The school supplies that normally are tossed out at the end of the school year are gathered, cleaned, and delivered to teens at Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth. Siena Prenger ’18, and her sister Savannah ’14, shared information on their organization called Teens Helping Teens. They help to provide material items as well as academic and emotional support to teens who also count on Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth as they navigate through their personal struggles. The attendees were very impressed with our presenters and had many positive comments about their work. BGHS students in attendance included Brandon Wulff ’15 and Alex Perron ’15, who were presenters at last year’s Summit; Kassandra Tate ’15, who started the Bishop Gorman Jewelry Club; Maggie DiFederico ’15, who is heading up her second year of Twice As Nice recycled formal wear and Simon Zemana, ’15, who is our Campus Ministry liaison to ASG. Registration Registration paperwork for the 2015-2016 school year has been mailed. If you do not receive a packet, please contact the Finance Department, 702-476-4026. Classes are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. Before your child can select courses for the 2015-2016 academic year, the Enrollment Agreement and Tuition Fee Addendum forms must be completed and signed by a parent/guardian. These completed forms, along with the $500 registration fee, must be turned in to the Finance Department before your students will be scheduled to meet with their counselors.
Financial Aid You can apply for financial aid for the 2015-2016 school year by logging on to www.bishopgorman.org where there is a link to FACTS Grant and Aid Company under the Admissions tab. Submit your application, pay the required fee online and please be aware that you must be verified by FACTS Grant and Aid before your application can be reviewed by the Tuition Assistance Committee. Financial assistance does not renew automatically. You must submit a new application each year to be considered for assistance.

Bishop Gorman senior, Lauren Willmore, is the creator of the name and the nonprofit organization, Bedtime Books that brings some joy into the lives of many bedridden children in Clark County hospitals. An illness and a hospital can be scary situations for anyone, but for children it can be even more devastating, particularly in the case of a long term or very serious illness. The mission of Bedtime Books is to support children receiving intensive hospital treatment while promoting literacy.
Lauren has taken it upon herself to alleviate the suffering of hospitalized children by this unique and very important effort. Several times each week, she visits these children in their hospital rooms, talks with them and
reads stories to them individually. When she departs, she leaves the book with the child as a gift and as a remembrance of the pleasant time she has spent with each child. She makes more than one hundred visits each month.
This wonderful program was inspired by her own experience as a patient at a young age and her memory of the comfort she received from hearing her favorite story before falling asleep.
During each visit Lauren has been able to meet and inspire children. Her goal is to let them know that there is hope. “I know the children are touched by the fact that someone outside of their own family really cares about them. In a sense perhaps it reminds them that God loves each of them individually and without reservation.”
Bishop Gorman seniors are all so very busy, and Lauren is no exception. She is a member
of the We the People Team, a gifted athlete (tennis) and a very active member of NHS, National Charity League and Best Buddies. Bedtime Books is another expression of Lauren’s commitment to serve her community demonstrating her compassion for children who are in need of comfort and encouragement.
In the fall, Lauren hopes to attend either USC, Pepperdine University or UC Berkeley and pursue a career in Social Entrepreneurship.

The Bishop Gorman chapter of the National Honor Society is collecting children’s books –
new or gently used - to help support the Bedtime Books project. NHS students earn service recognition for book donations, but anyone in the Bishop Gorman community can contribute by a collection box in room 309. These books will brighten the lives of children in local hospitals who are receiving intensive treatment. Please see Mr. Goertemiller with any questions.

If you’ve walked down the 300 hall lately, you may wonder
what you smell. About 40 cats were being dissected in Honors
Human Physiology. Students were required to dissect various
internal organs, as well as muscles, paying close attention
to their origins and insertions. Squeamish students were
immediately transformed into scientists, eager to discover as
much as possible about the cats. Cats were studied because of
their similar musculature to that of humans.

Many Thanks MITE BOX!Every Tuesday morning we have our school-wide Mite Box collection. This money is used to help the needy of Las Vegas. Our student-run Matthew 25 Board meets every Tuesday after school to review applications from social workers. We often have up to 10 applications for them to review at one meeting! So far this year, our Matthew 25 Board has awarded Mite Box funds to over 95 individuals and families; offering assistance with rent, medical bills, food, and other necessities to keep them in their homes and functioning as normally as possible.
We have been in school for seven months and have already raised over $32,000 for Mite Box! We are so thankful for the continued generosity of our students and families. You are truly making a big difference with your donations. We would like to share some of the thank you notes that we have received thus far. These are just a few of the multiple thank you cards we have received and it is clear that our Mite Box fund has touched many lives.

Scholastic Art & Writing Awards began in 1923, and the works were adjudicated on originality, skill, and personal voice or vision. While ‘yes’ and ‘no’ paddles used to be a part of the process, jurors today use a blind process, where no student information is attached to the works. The visual and literary arts include 28 categories, with writing ranging from essay, poetry, novel, scripts, to the memoir (the dreaded senior college essay). Two seniors placed in the most difficult category—the 4-work portfolio with justification essay. COURSE REGISTRATION: Course registration for the 2015-2016 school year is underway. In order for registration to take place, 2 items MUST be completed:

Admission decisions from each of the colleges to which you have applied must be recorded in order to pick up your cap and gown in May.

When you receive the scholarship notification, please give a copy of your scholarship letter to Mrs. Burford in Student Services. Scholarships are listed in the graduation program and we want to make sure that you get recognition for those you have received. JUNIORS:You will be taking the Nevada Department of Education High School Proficiency tests during the week of March 2-6. The tests are Math, Reading, Writing, and Science and given in the morning, Monday-Thursday. Students will be divided alphabetically. Please encourage your student to get a good night sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, bring two #2 pencils with them, and in general, have a serious attitude about these tests. We will receive the results in May. Make-up testing will be done in November for students who are absent for any test, or need to re-take a section. This is a full day of school for all students, including juniors and seniors. Students MUST be in uniform.
