AbstractBitgene blockchain (Bitgene Blockchain) is committed to adopting innovative technology on

blockchain system to associate “digital gene” which is imperceptible but recognizable via the computer program with digital content, which will realize identification, transaction and advertisement distribution of digital content online(internet, mobile internet) and offline(multi screen, print) .

Blockchain technology has a transformative application prospect in the fields of digital rights protection and digital asset management, but most of the actual use of digital content is not on the blockchain, the hash value of the identity of the blockchain is often changed when the digital content is used outside the blockchain, thus, it is impossible to associate the same content in the actual application scenario within and outside the blockchain. 3.1.Digital content & Digital Economy

The concept of "Digital Content Industry" was first proposed in the Western Conference of the Seven Countries in 1995. In 2005, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) believed that the economy was moving from tangible products manufacturing to high value intangible goods production.

The global digital economy is booming unprecedentedly. According to the “China Digital Economy Development White Paper (2017)”, the US’s digital economy has reached US $10.2 trillion, accounting for 56.9% of GDP, and the UK’s digital economy has reached US $1.4 trillion, accounting for more than 48.4% of GDP, and the digital economy of Japan has reached 2.0 trillion US dollars, accounting for more than 47.5% of GDP. In 2016, China’s total digital economy reached 22.6 trillion yuan, accounting for more than 30% of GDP ,a nominal increase of nearly 19% year-on-year. The digital economy has become the core driving force for economic growth in recent years. It is estimated that by 2020, China's digital economy will exceed 32 trillion yuan.

3.2.The Digital Content industry scale

In recent years, with the application of new technology, digital content related industries have been developing rapidly. According to PWC "global entertainment and media industry outlook 2015-2019"

report, the compound annual growth rate of digital rights will reach 11.87% in 2014-2019, higher than the non-digital publishing market growth rate of 3.86%, in 2019, the penetration rate of digital publishing is expected to reach 32.09%, and the market size will reach 462.1 billion US dollar.

In China, the gross output value of the digital content industry in 2016 (including IP copyright trading and authorized derivatives) was 572.085 billion yuan, which was 29.9% higher than that in 2015 (Tencent Research Institute). The government also proposed in the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan for National Strategic Emerging Industries Development” that by 2020, the digital creative industry

With the development of digital content industry, users have moved from the passive audience role of PGC Professional Generated Content to the forefront. In the era of "User-generated Content" and "Professional User-generated Content" users’ deep involvement in content creation and even as an occupation("occupationally-generated content" (OGC)) has gradually become the mainstream of the industry. According to statistics from Tencent Research Institute, approximately 140 million users in China became creators of digital content in 2016, 370 million users shared digital content, and 5.1 million users paid for digital content.

3.3.The pain point of copyright protection in the digital content industry

Mobile Internet has driven the rapid development of digital content industry. Digital content has seen new characteristics such as decentralization of distribution channels, personalization of consumption, instant interaction between authors and audiences. The copyright issue of digital content has also received more and more attention. However, the openness and high mobility of the Internet have brought great difficulties to the protection of copyright. The new technologies of Internet piracy emerge endlessly. The application of new technologies such as P2P technology, aggregated reading and network cloud disk makes the difficulty and cost of copyrights protection by the copyright owners continue to increase.

3.3.1.Lack of means of protection, rampant infringement  According to the “2016 China Network Copyright Protection Annual Report” released by the China

Academy of Information and Communication Technology in 2016 online infringement cases mainly were online video infringement, online picture infringement, online music infringement, and online literature infringement.

Because the application scenarios of the dissemination and use of digital content such as picture, audio and video on the Internet are complex it is difficult to use traditional technology to collect evidence

to determine whether or not infringement occurs and pursue accountability. Even if it is authorized to use, violations may also be committed.

3.3.2.Lack of transaction, creator’s rights cannot be guaranteedAccording to people's daily, China's photographic Copyright Association has found 18000

infringement pictures in 300 primary and secondary school textbooks published by a well known publishing house with 3.6 million yuan in royalties. However, the authors of these pictures have never received royalties.

In the era of UGC, massive information is released everyday, because of lack of integrated copyright certification and contact information content users can not determine the source and copyright of digital content, and do not know from whom to purchase the copyright, there lacks an effective communication and transaction channel for buyers to trade easily with the owner of digital content after the copyright of

3.3.3.Tracing technology outdated, difficult to defend rightsAt present, the main tracing method being used in the digital content industry is to collect evidence,

materials and communicate manually. According to the data, a law firm initiates more than 3000 copyright cases every year, and some companies even need to invest 70% of their personnel for collection of infringement evidence.

In the era of new media, massive amount of digital content is used everyday by various media from multiple channels with fast circulation. After being processed by pirates, digital content can hardly be traced or protected, seriously affecting the rights of creators.

3.3.4.High cost of rights protection, difficulty in submitting evidence Chen Guomeng, President of the Higher People’s Court of Zhejiang Province, China, stated that

“high cost of rights protection, long cycle, difficulty in submitting evidence, and low compensation have always been the bottleneck restricting the judicial protection of intellectual property rights”. Behind the prosperity of the digital content industry is a large number of infringement and piracy activities. There lacks effective copyright protection for original content, the content value cannot be realized, piracy is difficult to prove, and the rights of copyright owners cannot be guaranteed. This limits the originality and innovation of the content and seriously restricts the healthy development of the digital content industry. The digital content industry requires copyright protection and monetization solutions that adapt to industry development.

4. The drawbacks of existing digital content copyright protection solutions

4.1.Disadvantages of traditional solutions

There are two main applications of traditional digital rights protection solutions.Digital rights management (Digital Rights Management, DRM) is a proprietary system with

encryption and access control that technically prevent illegal copying of digital media, or make copying difficult to certain extent, end users must get authorization before using the digital media. DRM restricts the way content is used, so there is a problem of over protection, which not only restricts the user's usage scenarios, but also is not conducive to the dissemination and benefit of the content.

The Electronic Signature Certificate Solution is an authoritative authentication center in the physical world. Through the identification of digital content and rights holders, combined with technologies such as time stamps and electronic signatures, the digital content is issued with a copyright electronic signature certificate as the copyright proof of the content and the basis of handling the infringement.

Although the electronic signature certificate is a valid legal evidence, it relies on the authoritative third party , and the separation of certificate from digital content cannot provide technical protection for the actual use of copyright, restricting the actual implementation effect of copyright protection.

In the field of digital copyright, blockchain projects for the protection of the copyright of pictures, music, and videos are also emerging.For example the United States MineLabs company provides collaborative joint media metadata protocol using blockchain technology to protect copyright of digital pictures and provide encrypted signatures for copyright holders, Metadata protection records have been created for 2 millions of original digital images, and digital libraries in Europe and the United States have become their user base. British musician Imogen Heap used block-chain technology in his single release in 2015, which covered the remuneration, charging, and distribution of songs, saying that the blockchain is like a beacon that records all the information in my songs. However, most of the actual usage scenarios of digital content are not within the blockchain. When the digital content is used outside the blockchain, the hash value of its blockchain identity will often change, thus it is impossible to associate the same content in the actual application scenario within and outside the blockchain to solve the main issue of protection, dissemination, transaction, tracing of the copyright of digital content whose creators are most concerned about.

7.2.Consensus mechanism

Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) is a blockchain consensus algorithm used by BitShares. The consensus algorithm is used to ensure the safety and reliability of the whole blockchain network. The well-known consensus algorithm includes proof of work (PoW) used by Bitcoin, and proof of stake(PoS) used by Peercoin and NXT. These consensus algorithms do not solve the transaction performance problem, especially the POW algorithm consumes a huge amount of power to do the calculation, and the DPoS solves the problem of performance and energy consumption well.

The DPoS algorithm uses the witness mechanism to solve the centralization problem. A total of N witnesses signs the blocks, elected by stakeholders’ voting of the blockchain network. Because of the use of a decentralized voting mechanism, DPoS is more democratic than other systems. DPoS does not completely remove the requirement for trust. The elected delegates representing the whole network sign the blocks, ensuring that the behavior is correct without prejudice. In addition, each signed block is linked to the previous block signed by a trusted node. DPoS eliminates the time consumption that a transaction needs to wait for a certain number of blocks to be validated by non trusted nodes.

By reducing the requirements for validation, the DPoS algorithm greatly improves the speed of the transaction. By trusting a small number of trustworthy nodes, The DPOS algorithm removes the unnecessary steps in the block signing process. The DPoS block can accommodate more transaction volume than PoW or PoS, and the transaction speed is close to the centralized clearing systems such as Visa and MasterCard.

The DPoS is still centralizes to some extent, but this centralization is controlled because each client has the ability to determine which nodes can be trusted. DPoS enables such blockchain network to retain key advantages of the centralization systems while ensuring a certain degree of decentralization. Through fair elections, the system makes it possible for everyone to be a delegate representing the vast majority of users.
