possible by the X-Box 100 series, is a new concept in the design of systems for megabase DNA resolution. The shape of the box is the key. Alternating electric fields are constrained to be uniform by the geometry 01 the box. Switching thedirection of the field then causes DNA molecules to follow a zig-zag path, resulting in straight lanes. Since migration is dependent upon the shape, and not external circuitry, there are no restrio tions on gel thickness, buffer conductivity, and voltage. The X-Box is available to hold either 13 X 13 cm gels or 20 X 20 cm gels.
