Biomimetics
Biomimetics (or Bionics) taps nature’s huge reservoir of structures, pro-cess optimizations and functional solutions in order to find technical appli-cations of natural principles. The optimization of resource- and energy effi-ciency that took place in the evolution of all biological systems is of special interest. It offers a great potential for more sustainability in the economy. An essential part of the innovative power of biomimetics is founded on the interaction between basic research in biology on the one hand and the rising technical capabilities of nanotechnology, micro systems technology, optoelectronics, material sciences and processing technologies on the other hand. Mostly it is a long way from the biologically inspired idea to a marketable product. One decisive step on this way is the creation of convincing technical prototypes and demo products derived from nature’s energy- and resource efficient examples.

Organizers
Itke - The Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (itke) at the University of Stuttgart has several years of experience in the development of fibre reinforced structures. In the course of broadening the application of textile materials in building and construction, a biomimetic research group was formed. Here nature is used as a great source of inspiration for the development of elastic fibrous structures, adaptive textile shading systems, biocomposites and even living structures.www.itke.uni-stuttgart.de
PBG - The Plant Biomechanics Group Freiburg (PBG) covers the whole val-ue chain from biological basic research to the development of biomimetic products on a lab bench scale. The focus is on lightweight constructions and attachment structures as well as gradient materials, fibrous compos-ites and smart materials. The main focus of the biomimetic research and development is the quantitative analysis of the relationship of form, struc-ture and function in plants and the transfer of principles into innovative technical products. The (PBG) is integrated in the Botanic Garden Freiburg and has access to a large diversity of plants as an almost bottomless reservoir of biological models.www.botanischer-garten.uni-freiburg.de
BIONA - The »Bionics Innovation for Sustainable Products and Technolo-gies« program of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, puts the high tech strategy (HTS) of the federal government in concrete terms. (HTS) is an initiative for future oriented innovation policy across all gov-ernmental departments. In the years to come about 30 million Euro from the BIONA program will be available for the development of sustainable technologies and products through biomimetics R&D projects, which are based on a collaboration of science and industry. Special attention is given to the involvement and promotion of young researchers.www.bionische-innovationen.de
BIOKON international - The Biomimetics Association BIOKON interna-tional is a coalition of scientists and institutions who positively promote and support the advancement of biomimetics, bionics or bio-inspired technologies. One central aim of the association is to increase the impact of existing international cooperations of scientists working in the field of biomimetics. By sharing their knowledge biomimetic products and tech-nologies as drivers of innovation are promoted.www.biokon-international.net
Competence Network Biomimetics - The Ministry for Science, Re-search and the Art of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg is invest-ing in this future-oriented technology through sponsorship of projects and structures. At least in part for this reason, here in the „State of the inven-tors and thinkers“ one finds the greatest concentration of biomimetics competencies in the whole country. www.kompetenznetz-biomimetik.de
