose concept has stirred up the international interest. It is a major pole of research and development for activities in the biotech area, promoting communication and interaction among various departments and faculties, as well as enhancing and relying on a close collaboration between research and business. Only a few similar centers in Europe have come so far in incorporating academic research, collaborations with companies and technology transfer centers.

It’s impossible to ignore the “Liège Science Park”, under the responsibility of the Company-University Interface of the ULg, which is one of the partner organizers of Biomedica 2012. Several innovative companies are located in this business park, most of those spin-offs from ULg, have a close link to university research.

Liège is very proud of its assets, and would like to welcome all participants. We invite them to participate and enjoy the city life, feel its quality of life and sense of hospitality. We hope they will return for the upcoming major events, like the Start of the Tour de France in June 2012, the Euroskills in October 2012 and, especially the International Exhibition in 2017.

Have a nice stay and a good conference.

Julien MestrezDeputy, Province of Liège
