• US-based technology major Microsoft on Thursday announced a string of partnerships, programmes and products aimed to help Indian organisations and governments explore uncharted business areas and enrich customer and citizen experiences.

• The newly launched local Microsoft Cloud and new devices will also catalyse digital transformation, the company said. The tech giant, based in Redmond, California, announced partnerships with threee-commerce players – Justdial, Paytm and Snapdeal – and launched a special cloud initiative for startups aligned to smart cities at its first of its kind technology conference being held in Mumbai.

• “At Microsoft, we strive to empower every Indian citizen and every business and government organisation to achieve more,” Satya Nadella, the Indian-born chief executive of Microsoft, said at the conference.

• India is expected to have 9 crore 4G subscribers and 18 crore 4G smartphones by 2018 and Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular will gain from this growth if Reliance JioInfocomm delays the launch of its 4G services, says a report by Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BofA ML).

• “We expect 4G smartphone base to jump from 5 million in FY 2015 to 180 million (18 crores) by FY 2018, leading to 4G subscribers accelerating from almost zero in FY 2016 to 90 million (9 crores) by FY 2018,” a report by BoFA ML research analysts Sachin Salgaonkar, Karan Parmanandka and Simon Dong-je Woo said.

• The government is ready to work with Microsoft and other information and communication technology (ICT) firms to take India to the next level in digital revolution, Telecommunications Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Thursday.

• “India is standing at the cusp of digital revolution and we are open to work with companies like Microsoft to take India over the cusp,” Prasad said at the first of its kind Microsoft technology conference held in Mumbai.

• Prasad also spoke about different digital initiatives taken by the government including the electronic development fund. “When I became the minister, investments were around `10,000 crores but now it has reached ̀ 1,10,000 crores,” Prasad said.

Army Cloud: Defence Minister inaugurates encryptedcloud system for the Indian Army• A highly encrypted Cloud system of the Indian

Army, similar to that of Google, which will store personnel as well operational data, was today inaugurated by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar in line with the force's plan to be a "digital army".

• Army officials said the latest technology in the field has been incorporated in the implementation of the first-ever software defined date centre, wherein all the resources could be provisioned to different applications on the Cloud with the click of a button.

• Another 'Digital Army Initiative' which was also inaugurated was 'Digi-Locker', which provides a secure and exclusive data storage space to all the units and formation headquarters of the army over its dedicated data network.

Microsoft and Red Hat to deliver new standard forenterprise cloud experiences

• Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq “MSFT”) and Red Hat Inc. (NYSE: RHT) announced a partnership that will help customers embrace hybrid cloud computing by providing greater choice and flexibility deploying Red Hat solutions on Microsoft Azure. As a key component of announcement, Microsoft is offering Red Hat Enterprise Linux as the preferred choice for enterprise Linux workloads on Microsoft Azure.

• Microsoft and Red Hat are also working together to address common enterprise, ISV and developer needs for building, deploying and managing applications on Red Hat software across private and public clouds.

Employment in India’s app economy to double by 2016

• With the number of jobs in India created by apps possibly reaching 600,000 by 2016, the country looks at moving from e-governance to m-governance. India's mobile ecosystem and app economy are thriving, with the latter on the cusp of exponential growth. Its app economy is expected to double direct employment in the industry from 75,000 at present to nearly 160,000 by 2016. If downstream jobs such as sales and marketing as well as customer sales management are also considered, numbers could be more than 600,000 by next year.

• These were the findings of July's study An inquiry into the impact of India's App Economy undertaken by the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) and supported by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI).

• Though smartphone penetration is said to be less than 20 percent, as many as 100 million downloads take place every month, placing India amongst the top five regions for Google Play, the official Android app store.

• Even the number of 3G SIMs in India is also expected to increase from 35 million in 2012 to 272 million by 2017. India also significantly contributes to app development, with roughly 10 percent of apps worldwide developed by Indians either based abroad or at home, the report said.
