Chairmans letter

To the Players and Parents,

As the 2011/12 season nears completion we can look back on a satisfactory yearwhere the club took a big step forward in terms of building for the future. We startedthe season with 376 players, 62% of whom are under twelve while 30% of ourplayers are girls. With this amount of players we have more than twenty teams inaction every season. Currently, we have just one grass pitch to service all these teams and with the highlevel of activity this pitch becomes unplayable very quickly in winter months in poor weather.

As things stand, our club holds 80% of all training sessions on the astro pitch in the Craughwell NationalSchool grounds which is vital for keeping our players fit but not ideal in preparation for grass pitchmatches.

The lack of availability of training slots on the astro pitch and Coleman's Field means that playerdevelopment and team building is badly curtailed in peak periods during the soccer season. OurScheduling Officer has forecasted our needs in the coming years, all of which clearly indicates the needfor a second playing pitch.

I must also mention that we owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Coleman family who kindly allowed usto use their land for this season and to make an emergency second pitch to accommodate our youngerage group competitions.

The immediate goal right now for CUFC is to upgrade our facilities to cope with the extra demand giventhe increasing number of players and teams. The club has grown enormously in a short space of time andboth the executive committee and club membership are determined to improve the club’s facilities sothat each player is given the opportunity to develop their skills on and off the pitch. By keeping to ourbusiness plan and fundraising initiatives allied with continued growth in the years to come, we hope toadd facilities such as dressing rooms, dugouts and ongoing pitch developments. We are also keen inknowing about any land that may be available to purchase in the area for future development. If you haveany information re opportunities to purchase please don't hesitate to contact a member of the committee.

Finally, we are holding our AGM on Friday 29 June at 8pm in St Michael’s Hall and I would love all parentsto attend. We can never have enough volunteers to help with coaching, committee events, fundraisingand club activities. We have active committee meetings every month but if my fellow committee membersdon’t mind me saying so, I think a few good women on board next season would be a welcome additiongiven the high number of girls now playing for Craughwell. Thank you to all the managers, volunteers, parents and players who gave a lot to our club this season. Enjoy the Summer and come on ye boys ingreen!

mike madden – Junior teamMike has been a revelation since joining Craughwell from Athenry at the start of the season. He is top scorer on the club's senior team who are playing in the Western Hygiene SuppliesLeague Division 2. Mike scored against Naomh Briocain and Kilshanvey Utd which has helpedthe team continue on a four game winning run and climb away impressively from therelegation battle. The team would surely be involved in the promotion race but with just twohome fixtures remaining, games have run out.

Connor Dolan – u14 team Connor Dolan has played a key role in helping our U14 team to finish second in Division 1 ofthe Galway FA League. Craughwell played a strong Knocknacarra A team both home and awayin April and took four points from their nearest league rivals. Operating in central midfield,Connor was pivotal in both matches, winning the important tussles and providing the platformfor the team to gain advantage and momentum.

Jane trehy – u10 Girls teamJane plays at midfield for the U10 girls and has been central to the great season the Girls have hadthis year, they top the Premier league having won all their matches. She has great balance andcontrol on the ball, her passing and shooting are excellent and she will always track back to helpthe defence if needed. She reads the game well and links with the rest of midfield and the forwardsas a real team player. She is her side’s top scorer having netted 16 times in the league so far. Hergoals have ranged from the fantastic long range ones to the great hard fought ones but she hasscored in every match.

u10 Girls blaze the trail The U10 girls have had an excellent season so far having played over 30 matches between challenges, blitz and league. We have two teams from a panel of 19 which includes two U8 girls and they are currently top of the Premier League and are second in the First Division League.

The girls have won all their premier leaguematches well and with one match to go arealmost certain of capturing the title. We had afantastic start in the First division too with threewins, a draw and some excellent performancesbut lost two matches narrowly to teams withmuch "bigger" single team squads, but we willfinish in an excellent second or third position.

Our two U8 girls, Emily Miskella and MollySullivan have been excellent in attack and in goalrespectively. Allanah Doherty, Ailbhe Miskella,Eabha Schukat and Kate Stewart have beenstrong in defence. Ailish Lyons and Aoife Kellyhave provided safe hands in goal. Mia Waters,Aoife O' Connor, Ruth Tansey, Jane Trehy, SarahMcCartin, Niamh Spellman and Sarah Woodshave have been excellent in midfield. RoisinPhillips, Roisin Sheehan, Erin Dolan & EmerMulveen have been a constant threat to all teamsup front.

Girls u8

Well, I have to say, these are a fantastic bunch of girls! Although under 8 by name, they were all Under 7 in reality, with themall being born in 2005. We had 14 girls on the squad and invariably, we had 14 at training. Week-In, Week-Out, rain, hail or shinethey turned up at 9am each Saturday Morning. They trained really hard and improved no end over the season. They are andwill be a mighty little team. Congrats Girls and see you all next September!! Vinny Callaghan, Paul Miskella and Peter O'Hara.

First thanks to the girls and their parents for exemplary attendance at training. Thanks to the mothers who have done the rotaon Saturday morning, helped at training, done jersey laundry and to the people who have helped at matches doing referee, the line and coaching when needed. The girls have been keen to train all year and some of their most competitive matcheshave been in training but once they have pulled on the Craughwell jersey their team work and support for each other has beenfirst class. This squad has great potential; half the team will be U10 again next year so we need more girls born in 2003 and2004 to register in September. Thanks Paul/Peter/John

Girls u12

U12 girls soccer has surpassed all expectations this season with a Squad of 30 players. In the interests of developing all playersand ensuring they all received adequate game time we entered 3 teams in this years leagues. This meant almost 40 matchesfor this bunch of players which has at times stretched the coaching resources but due to the dedication and attitude of thegirls this effort has been worth it. No other Girls Club in the league has 3 teams and all three teams are competitive in theirdivisions in their first season playing competitive soccer for many of them. The U12's had 3 players selected for the GalwayDevelopment squad Laura Cunningham, Ciana Reidy and Amy Dolan which is a great achievement for the club and the girlsinvolved. Two lady coaches have also completed levels 1 and 2 of their FAI Coaching Badges, namely Lorraine Craven and LucyCunningham to further strengthen the coaching structure within the club. Lastly we'd like to thank the girls for their attitude, dedication and enthusiasm which makes it a pleasure to coach them. Lorraine, Lucy and Declan

Craughwell United U7’s started training on the astroturf last September with a squad of 28 budding little stars. We enteredtwo teams namely, Craughwell Swans and Craughwell Foxes into the Oranmore Invitational Tournament. The players reallyenjoyed this tournament which was run every second Sunday for a number of weeks with an awards ceremony on the finalday where each squad member received a lovely medal. It brought the players skills and ability on a huge amount. A bigthanks to all our sponsors, it was much appreciated. Thanks also to the parents who helped out over the season at training, and to the parents for bringing the kids to the games in Oranmore. We hope you enjoyed seeing your little stars shine. Thanksalso to my fellow coaches Cormac, John and Peter. Looking for to seeing you all again next year. Mike Lyons.

For the 2011/12 season we has over 30 enthusiastic players registered for the U8 Boys Squad with up to 25 turning up everyweek to our “early” Saturday morning training slot at 10am on the Astro. This season was spent concentrating on developingbasic soccer skills with all members of the panel so that all had the opportunity to learn and practice ahead of going in toformal competitions next year. This was a very successful strategy as ably demonstrated by the squad members at our end ofseason challenge games against Ramblers (home) and Kiltullagh (home and away) with some great exhibitions of emergingtalent in all positions on the field while recording some well earned wins along the way and most importantly having goodfun playing the Game! Well done to all and see you in September.

U10 Squad has 26 boys coached by John Smalle, Paul Fowler, Jason Barlow and Declan Tuffy. We train every Friday night 6.30to 8.00 on Astro. Started training in September and entered two squads in Oranmore Invitational Tournament, Village managedby John and Declan and Albion managed by Paul and Jason. Both squads played great football which enabled us to finish 4thin league. Both squads put 6 players forward to play in FAI league in Oranmore last month with huge victories over Athenry,Oranmore/Maree and Cregmore. This qualified them for quarter finals in Cappagh Park where they went down 2 – 0 to eventualwinners Cregmore . We also had friendly’s away to Athenry and Kiltullagh who will be playing return legs in September whenwe return. Many thanks to all the boys and parents who supported us throughout the year and we look forward to seeing youall again next season.

boys u11The under 11's have a squad of 30 players, managed by Willie O'Connor assisted by Declan O'Leary and Dave McFadden. We trained them on Wednesday evenings with an average turn out of 25 players. We had limited games during the 2011/2012season. We started training early September 2011 and the Galway FA super sevens competition eventually got started midFebruary 2012. I split the squad into three teams to try and give everyone as much playtime. The 'A' team was managed byWillie O'Connor assisted by Dave McFadden. We narrowly finished 3rd in Group 3 and later controversly knocked out in theShield. The 'B' team was managed by Declan O'Leary assisted by Nigel Garman. They won Group 4 and later knocked out inthe 1/4 of the Cup. The 'C' team was managed by Sean Moran assisted by Mick Gallagher. They finished second last in Group 5doing well to field six players in the early matches. The got through to the final of the Plate played at Deasy Park, Terrylandwhere they narrowly lost 3-2 to Colga 'A'. Thanks and well done to all, I wish the players well for the future. The U12 Craughwell Utd team have the smallest squad in the club with only 13 players who have a lot of belief in themselvesand expect to do well in the coming years. Next season we will be on the main pitch in the 11 a-sides. Many of the squadmembers have already played 11 a-side last season so this will be nothing new to them. They have played some great footballthis season in the Super Sevens. Hopefully we will have a few more players coming in to strengthen our squad and we arelooking forward to success in the future.

Special merit award

Anthony GilliganClub Secretary

Anthony has been an integral part of Craughwell United rightfrom our humble beginnings in 1991. He was a key member ofthe very first club team that entered Division 3 of the GalwayLeagues and got promoted in consecutive years up to the oldDivision 1. He quickly established a reputation for his no nonsensestyle of play and certainly most officials earned their refereeingfees in Craughwell matches.Anthony has held the position of club secretary for more yearsthan any of the current committee know and it is often recognisedthat the club would not have continued in the leaner yearswithout his drive and persistence. His workload as club secretaryhas grown in tandem with the size of our player base and often goes unnoticed. There is an incredibleamount of matches to be arranged for more than twenty teams every season. Certainly, without hisexperience and commitment at every monthly meeting, the club could not run as smoothly.I hope the committee speaks on behalf of the entire club in recognising Anthony’s efforts and we aredelighted to present him with a Special Merit Award this year.

Girls u14

The U14 girls started training back last October and are still in competitive mode with games still to play in the league and theCup. So far we have played over 12 matches between league matches and a few friendlies at the start of the season. We havewon most of our games so far with some great goals from Caoimhe Reidy and Grainne McDaid as well as Leanne Freaney andCiana Reidy helping the tally. This year our defence was helped massively with Katie Stephens joining Ashleen Nee and HannahRabbite and Ciara Kerse. The midfield was bolstered with the talents of Lisa Doran and Andrea Tobin with Grainne McDaid andMary Dunphy on the wings. Beth Anderson and Jean Waters also played their part and proved adaptable in different positions.

A vital quality to have on any squad. Someyounger talent that will definitely play a big partin next years U14 campaign also deserve amention. Erin Fitzpatrick, Emma Waters, Kim OHehir and Lauren Gilligan will be able to playU14 again next year and this season was a goodstarter for them playing 11 a side soccer. This yearalso saw Kate Gilligan starting in goal for U14sand U16s. It great to have a safe pair of handsand thankfully Kate will be able to play U14again next year. This year 3 players made theCounty team Caoimhe Reidy, Lisa Doran andGrainne McDaid. Grainne was selected to play inthe Gaynor Cup representing Galway. Andreawas also voted best player in her year inPresentation Secondary School!

Well done to all. Hope you enjoyed the seasonand it's not over yet! Bill Doran and Ray Power

Girls u16

This year we decided to enter an U16 squad in the Galway League for the first time. Although we only had nine U16 players westill put in some great performances with a mix of U14s and U16s making up our squad. Unfortunately we started the league witha few hiccups losing against Shiven Rovers 1-0 and Moyne Villa 3-2. From there on we played with style and confidence. Two newmembers of the squad with fantastic ability and speed are Sarah Molloy and Rosie Ferrick. Both players played midfield andenjoyed running at the opposition and scoring some fantastic goals. Gabrielle Tobin and Liz Power joined the U14 defence ofAshleen Nee, Hannah Rabbite to great effect. Grainne McDaid played on the wing for us running past defenders with ease. EllenFitzpatrick could play in any position and adapted perfectly be it in defence or in midfield. Emma Byrne played up front with

Caoimhe Reidy to great effect, the most memorablemoments being the fantastic 5-4 win against a Colgateam that had an Irish international and a Connachtplayer on their team.

Laura Gilligan definitely deserves a mention as the bestimproved U16 player. She will definitely figure more innext year's matches. Laoise Kenny also showed she hasa lot more to give in the future. Well done to Andrea,Lisa and Liz for playing midfield, defence or up frontdepending on the crisis at hand! We still have sometough matches ahead this year but looking to thefuture we will have a very strong U16 team next year.We will also have some fantastic talents that are tooold for U16s so if there is anyone out there who isinterested in coaching, there is definitely anopportunity to have an adult Ladies soccer team!

Get in before the talent goes elsewhere, Bill Doran.

This team is blessed with players with natural ability that love to play attacking football and wear their hearts on their sleeve. With only a squad of 14 players we rarely got to have full access to these players as there was nearly always players missingduring the season. Probably the smallest team in the Premier League we really struggled in the physical part of the gameagainst stronger and taller opposition.

We had four U12 players making the team so when these lads reach U16 level not only will they have the height but moreimportantly they will already have the footballers touch. Exciting times ahead for these lads.

Thanks for all the effort lads from Gerard Fahy John Smalle and Seamus Creaven

Our under-13 ‘B’ team had a tough season in 2011-2012, eventually finishing at the foot of the table. Playing 12 matches, wemanaged only one win in the league, away to Corrib Rangers. Rangers turned the tables on us, defeating us at Colemans onthe final day to switch places with us on the table.

We had some good performances in the Cup, knocking out Foundation and Salthill Devon in Drom, in what was our bestperformance of the season. At times ‘unavailability’ of players was a crippling factor, on some match days we had the bareminimum.

There were some really outstanding performers this season, who are progressing, but the platform for them must improve.Declan Burke.

The U14A team had a terrific season with our new coach Mark Flaherty giving us a tremendous boost with his fantastic coachingsessions and tactics on match days, and we could not have had a season without the constant support and training skills ofPaul Dolan who was there for every training session and weekday games. We won 6 matches in the season and were veryunlucky not to score more points with late goals against us in two games; even so we finished a strong second in the leagueand will be promoted to the premier division next year. Everyone improved significantly throughout the season, reallydeveloping both as players and as a team, each learning their respective positions and working brilliantly together. Althoughevery team member was an asset I have to single out two players to be nominated as Player of the year and Most Improved ofthe year, we asked the team to vote and they decided that Conor Dolan was our player of the year for his pivotal role in midfield, using both his strength and skill to secure the ball from the opposition and pass it on, he also scored a couple of cracking longrange goals. Our most improved player was Sean Garman who plays right back, Sean grew both physically and mentally thisseason developing his already good ball winning skills and adding great distribution and strength on the ball. A brilliant seasonfor all the team and really looking forward to next year. Nigel Garman U14 Manager

Craughwell U14B team finished the season second in their division. This team have shown huge improvements over the last

two seasons and exemplify all that is good in sport. They are a very committed bunch with a great team spirit forged on

miserable rainy winter nights in the mud of Colemans Field. Seasons stats Won 5 Drew 1 lost 3. All 3 defeats were by one goal

margins and the experience gained in going so close to winning a title will stand to them in the future. In addition I would like

to thank all the U13's that stepped up to help at various times as the made an invaluable contribution to the team and showed

great club spirit. Thank you to all the lads and it was a very enjoyable season from a managers point of view and the future is

very bright. Declan Craven.

This squad of players finished their season in Terryland in a Cup Final against league winners West Coast and were very unluckynot to come away with the cup after taking an early lead but got caught by a very strong team with a goal in each half, givingWest Coast the 2-1 win. With their first year playing together they really gelled together as a team especially with their semi-final shootout win against Cregmore. Hopefully we can keep this team together and challenge for a double next season withsome very exciting players that will also be ready to make the step up to the junior team. Thanks lads for a great season. Coaches Gerard Fahy and Brian Currans.

Juniors

The 2011/12 campaign was a season of two halves for our Junior team. Many early season games were lost by a single goalwhen a little better luck would have yielded a fairer reward for our efforts. Bart Healy had coached the squad from pre-seasonuntil the turn of the year but work commitments dictated that unfortunately he had to leave us. The team started Februarystaring relegation full in the face but winning five of our final six matches propelled us right up the table. The turning pointcame with an excellent win away to table toppers Mervue United B and the team never looked back from there. In fact, hadthe season been a few games longer, we would have been challenging for promotion. I hope we can hold most of the squadthat finished the season so well and look forward to the new campaign with enthusiasm. Aidan Collins Manager.
