He entered the service in November, 1854, and became surgeon in June, 1867. He served with the 8th Regiment at the siege and capture of Delhi in 1857 accompanied Greathed’smovable column in medical charge of the regiment ; and was present in the action of Bolu.ndshuhur, affair of Allyghur, battle of Agra, action of Dilkoosha, and relief of Lucknow under Lord Clyde, the affair of the 2nd, and action of Dec. 6th at Ca-wni ,)ore, and action of Khudagunj (medal and clasps).- United, Service Gazette. ODONTOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF GREAT BRITAIN.- On Monday, the 6th instant, at a meeting of this Society, H. J. Barrett, Esq., in the chair, Mr. J. R. Mummery, L.D.S., F.L.S., read the second and concluding portion of his paper 11 On the Relations which Dental Caries, as discovered amongst the ancient inhabitants of Britain, and amongst Aboriginal Races, may be supposed to hold to their Food and Social Condition." A DONATION of l 000 has been received from " H. G." by the East London Hospital for Children at Ratcliff-cross. WE regret to learn that as Dr. R. R. Preston, of South Brent, was engaged in snipe shooting near that vil- lage, with Captain Kelly, the Rev. W. S. Cole, and Mr. H. Cole, solicitor, the last-named fired at a snipe, and unhappily shot Dr. Preston, who was in an adjoining meadow concealed from view. Some of the shots lodged in one of the unfor- tunate gentleman’s eyes, of which the sight is entirely de- stroyed. Two local medical gentlemen were called in, and Mr. Square, of Plymouth, also attended. The case is a very serious one. THE board of Trinity College, Dublin, have elected the Rev. Dr. Malet to the office of librarian in that institu- tion, vacant by the death of the Rev. Dr. Todd. AN outbreak of measles 11 of a formidable character " among the girls in the schools at Chelsea belonging to the parish of St. George, Hanover-square, was reported by the medical officer at the last meeting of the guardians. FROM Dr. Philipson’s returns of sickness in New- castle and Gateshead we learn that typhoid fever has been on the increase in those towns of late. The significant cir- cumstance is noted that, of eleven cases of typhoid in Gates- head, four occurred in one family living at Bill Quay, a ’’, locality which we remember in connexion with the cholera outbreak of 1853. GUILDFORD WATER-SUPPLY. -A committee ap- pointed by the local board to inquire into the rights of ownership as between the corporation and others over the waste land at Mill Mead, where it is contemplated to sink the well for the new water-supply of the town, have re- ported that those rights 11 are not well defined." The com- mittee recommend, however, that instead of attempting to get those rights settled, which would involve great and in- convenient delay, the board, having the assent of the cor- poration, should go on with the well, at the same time giving notice of their willingness to pay a reasonable com- pensation to whoever may hereafter turn out to be the rightful owners of the land. This common-sense view of the case was: we notice with satisfaction, adopted by the board, so we presume no delay will arise in carrying out thi-s .nmcb.-Jl&bgr;9.Md improvement. MM ppaintment5. Notes, Short Comments, and Answers toCorrespondents.

THE ANTI-VACCINATION; CRUSADE. IT may always be regarded as indicative of the intrinsic weakness of a causewhen its advocates are constrained to adopt mere vulgar sensationalismas a means of attracting attention. To print the announcement of a lec-ture against vaccination upon red handbills, bearing the sanguinaryheading, "Blood! Iago ! Blood!" and concluding with the monition,"Hear, 0 ye People"-an instance, by the way, of the freedom with whichsacred quotations are often applied to all sorts of incongruous purposes,- may seem to the Anti-Vaccination League a very clever proceeding; andthat such a bait might allure an audience in parts of Whitechapel orStepney cannot be surprising to anybody who knows of what class thepopulation of such localities is largely composed. That it is otherwisewhen an attempt is made to use such a clumsy contrivance for entrappinglisteners in a neighbourhood where the educated middle classes form thebulk of the community, is clear from the circumstances attendant on a"lecture" delivered at the Angell Town Institution, Brixton, on the 30thult., by a Dr. Morrisson, the subject (publicly announced in the fashionabove described) being "Anti-Vaccination Warnings." We have no inten-tion of inflicting upon our readers an analysis of the strange compoundwhich did duty for a lecture on this occasion, beyond remarking that itsintention apparently was to show that vaccination is no protection againstsmall-pox, and that the existing law is a means of enforcing nationalblood-poisoning. As for proof, in any legitimate sense, of these remarkablepropositions, we need hardly say there was none. The lecturer had treated, was treating, or had heard of, cases of consumption and other diseasesoccurring after vaccination-ergo, vaccination was the cause. A younglady, aged sixteen years, was troubled with pimples; she had been revac-cinated a year or two previously. Is not cause and effect very obvious inthis case ? Another young lady-the lecturer is fortunate in his practice,evidently-had small-pox, although she bore the marks of successful vac-cination, and the disease, it was gravely said, only fell just short of it,worst form. Of course she would not have had small-pox at all had shenot been vaccinated. In short, a more dreary affair than this " lecture,"delivered as it was to an audience of not more than fifty persons, cannotbe imagined. Even Mr. Gibbs, who presided, could not conceal his chagrinat the scanty attendance, especially as he seemed to have a notioR thatthe fact of Mr. Spurgeon’s attack of small-pox ought to have filled theroom. There were ten persons (including chairman and lecturer) on theplatform, of whom four were of a sex to whom it could hardly have beenpleasant to hear so much about syphilis and other medical matters as theyhad to listen to. Dr. Pearce, " of Belgravia" (sic in announcement), whowas to have addressed the meeting, with " other gentlemen," were con-spicuous by their absence; and save the proposal of a vote of thanks tothe lecturer by a "reverend" gentleman, and a closing speech from Mr.Gibbs, nobody contributed a fraction to the intellectual enjoyment of theevening. Of course Mr. Gibbs pretended to assume that the doctors ofthe neighbourhood were afraid to face him because none of them answeredhis challenge in the room. The medical men of Brixton were, we are happyto believe, engaged in work far more beneficial to the public than that oflistening to the nonsense of the Anti-Vaccination League.

THE ApOTH:EO-4.BIES’ HALL, DUBLIN.To the Editor of THE LANCET.

SIR,-My attention having been called to a letter signed "Enquirer," inyour last impression, in which the writer has taken the liberty to designate" the examination of the Apothecaries’ Hall, Dublin, as far as Anatomy andPhysiology are concerned, a consummate farce," I feel myself bound, as oneof the examiners appointed by the Court of Directors, to give to this state-ment the most unqualified denial; for no candidate is admissible to exami-nation without proof of having first spent two winter sessions in the studyof these subjects and in the performance of dissections; and on presentinghimself for the licence of the Hall, every candidate undergoes an examina-tion on these subjects, which lasts two hours, is conducted by members ofthe College of Surgeons here, and is carried on by questions written, oral, and demonstrative; and while these questions bear more or less reference topractical medicine, the subjects themselves are comprehensively dealt with, and in no instance is the candidate passed unless his marks attain theminimum of forty per cent., as prescribed by the rule of the Court of theHall.Adverting to the returns of this year from the medical departments of the
