The Palm Beach County Natural Areas System is currently comprised of 30 environmentally sensitive landstotaling more than 27,000 acres that are owned or leased by the County and managed as natural areas by theCounty's Department of Environmental Resources Management (ERM).
These natural areas were acquired to preserve the rare and diverse natural ecosystems present on the sites along with the endangered,threatened, and rare species of plants and animals that inhabit them. The natural areas are available to the public for resource-basedrecreation, environmental education, scientific research, passive recreation such as nature walks, bird watching and photography. Sevenof these natural areas have public use facilities such as a parkingarea, an accessible nature trail, informational kiosks, and hikingtrails. Several have portable toilets. The following list includes thenine natural areas managed by ERM having public use facilities andone preserve managed by the City of Delray Beach.
• North County •
1. Jupiter Ridge Natural Area -1800 South U.S. Highway 1, Jupiter. A 271-acre site with one ofthe best remaining examples of Florida scrub in Palm BeachCounty. This site also contains depression marsh, tidal swamp,and several flatwoods communities.
2. Juno Dunes Natural Area -14200 U.S. Highway 1, Juno Beach. This 576-acre site containsFlorida scrub, beach/dunes, coastal strand, a maritime ham-mock and freshwater wetland communities. It extends acrossthe primary coastal ridge from the Atlantic Ocean to theIntracoastal Waterway. The oceanfront parcel is adjacent toLoggerhead Park, which contains active recreational facilitiesand the Marinelife Center of Juno Beach.The entrance to thewest tract is located on the west side of U.S. Highway #1, 1/2mile north of Donald Ross Road.
3. Frenchman's Forest Natural Area - 12201 Prosperity Farms Road, Palm Beach Gardens. This158-acre site contains large areas of pine flatwoods, strandswamp, scrubby flatwoods, hydric hammock, tidal swamp andwet flatwoods communities. Public use facilities include aparking area, an accessible nature trail with an observationplatform, a boardwalk, informational kiosk and hiking trails.
4. Sweetbay Natural Area - 12560 Aviation Boulevard, Palm Beach Gardens. This 1,094-acre site is a mosaic of wetlands, pine flatwoods and oak ham-mocks. The wetlands attract many wading birds. Other ani-mals observed include red-shouldered hawks, bobcats, east-ern lubber grasshoppers, and Florida box turtles. Theentrance is located inside the North County Airport off theBee Line Highway, one mile north of PGA Boulevard. Publicuse facilities include a parking area, a bicycle rack, an accessi-ble nature trail with boardwalk and observation platform, andan informational kiosk.
• Central County •5. Royal Palm Beach Pines Natural Area -
110 Nature's Way, Royal Palm Beach. Visitors may also enterthe northern entrance at 40th Street and Avocado Blvd. This773-acre site is a mosaic of pine flatwoods and wet prairie.Public use facilities include parking areas, interpretive kiosks,an accessible nature trail with a boardwalk and observationplatform, hiking trails, equestrian trail, an equestrian bridgeand portable toilets.
• South County •6. Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area -
Hypoluxo Road and US 1,Hypoluxo.This 97-acre natural areaprotects scrub and scrubby flatwood habitats. Public use facil-ities include a parking lot, observation towers, and informa-tional kiosk, hiking trails and an accessible nature trail.
7. Rosemary Scrub Natural Area - 2901 Seacrest Blvd, Boynton Beach. This 14-acre site con-tains Florida scrub and mesic hammock communities. Publicuse facilities include a parking area, an accessible nature trails,an informational kiosk and a hiking trail.
8. Seacrest Scrub Natural Area - 3400 Seacrest Blvd, Boynton Beach. This 54-acre site con-tains Florida scrub and scrubby pine flatwoods communities.Public use facilities include a parking area, an accessible naturetrail, a hiking trail and an informational kiosk.
9. Delray Oaks Natural Area - 2021 S.W. 29th Street, Delray Beach. This 25-acre site con-tains prairie and xeric hammock communities along with asmall strand swamp and areas of flatwoods.The tree canopyincludes live oaks and sabal palms with an understory of wildcoffee, beautyberry and saw palmetto. The area has publicuse facilities including parking area, an accessible nature trailwith an observation platform, an informational kiosk and ahiking trail.
10. Leon M. Weekes Environmental Preserve-2900 Albatross Road, Delray Beach, Managed by City ofDelray Beach Department of Parks and Recreation.This 12-acre site contains Florida Scrub and is open seven days aweek, dawn to dusk. It can be seen in one half hour and ishandicapped accessible.A brochure is available. It features anature trail and gazebo.A children’s play area is adjacent. For

Public use facilities include aparking area, an accessible nature trail with an observationplatform, a boardwalk, informational kiosk and hiking trails.
4. Sweetbay Natural Area - 12560 Aviation Boulevard, Palm Beach Gardens. This 1,094-acre site is a mosaic of wetlands, pine flatwoods and oak ham-mocks. The wetlands attract many wading birds. Other ani-mals observed include red-shouldered hawks, bobcats, east-ern lubber grasshoppers, and Florida box turtles. Theentrance is located inside the North County Airport off theBee Line Highway, one mile north of PGA Boulevard. Publicuse facilities include a parking area, a bicycle rack, an accessi-ble nature trail with boardwalk and observation platform, andan informational kiosk.
• Central County •5. Royal Palm Beach Pines Natural Area -
110 Nature's Way, Royal Palm Beach. Visitors may also enterthe northern entrance at 40th Street and Avocado Blvd. This773-acre site is a mosaic of pine flatwoods and wet prairie.Public use facilities include parking areas, interpretive kiosks,an accessible nature trail with a boardwalk and observationplatform, hiking trails, equestrian trail, an equestrian bridgeand portable toilets.
• South County •6. Hypoluxo Scrub Natural Area -
Hypoluxo Road and US 1,Hypoluxo.This 97-acre natural areaprotects scrub and scrubby flatwood habitats. Public use facil-ities include a parking lot, observation towers, and informa-tional kiosk, hiking trails and an accessible nature trail.
7. Rosemary Scrub Natural Area - 2901 Seacrest Blvd, Boynton Beach. This 14-acre site con-tains Florida scrub and mesic hammock communities. Publicuse facilities include a parking area, an accessible nature trails,an informational kiosk and a hiking trail.
8. Seacrest Scrub Natural Area - 3400 Seacrest Blvd, Boynton Beach. This 54-acre site con-tains Florida scrub and scrubby pine flatwoods communities.Public use facilities include a parking area, an accessible naturetrail, a hiking trail and an informational kiosk.
9. Delray Oaks Natural Area - 2021 S.W. 29th Street, Delray Beach. This 25-acre site con-tains prairie and xeric hammock communities along with asmall strand swamp and areas of flatwoods.The tree canopyincludes live oaks and sabal palms with an understory of wildcoffee, beautyberry and saw palmetto. The area has publicuse facilities including parking area, an accessible nature trailwith an observation platform, an informational kiosk and ahiking trail.
10. Leon M. Weekes Environmental Preserve-2900 Albatross Road, Delray Beach, Managed by City ofDelray Beach Department of Parks and Recreation.This 12-acre site contains Florida Scrub and is open seven days aweek, dawn to dusk. It can be seen in one half hour and ishandicapped accessible.A brochure is available. It features anature trail and gazebo.A children’s play area is adjacent. For
