BL Series Litium Iron Phosphate batteries

LiFePO4 versus other lithium batteries

The LiFePO4 (LFP) battery uses a lithium-ion-derived chemistry and shares many advantages and disadvantages with other Lithium-ion battery chemistries. However, there are significant differences.

• LFP chemistry offers a longer cycle life than other lithium-ion approaches

• The use of phosphates avoids cobalt’s cost and environmental concerns, particularly concerns about cobalt entering the envi-ronment through improper disposal

• LiFePO4 has higher current or peak-power ratings than LiCoO2

• Although the energy density (energy/volume) of a LFP battery is around 14% lower than that of a new LiCoO2 battery, the additional safety and higher number of cycles off-set this.

• LFPs have a lower discharge rate than lead-acid or LiCoO2.

LiFePO4 cells experience a slower rate of capacity loss than other lithium-ion battery chemistries such as LiCoO2 cobalt or LiMn2O4 manganese spinel lithium-ion polymer batteries or lithium-ion bat-teries.

After one year on the shelf, a LiFePO4 cell typically has approxi-mately the same energy density as a LiCoO2 Li-ion cell, because of LFP’s slower decline of energy density. Thereafter, LiFePO4 likely has a higher density.

SafetyOne important advantage over other lithium-ion chemistries is ther-mal and chemical stability, which improves battery safety.

LiFePO4 is an intrinsically safer cathode material than LiCoO2 and manganese spinel. The Fe-P-O bond is stronger than the Co-O bond, so that when abused, (short-circuited, overheated, etc.) the oxygen atoms are much harder to remove. This stabilization of the redox energies also helps fast ion migration.

As lithium migrates out of the cathode in a LiCoO2 cell, the CoO2 undergoes nonlinear expansion that affects the structural integrity of the cell. The fully lithiated and unlithiated states of LiFePO4 are structurally similar which means that LiFePO4 cells are more struc-turally stable than LiCoO2 cells.

No lithium remains in the cathode of a fully charged LiFePO4 cell while in a LiCoO2 cell, approximately 50% lithium remains in the cathode. LiFePO4 is highly resilient during oxygen loss, which typi-cally results in an exothermic reaction in other lithium cells.

As a result, lithium iron phosphate cells are much harder to catch fire in the event of mishandling especially during charge, however any battery (LiFePO4 included) after exhausting the chemical ability to absorb any more energy can only dissipate overcharge energy as heat. Therefore, our batteries also include temperature monitoring in their integrated safety boards that switch off the charge current when the batteries is in danger of overheating.

With the above, generally accepted, advantages of Lithium Phos-phate it is no wonder that we have selected this technology and have created a range of batteries that can be used in many ap-plications. However, for specific applications and specific uses we can offer alternative technologies in combination with appropriate control boards and safety measures.

WING Li-Phosphate batteriesAlthough a very safe system, the wing BL series has been developed with some extra features not commonly found in cheaper and less powerful lithium phosphate batteries.

Cells:The WING lithium batteries are build using multiple small cells placed in a series and parallel configuration. This results into a more sta-ble system compared to batteries build with 4 large cells in series. A single cell failure will reduce the capacity of the battery but will not make the battery useless, an important safety feature.

Next generation PCM:The integrated PCM in the WING batteries monitors the current, voltage and temperature of the battery and the cells. When the bat-tery is used outside the specifications, this PCM will react and will cut off the power using high power, fast switching FETs. Removal of the source of error (short circuit, over-temperatue, etc.) will reset the PCM and the battery can be used again. Apart from these safety features, all Wing lithium batteries have integrated cell balancing to ensure equal charge of all cells. This prologues the functional life of the batteries.

Limitations: In order to maintain a safe system, the batteries will automatically shut-off when the voltage reaches 10 volt and/or the current is high-er then allowed. Please consult the table on the next page for details.

Rechargeable lithium batteries are not advised for life critical medical applications since these are generally not designed for optimal bat-teries life but for functionality towards the application and patients. Please consult us before using lithium batteries in simular applica-tions.

Some airlines do not accept lithium batteries in your luggage, please check this before booking or offering your suitcase for check-in at the airport to you next (golf) vacation!
