First Plymouth Congregational ChurchSocializing at 6:30pm; Business meetingfollowed by Show and tell at 7:00pmProgram at 8:00pmFiguring out how to work in a way that reflectspersonal voice doesnÕt come with a road map.Too bad, we could use one! Cynthia decidedthere is no right or wrong way to go about it, and thislecture reflects the convoluted path she has taken. She focuses on her own process Ñ asking questionsof the work she does, and using the work to find theanswers. ItÕs all about the process, the experimenta-tion, and even the mistakes. What To Do When You are Uninspired or Stuck?Talking with my artist friends this summer, Ihave found we all have something in commonÑ coming to an end of a project or getting inter-rupted in the middle of one can have a bad effect onour motivation, inspiration or concentration. Thingsthat seemed so clear are now cloudy and work thatwas one effortless, is now difficult and frustrating. What to do?Because this has happened to me severaltimes this summer. Once when I took a week off to goon vacation Another happened after my family came in for a week to visit. Andthe last time, was when I had to drop what I was doing to crate "step-outs" for amagazine article I was writing. Each of these events interrupted my work and Ifound it difficult to get back into the creative stream I was in before the interrup-tion. I found you can't just wander the halls of your studio and "hope" that themoment will magically return. It won't. You could take a few days off to see ifthat would help (but that's what got me in the mess to begin with!). Or maybe, you could find one of your UFO's and finish it! (I forgot. I don't have any UFO's!)But I have discovered a way to get my creative juices flowing again afterthese blockages and it worked for me this summer so I wanted to share it withyou in case you have the same problem.Try Something Completely NewI must have a zillion books, all teaching a new technique for fiber artists. When Ibuy the books, I browse through them, look at the pictures, read a few sentencesand then I get distracted and put the book on the shelf for a later time. Now is thetime to get that book off the shelf and actually try those techniques. Just theprocess of working creatively, helps push me back into the creative stream. Ifound working this way for a day or two made me see my current work in a newlight and I suddenly had new ideas I couldn't wait to try. I was back.

Write an Artist's StatementSometimes, we are so close to our work that we don't understand where we are, where we are going, or what drives us. In my opinion, an artist's statement is areflection of the "inner artist" trying to verbalize to the world. They are not easyto write! In fact, I hired someone to look at my work and write my statement thefirst time. However, now, I find it easy to write about my work because I am get-ting to know my inner artist self better. But when you are stuck, putting downyour vision in writing can help crystallize your thoughts and define what youneed to do with your work. For me this summer, it helped me see that my cur-rent work is all about layering and surface texture so I started to think of newways to express that and that got me back.Practice Your Color SchemesWe all have a color wheel to refer to when we need new combinations and I thinkeveryone could put together a pieces square with the 6 compliments. Or lots ofanalogous squares. But what about doing a slit complimentary square? Or atriad. Just sorting your fabric to find just the right colors for your color schemewill inherently be training your eye to see color in new and exciting ways. youwill get inspired -- I promise. So these are three things I do when stuck. I'd love to hear what you do!Regards,Carol Ann Waugh, FRCQ [email protected]

StillnessIam slowly savoring the book The Architecture of All Abun-dance by Lenedra Carroll. I love that the second section isthe Architecture of Stillness, so perfect given my recentfocus on my newest series of hand stitched textile paintingsabout stillness. The first chapter in this section opens with this quotefrom Robert Rabbin on the nature of great events: "The greatest event we can ever experience is that sudden

stroke of grace which shows us who and what we are, beyondthe world of appearances, beyond conditions and circum-stances, beyond fear and resistance, beyond desire and fulfill-ment, beyond the images and beliefs of the mind. The mostwonderful event is to collide with the unifying Silence beyondall this, untouched by all this. Here in this Silence we encounterour truest potential, already realized. Here in this Silence. ThisSilence which, while beyond all things, is ever-present, sur-rounding us, holding us, sustaining us, feeding us. Entering thedeep forests of this Silence is the greatest and most wondrous ofevents."Lenedra Carroll goes on to say:

"It is the journey into silence that leads to a stillness thatcan inform our actions and our lives with peace and with abun-dance. Just as there are many roads to the Divine, there aremany routes inward: prayer, meditation, nature, solitude, con-

templation, workshops, sacred writings, dance, ceremony, poet-ry, music, chantings, gardening and the practice of religion. Awealth of information about the use of any of these tools forspiritual development is readily available. The method is notnearly as important as the commitment and the practice. It isthe repeated journey into silence that brings the rewards ofstillness. "

My Journey into SilenceCreating art is one of the methods I use to reach stillness. For a while, I was listening to a lot of books on tape whilein my studio and didnÕt have much silence and the creativetime didnÕt bring about the sense of peace it normally does. Iwas feeling disconnected, scattered and ungrounded asresult. My serenity achieved after my week in Costa Rica, which was my inspiration for my stillness series, evaporated. It was time to find that feeling again. So I turned off the booksand went back to creating in silence. And, yes, there it is Ðstillness. So absolutely vital Ð entering that deep forest ofsilence. Everything else is manageable if there is some still-ness.Where do you find [email protected] ¥ http://lisacall.com
