On a complaint by a white passenger,M. K. Gandhi, Barrister-at-Law wasthrown out of the first class railwaycompartment at Maritzburg in SouthAfrica. This incident changed thecourse of his life.

THE EPIC MARCH, 1913
Hundreds of Indians marched fromNew Castle to Transvaal as a protestagainst £3 tax. Their leader Gandhiwas arrested three times in fourdays but they continued the march.

CLOTH, 1921
Gandhi inaugurated the campaignfor the boycott of foreign clothby kindling an immense bonfire inBombay for economic emancipationof India.

THE GREAT TRIAL, 1922
Gandhi was tried for sedition,in March. Pleading guilty hesaid, “I hold it to be a virtue tobe disaffected towards agovernment which has done moreharm to India that any previoussystem”. He was sentenced to sixyears’ imprisonment.

The inhuman destruction of village-industries was corroding Gandhi’sheart. He believed that theirrestoration alone would feed thehungry millions.

THE DANDI MARCH, 1930
On March 12, sixty one year oldGandhi started the great march ofliberty from Sabarmati Ashramwith a strong resolve to break theinhuman salt-law.

THE SALT SATYAGRAHA,
1930
On April 6, Gandhi broke thenefarious Salt-law at Dandi.Despite brutal assaults on thepeople, the war against the salt-tax spread to far flung regions.India was seething in revolt. Gandhiwas arrested on May 4.

FAST FOR THE ERADICATION
OF UNTOUCHABILITY, 1932
Gandhi was arrested on his returnfrom England. On September 20, hecommenced his fast unto death inthe prison for eradicatinguntouchability. On the leaderssigning a pact, the fast was brokenafter six days.

Gandhi pleaded for the uplift ofthe downtrodden untouchablesand for restoring equality betweenman and man.

On the A.I.C.C. passing the ‘QuitIndia’ Resolution on August 8, toend the British rule, Gandhi gavea dictum for the non-violentsoldier of freedom, ‘Do or Die’.On Gandhi’s detention, India’snational pride rose in revolt.

PILGRIM OF PEACE, 1946-47
Gandhi set out on his pilgrimageof peace in riot-wrecked Bengalto establish unity between the twosister-communities. His messagewas, “The cry of blood for bloodis barbarous.”

HARMONY, 1947
On September 1, Gandhi beganhis fast to end communal frenzysearching in all concerned. Thehooligans surrendered theirweapons. Gandhi broke his faston the restoration of peace.

MARTYRDOM, 1948
On January 30 at the sun-set-hour, theperverse assassin of the ages lodgedhot lead in the soft flesh of MohandasKaramchand Gandhi. His mind wasconcentrated on God and he mergedin Him. He had said, “If I am to dieby the bullet of a mad man I must doso smilling”. He was the VictoriousOne in death as in Life.

On January 31, Gandhi’s bodywas laid on a sandal wood pyreat Rajghat, Delhi. From the pyrecomes the message : Lead me fromthe Unreal to the Real. FromDarkness to Light, From Death toimmortality.
