BIS B1SS Ch Northwind Stormy Night

My Breeding program began and continues to cross Ruffway, Kinderland, Orlane, bloodlines. I wish

to thank Georgia and the late Bob Palmer, Ellen Lonigro, and Joan Kendall for their dedication to our

breed. My gratitude to Mary Ann and Daryl Strysick, " Mardel" for sharing our beloved Willy Wonka.

And to Roberta and Nick Lombardi for sharing many of their Rufkin dogs with me. Rudy and Rockers

are both behind Hope. Roberta is also her co-breeder. The Ta Sen Lhasas of Susan Giles also con-

tribute heavily through Frosty. Shirley and Ward Scott, Shyr-Lyz, Blossum Dillon, Cherryshores, Jane

Bunse, Maraja were all mentors to me. Thankyou! Georgia and Bob Palmer hold a special place in

my heart, for making themselves available, not only to me, but to all newcomers in our breed. We

were very fortunate to have people who loved this breed enough to share their experience and hard

earned knowledge. I am proud to carry on the tradition.

ALAC Code of EthicsPreamble

"The American Lhasa Apso Club is an organization devoted to thepreservation and welfare of the Lhasa Apso Breed. The Lhasa Apso isthe result of centuries of Asian culture, and as such deserves to behonored and protected for its historical and esthetic merit as well as itsmodern use as a companion. To this end, the American Lhasa ApsoClub has defined a standard of excellence for the breed, and sponsorsexhibitions for the comparison and improvement of the breeding popu-lation and for the education of our breeders. Our goal is to produce ananimal which is uniform in type and sound of mind and body, and suitedto its original purpose as a small indoor guard dog and companion to

man.Dedicated breeders of the Lhasa Apso are distinguished from thosewho exploit the breed solely for profit by their adherence to a set ofethical principles. The welfare of each individual Lhasa Apso, and thewelfare of the entire breed, governs our behavior in all aspects of breed-

ing, exhibiting and selling. The American Lhasa Apso Club endorsesthe following as the ethical standard of all true lovers of the breed."

BreedingI. Members contemplating breeding a litter, or who allow the useof their stud dog to the same end, should direct their efforts to-ward producing Lhasa Apsos of exceptional quality. Each mating

should ideally be planned with the intention of improvement yetpreservation of the breed. Breedings should be done with the ulti-mate goal of achieving excellence according to the Breed stan-dard. Type, temperament, health and conformation of both sireand dam should be carefully considered in the planning of anybreeding in order to accomplish the goals of preservation andimprovement. This presupposes a careful study of the breed stan-dard, pedigree, and genetics.2. No Lhasa Apso showing a serious inherited defect in type, struc-ture or temperament should be used for breeding. Bitches shouldbe bred only when in prime breeding condition, fully mature andin robust health mentally and physically. Ideally, no bitch shouldbe bred prior to twelve months of age and not more than two outof three seasons.

Owners of stud dogs should not accept for breeding any bitch that showsa serious inherited defect in type, structure, or temperament, the repro-duction of which is likely to be detrimental to the breed. It is ideal if allstud contracts include an agreement, to be signed by the owner of thebitch, that no puppies resulting from the mating will be wholesaled orsold to pet shops, a practice the Club considers grossly detrimental tothe Lhasa Apso breed. Stud owners should strongly encourage the own-ers of the bitches that any pet quality puppies from the resulting litterbe sold on spay/neuter contracts. Breeding Lhasa Apso litters for "petsonly" is considered detrimental to the long-term welfare of the breed.Members should refrain from this practice and should refuse stud ser-vice to owners of bitches for whom this is the goal.If a dog or bitch has produced any offspring with serious inheriteddefects detrimental to the animal's well-being and produces like re-sults with a different mating partner, it would be in the best interest ofthe breed that the owner refrain from further use of this animal forbreeding.

Kennel Management3. Ethical breeders should be financially and situationally capableof providing for the special health and nutritional needs of broodbitches and their litters before doing a breeding. Members plan-ning a breeding should consider the local market and the possiblenecessity of caring for puppies for several months until sold. Pup-pies should be sold in a clean and healthy condition and should beat least eight weeks or older to make the necessary adjustment toa new home safely. No adult or puppy should be sold withoutadequate protection against disease.

Members are encouraged to maintain the best possible standards

of canine health, sanitary kennel conditions, and veterinary care, including mental health (such as contact with people and expo-sure to the outside world).4. Members known to have deliberately violated American Ken-

nel Club rules regarding registration and showing of dogs should

expect the consequences of being reported.Sales5. Ethical breeders should be discriminating in the placement oftheir Lhasa Apsos. The Club does not consider ethical any of thefollowing practices: the consignment or sale outright to pet shops, catalogue houses, animal brokers, or other commercial sources ofdistribution; and the donation of Lhasa Apsos as prizes for raffles,

auctions, or contests; the wholesaling of Lhasa Apso litters or theover-breeding of their own bitches for profit, with no regard forquality. Sales to persons known or suspected of such practices isconsidered detrimental to the breed.6. According to American Kennel Club rules, breeders should

furnish the signed American Kennel Club registration or transfer

with each puppy sold unless a written agreement is made with the

purchaser at the time of sale that papers will be withheld. The

Club strongly supports the practice of accompanying the sale of

all puppies or adults determined pet quality with a spay/neutercontract and written agreement that no AKC registration papers

will be transferred until the seller has received veterinary certifi-cation that surgery has been performed.7. Ideally, breeders should provide a three-generation pedigree, instructions on care including grooming, feeding, and completehealth care. Lhasa Apsos released should be in good health to thebest of the breeder's knowledge. Breeders dedicated to the LhasaApso fancy should be available to their buyers for consultation, even after completion of a sale. Breeders should try to assist theserious novice in his understanding of the breed.8. It would best serve the breed that any Lhasa Apso puppy oradult, which might be considered to have a serious hereditary de-fect or a serious deviation from the standard, be sold without pa-

pers and spayed/neutered (this should be clearly understood byboth the buyer and the breeder and a written agreement to thiseffect signed by both parties), or humanely destroyed.

Advertising9. The value and quality of the Lhasa Apso should be upheld in

both advertising and selling. Advertising should not to be wordedso as to attract undesirable buyers or to encourage raising dogs

for profit. Ethical breeders would not engage in false or mislead-ing advertising or otherwise misrepresent their Lhasa Apsos; norwould they malign their competitors by making false or mislead-ing statements regarding their competitors' Lhasas, breeding prac-tices, or person.Written Agreements and Health Guarantees10. Members are encouraged to utilize and maintain signed cop-ies of written agreements detailing price, description of dog, guar-antees, condition and understanding for all transactions involvingtheir dogs. These include co-ownership agreements; sales of pet, companion, or show Lhasa Apsos; stud agreements; brood ma-tron leases; and any other transaction involving transfer or utili-zation of a Lhasa Apso. Copies of such records could be used, when appropriate, by the Club Board in hearing any grievanceinvolving an ethics complaint against a member.

The sale of all puppies and adults are best accompanied by a writtenhealth guarantee. Should a show or breeding prospect develop a seri-

ous congenital, hereditary, or disqualifying defect after sale, breederscould:(1) replace the dog with one of equivalent value believed to be free of

such defect, or(2) refund the sale price upon return of the dog, or(3) refund the difference between the price paid and the price of a pet

or or or Alotfrorn/741b OverNews from the Pacific Northwest

Even though the show season has slowed downconsiderably in our part of the country, theNorthwest's ALAC members have not. BeckyHughes has been busy on many fronts- she finishedher "Leo" at 13 months of age and the same day wentBest Bred-By In Show with him. As our area's rescuechair, she succeeded in finding a home for a rescueLhasa and on a personal note, became a grandmotherfor the 2" time! Congratulations Becky! By now, many of you will have seen the "mocumentary"movie Best in Show and you may have wonderedwho that lovely lady with the Lhasa was moving byin several shots. Well, it's none other than our ownArlene Miller along with her bitch "Salsa" — it tookabout a week of 12-14 hour days to film the footagein which she appears- what a great keepsake forArlene to have. Thanks to gracious hosts Joe andLisa Mushel, CLAF'ers had a great evening at theirannual fall party with a Halloween theme. As is thetradition of CLAF potlucks, the food was deliciousand the opportunity for eating too much takenseriously. To wear off the calories, everyone playedBunco—a fast paced game which necessitatesmoving to a new table every 3-4 minutes. The bigwinner was Naomi Hanson who received the prize ofa beautiful Christmas lap quilt. Pat Jackson had thehonor of being the person with the lowest number ofpoints, which also merited a prize. In November, ourALAC President Bobbie Wood came out west to be apresenter on the Lhasa Apso at the WashingtonJudges' Association annual seminar weekend. Shewas assisted by Don and Naomi Hanson, Carol Hess,Ann Lanterman and Barb Corbett. Judging by theattendees' positive comments on the Lhasa presenta-tion, the ALAC breed standard committee can beproud of their efforts on this "work in progress".This particular seminar weekend included amongother things presentations on 22 different breeds andwas open to judges and fanciers alike. Look for oneto attend in your area!

Until next time,Jan Bruton

New exhibitor of Lhasas, Nancy Stephens, isdoing a nice job with her boy, Chiyoko-Ku-Ther R AJust Tex, aka "Tex". She has several points on him. Itis so good to see the newcomers do well!

Robin Fisher has a new puppy just coming out- and she is doing great! Ku-Ther's Diamonds AreForever, aka "Diamond Girl", still just 6 months old,has won her class all but one time. And her litterbrother, Ku-Ther's Spy Who Loved Me, aka "Scooter"has already won a 3 point major! His owner, Amanda, has done a wonderful job with him. He and DiamondGirl show like little professionals.

The Lhasa Apso Club of Greater Houston ismaking plans for another of its fabulous Christmas par-ties. We have great food and an auction of some reallygood stuff. Something for everyone! And a gift ex-change that is a riot. People keep taking all the goodstuff that you took from someone else. Aren't theynaughty?!

Looking forward to Christmas. My family willall go to my daughter's home in Colorado for the Holi-days. It will be colder than we ever get down here inTexas, but we will have my daughter and her familyfrom Florida, my Mom and Mom-In-Law, and my hus-band, Wilmer, there with my older daughter's family.Thank goodness for competent dog sitters!

The Spirit of New England

The past month can be described in just threelittle words - BUSY...BUSY...BUSY!! In mid-October, MLAC hosted their first ever back-to-backAgility Trials. What a hoot! Chaired by Sy Bigmanand manned (or womanned, as the case may be) byMary Powers, Stephanie Kodis, Rita Cloutier, JoeMenyo, Ed Moses and Yours Truly, I can safely saythat all involved now have a whole new appreciationfor the sport of Agility. Good friends, good food, good learning, and good weather, all in all, it was agrand weekend!

All Hallows Eve brought out the ghosts andgoblins for MLAC as well as some really, really nicepuppies at our annual Halloween B-Match. Nicelyjudged by Mrs. Julie Rembrandt Seeley, Best Puppyin Match went to Mary Powers with Mokiemas'sQuiet Riot and Best Adult and Best In Match went toJanice Tilley with Solitude's Tigger Tinzin. Nicegoin', ladies! In "non-regular" competion (andthrust me, folks, this was about an non-regular youwant to see it get!), Mary took home the top honors

in the costume contest as William Tell with"Leonard" sporting an apple on his head! Best AdultHandler was none other than Rita Cloutier with"Dougie" and Best Junior went to one of our newclub members Jen Dargie. Match Chair Carol Kodissimply out did herself this year with a wonderfulline-up of trophies and a beautiful show set-up. Andas always, MLACers brought everything but thekitchen sink so far as refreshments were concerned,so it's a sure thing that nobody went home hungry!

In the point shows, Lewiston-Auburn, ME,proved to be woth the trip for Maureen Stretch as shecame home with two BOBs on Ch. Sutra's GoldenDiamond. The Springfield weekend had MaryPowers piloting Ch. Anbara Alasara Smart Aleck to avery nice BOB and Rita Cloutier took top honors thenext day with Ch. Ransi's GeinK Tom Foolery. Bothdays, Sandy Dellano took WB with her little goldenbeauty and Sunday had Janice Tilley taking thepoints with "Tigger". CONGRATULATIONS TOALL!!!

On the medical front, Arna Margolies isrecovering from an automobile accident that occurredright in front of her parents home. And althoughArna is now feeling better, her BRAND NEWSubaru Outback Sedan sustained major damage andis still at the auto-surgeon getting a new lease on life! And I understand that Mild Cooney has been havingsome health problems and has been wearing a heartmonitor for the past few weeks. Yo, Mild, take iteasy!!!

That's about it for this month. Happy, happyholidays to all and, as we approach the New Year of2001, just remember to ALWAYS keep on truckin'and keep on brushin'!!!!

The ALAC BULLETIN

I managed to attend the CMLAF Specialty, butI had to make a quick dash in and out as I had left dogsat home. Rita Cloutier judged the Sweeps. Best InSweeps went to Ann Burton's Suntory Shiraz. Best OfOpposit was Orlane's Piece of Cake, owned by Kim-berly Cardamone. Dana Read judged the regularclasses. WD and BOW went to Raffles Porthos DeVallon, WB went to Misti Acres Moon Shadow, BOSwas Ch. Anbara Alsara Smart Aleck, and BOB went toCh. Ta Sen Victory Tip Toe. The day went verysmoothly - the club did a wonderful job. Surprisinglythere was plenty of grooming space. There was foodafter judging. It was good to see that Bev Drake man-aged to get out of the house for a little bit after herhusband's accident. There still won't be any word onhis leg until they take the brace off in Mid-December.And it was so good to see Ann Burton there as well. Atthis time, she is still at her parent's house, but she isback to work accomplishing what she can in a 3-4 hourday. EASY ANN!!! Norma Penia handcrafted somewonderful trophies for the Specialty, luckily I managedto get one winning a class. That alone was worth mytrip. I wished I had more time to speak with peopleafter judging, but that's life in dogs!

Other news includes Nancy Plunket fmishingTabu CL Genuine Reflection in Cumberland, MD, GinaPastrana got a major on Bayvvind Ivgotfrndsnlowplcsand Ch. Anbara Alsara Smart Aleck seems to be mak-ing his presence known with Debbie Burke taggingalong for the ride.

The Soaring Gull Circuit in Virginia Beach wasprivileged enough to see Jeanne Hope out and about. It seems like forever since anyone has seen her! Shepicked up a couple of points with Hope-full Heir ofHappiness (she is lacking only singles). I managed topick up a single on Thangshing Summer Storm andSolitude Hi Tide Fools Rush In. Ch. Ta Sen VictoryTip Toe took the breed the first day, having to share therest of the weekend with Ch. Anbara Alsara SmartAleck. But Susan was off in the Caribbean; so threedifferent handlers piloted Tulip during the weekend.Hope you had fun, Susan!

As we speak, the three-day show in Salisbury,MD, is taking place. Unfortunately there weren't anymajors, so I am keeping busy at home instead. I amheaded to New England for Thanksgiving and will at-tend the Springfield, MA, shows. But I'll keep an eyeon all that is going on from the computer. Isn't it great

to be able to keep tabs on everything from whereveryou are?!

I wish everyone a wonderful holiday season(personally, I'm hoping for some snow in New En-gland!).

Southern Salutations

Ringtime - The Jacksonville show brought asmile to Ruth Hayden's face. "Dolly" went WB and"Roger" took BOW. The next weekend at Venice, PattyLotus Marqueen's "Dainty" was WB. Alan Loso andMike Santora had BOW with their "Tag" and BOB with"P.I.". Phyllis and Wayne Huffstetler have been doingmore than well with their puppy "Gabriel", and this isright after they got him from Peggy Huffman! BarbaraPeterson's Ch. "Devil" makes the third champion forhis sire and her special "Franlde" is now retired, hav-ing achieved in his brief career two Goup 2's and twoGroup 4's.

Jots - "Trouper", the special Peggy so success-fully handled for Kendall Brooks, as gone back to bewith him in Canada. Now she will concentrate on herpuppy "Godiva". Peggy is off to Memphis for Thanks-giving to visit her family and to thoroughly spoil hergrandchildren. Laura Wright has been bitten by the"agility bug". Her Boarder Collie, "Bizzi", does out-standingly well in the ring, but it wasn't until she saw a10 year old Lhasa gain his title that she thought "OH!"Now, young "Maggie" and her 6 1/2 years old mother"Winifred" are training for the big time! Alan and Mikeare excited about leasing their "P.J." son "Phil", co-owned by Daryl Martin, to Anna Margarita Keidel inBrazil. He'll not only be shown there, but also at theWorld Show in Portugal.

Hopes - Hopefully, by the time this appears,Ruth Hatcher will have all hospital time behind herand will be feeling fit as a fiddle. Also, Ruth Haydenhas had a needle biopsy on a spot in her lung, whichwill certainly prove benign if good wishes control theresults. Lastly, Barbara's ongoing knee problems arenot only a pain but more than inconvenient!

Have a wonderful Holiday Season!

On The Obedience Front

Congratulations to the 12 Lhasas and their owners whohave earned Obedience and Agility titles through Au-gust 2000! Check out the results published in this Bul-letin. An immense amount of time and patience hasgone into training for these classes. If you know anyof these fine teams, be sure to offer them your con-gratulations on a job well done.

As this goes to press, the new obedience regu-lations have just taken effect. I was expecting chaos inthe Open B and Utility B rings since the order of exer-cises now changes with each trial, but was pleasantlysurprised to see only mild confusion. The order wasannounced 45 minutes before the start of the class andby watching the first few exhibitors, handlers were ableto transition between exercises fairly well. The judgesset up their rings so the flow moved naturally from oneside of the ring to the other without a lot of wastedmovement between exercises. The changes certainlyconfused more than a few of the dogs. Several dogs inthe Open B class were just sure they could leave thering after the Broad Jump, even though there were twomore exercises to complete. Overall, the dogs and han-dlers seemed to enjoy the variety.

Kudos to Cascade Lhasa Apso Fanciers!CLAP will be the trophy sponsor for the Highest Scor-ing Lhasa at the Washington State Obedience TrainingClub trials in 2001. Since most local Lhasa clubs can'toffer obedience classes at their specialties, sponsoringan obedience award at an all-breed show is a nice wasto let the obedience exhibitors know they are not for-gotten. It's certainly not the trophy itself that matters, but the support and encouragement from fellow Lhasalovers. I hope all local clubs will consider sponsoringa Lhasa obedience or agility award in conjunction withtheir local specialties this year.

Obedience and agility news travel through thegrapevine slowly. Drop me a line with your latest bragso our members will know what's been going on in theperformance rings.

President's MessageHello ALAC Members,

By the time you read this, the Holidays will have come andgone, we will be in a New Year and hopefully will have anew U.S. President. This is such a special time of year, sofull of joy and anticipation of things to come. It is a time ofgiving and good will and I'm sure the holiday parties willbring us all together because of our all-consuming passion— the Lhasa Apso. Sometimes when I think about my life inthe last 30 years, the Lhasa Apso has brought me the verybest friends, some of the highest highs and some of thelowest lows. It has always been emotionally consuming, highly educational and very worthwhile.

With the New Year, we start all over again with a cleanslate. Getting those puppies trained so they'll be ready forthe National, starting a new special that shows greatpromise or planning that litter that will produce that"perfect" puppy. It's great to have that ability to start againwith all the hope and excitement of thier promise. The first major event of the New Year is of courseWestminster Kennel Club. And what an event it is! If youthink it is just a two day dog show how surprised youwould be to find it is a week of parties, theatre, seminars, specialties, meetings and fabulous restaurants. ALAC willhold a board meeting on Sunday morning so please submitin writing any concern you would like addressed by theboard to our Secretary, Jan Graunke. We have quite a fewissues on the agenda but we will always be happy torecognize your ideas. Lhasa Apsos are judged on Mondayso that is the day to come and plan to spend the day withour fellow exhibitors on the "bench". It is a day to see dogsfrom all over the country and the top 5 Lhasas who wereinvited to attend should be there. It is always a place tosome of the best dogs in the country.Don't forget this is the year of our new specialty date inOctober. Committees have already started work at puttingthis event together. As you know our specialty takes a great deal of hard workand I know that the committee heads could all use help inmany areas. This is your specialty, so if you would like tovolunteer for a committee please contact Steve Campbell,Show Chairman, or myself and we will direct you to wherehelp is most needed. I know Debi Walsleben is already onthe job with raffle items, and the trophy pledges should begoing out soon. Every year the National just seems to getbetter and better and that is due to the hard work of manypeople, you included. So please volunteer to helpwhereever you can and we will make this specialty evenbetter than ever before.

I will close with the wish that every member had a wonder-ful Holiday season and that every Lhasa had a new toy tocuddle in his nice warm bed (or your bed, which ever isappropriate). I wish that 2001 brings you success in theshow ring no matter what title you are seeking and may weall be the kind of person our dogs think we are.As always write or e-mail me anytime concerning whatever is on your mind.

c.21dvice for puppy Owners:The best piece of advice ever given anypuppy owner is to get newspaper, rollit up very tight, secure it with a rubber bandand leave it on the coffee table. Then when the puppy piddles in the house, chews up a slipper, or does anythingit is not supposed to: You simply take thenewspaper and bang it on the top ofyour head very hard while repeating "Ishould have been watching my puppy!"
