A Message fromDoug Egly, General Manager

Dear Black Diamond Members:

Summer is in full swing and Matt has the golf courses in good condition. With the healthy turf conditions you will see green speeds increasing and overall course conditions at their best since Escalante has taken over. We are constantly improving playing conditions and we need help from the membership as well. Matt has moved the black stakes a bit closer to the greens to make access better for everyone. We will be asking the members with handicap flags to be much better on where you drive your carts. Some of you think the rules don’t apply to you; they do. Please stop driving up close to the greens and in-between bunkers and the greens. You all know who you are. If must be, we will take away your blue flag rights of use. Please help us help you.

Chris is getting settled in the dining room. He is continuing his training of staff and will be coming out with some various specials, theme nights and improved happy hours to help increase member participation. Emma Bradley will now be working on special events for the club replacing Lora Holiday. Emma has been in this business for years and is eager to help with your event needs.

Your advisory board met this past August and is finalizing the new club Rules and Regulations and we will be e-mailing them out to everyone in October. If you would like a hard copy, please stop by and see Peggy in the office. The Advisory Board is the member’s tool to communicate to management your comments, concerns or expectations that you have. Your board members again are Kent Rinker, Lisa Bishop, Dean Carhoun, Bob Savard, Ron Green, Jim Filby and Dr. Marie Salvio.

See you at the club.

Membership and Real Estate CornerWelcome to Jordan and Christopher Keen as our newest Members, they purchased a house on Pine Valley Loop. The Burnham Model is almost completed, the furniture will be going in during the first week of September and the final touches completed. The first soft opening for Realtors will be the 3rd week in September with the Grand Opening for Members sometime in the Fall. Please feel free to call the Welcome Center for a preview ahead of the grand opening.

A Message from Matt DiMaseDirector of Golf Course Maintenance

Attention Members: I hope everyone is enjoying the summer. At Black Diamond, August was hot to say the least and I am looking forward to September. We did manage to set several heat index records, and I am glad to be putting the “dog days of summer” behind us. As many of you know, the summer months are when Golf Course Maintenance crews conduct cultural practices that include aerifying, verticutting, weekly topdressing of the greens, and treatment for nematodes. All of these cultural practices are conducted during the summer because that

is when the Bermuda grass is actively growing. Also, everything we do during the summer is to set up the golf courses for the late fall and winter months. I want to thank members for understanding why we do what we do during this time of the year.

Switching gears to over-seed; Over-seed is right around the corner and all over-seed dates are posted on ForeTees, however, I will list them here. This schedule has been posted and while we try our best to limit course closures so members can enjoy the courses, the ultimate goal of the course closures are so we can have a successful and healthy stand of grass from November through May.

I am also happy to announce the addition of our new Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. His name is Chris Walden and he has over 20 years turf grass experience in South Carolina and Atlanta. With the addition of Chris, we have re-structured our Golf Course Maintenance crew and now have an Assistant

Superintendent on the Quarry Course, Ranch Course, and another Assistant on the Highlands. Each Assistant will focus on their corresponding courses and you will see efficiency, training, and our overall product improve.

Hello Black Diamond Members:

My first month with Black Diamond has gone by so quickly. I have enjoyed meeting so many of you over this time period. We are trying to make positive changes to your experiences here at the club.

We hope to communicate better with everyone via the cable channel 95 if you have Bright House Cable and the Black Diamond application for your phone or tablet. The Clubhouse portion of the app will have events, sign-up and reservation links for the events and dinner, a direct call to the Clubhouse button, and surveys. All feedback is appreciated so we can make this an optimal vehicle. Currently there is happy hour pricing available every day. There is now a “Happier Hour” on Wednesdays from 4-7 pm featuring a generous beer special, wine by the glass and a featured cocktail. Additionally, Chef has three small appetizers for $5 each. I look forward to seeing many of you there and meeting some new faces as well.

We held a bridal expo/open house on Sunday, August 17, 2014 that went very well. It included forty vendors, many brides to be and a live radio feed during the event. Emma and Christina did an excellent job of selling Black Diamond Ranch as THE place to have a wedding.

One of our next big events to include everyone is a car show on November 8, 2014 from 11am-3pm. The first “Black Diamond Ranch Invitational Car Show” is being co-chaired by Mr. Blackshear and Mr. Siano. If you have any questions or would like to participate, please email me at [email protected]. There will be a Black Diamond Ranch Members corral to show your car or you can enter with the other cars that will be judged. More to come…

Finally, any input towards events you would like to see happen here at your club or input towards maximizing your experience will be greatly appreciated.

See you at the Clubhouse

As many of our members have known, the handicap committee has been working very hard for the past year to get our new allocations out to the membership. From all of the information that we have received it looks like this hasn’t been performed in over 10 years and when it was performed it was done so from a different sets of tees then what is the most common tees played at the current time. Let’s start by saying that just because a handicap allocation comes out at #1, does not mean that it is the most difficult hole on the golf course. Let’s go with the following example: You have a 17 handicap playing against an 18 handicap, so there is 1 shot that is going to be awarded to

the higher handicap. On the hardest or most difficult hole on the golf course it is reason to believe that both of the players would receive a bogey on the hole and would end up tied. This is why that impression that the number one handicap hole should be the most difficult on the course is inaccurate. The objective of what the USGA is doing is that the #1 handicap hole should go to the ranking that has the biggest differential between a lower handicap player and a higher handicap player.

For a more detailed report on the procedures taken please feel free to visit... http://www.usga.org/Rule-Books/Handicap-System-Manual/Rule-17/.

In conclusion, the handicap committee had a meeting this past August and has reevaluated the most recent collecting of scores and has come up with the new allocations based on those recorded scores from our membership. We are looking at having these numbers out to the membership sometime in September and an updated scorecard in the month of October. If any members have any questions about this process please feel from to give me a call or stop by the Golf Shop.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

This is a reminder that our designated BDLGA Food Drive recipient for the months of September through December is Daystar Life Center! Please deposit your donations of non-perishable food items in the hamper located in the Ladies’ Lounge. Many needy Citrus County families can be served by your generosity!

BDLGA FOOD DRIVE

I know we are all looking forward to the “tapering off” of a VERY hot summer! The feedback we had from our summer resident BDLGA members indicated that playing in threesomes helped by speeding up play and shortening our time out on the course. Bryan Richard, our Black Diamond Director of Golf, was most receptive to our requests…as usual. Thank you Bryan!!! As we start to wind down our 2013-2014 BDLGA year we could use some comments and suggestions from you…positive as well as negative…to help in planning for the upcoming 2014-2015 season. These could address game selections, dining selections or, you know, anything and everything that you’d like to have considered by your BDLGA governing body of elected officers. And I believe that our wonderful organization of women will continue to grow as a result of this policy. I want you all to know I have tried to fairly address each request, suggestion and/or complaint I have received this year in order to reflect the wishes of the majority of our members!! My thanks for your participation!

Black Diamond Foundation Black Diamond Foundation Supports Nature Coast

Ministries’ Samaritan Free Dental Clinic

One of the local agencies that the Black Diamond Foundation has been working with is Nature Coast Ministries (NCM). For years, NCM has operated a thrift shop and food pantry in Citrus County. The thrift shop is open most days, and the food pantry is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 2pm. While operating for limited hours, the food pantry this year has been able to give out an average of 5,700 pounds of food each month, to an average of 243 families. Of the average of 674 people being helped on a monthly basis, 423 are children.

NCM came to the Foundation quite some time ago with the vision of operating a volunteer run dental clinic in Citrus County. Their idea was to provide basic dental work, which would include extractions and filling cavities, for residents in need throughout Citrus County. They provided us with statistics about the number of residents who ended up in the emergency rooms of local hospitals for the above mentioned work. Needless to say, we agreed that this would be a project that would fill a huge void in our county. NCM had arranged for donations of equipment from a major dental supply company. They needed funds for supplies, and they have an ongoing need for operating funds. The Foundation decided to get involved and help with the requested funds. The project has been slow to develop. Once a building was located and the equipment delivered, NCM started the process of enlisting volunteer dentists, hygienists, and dental assistants. The clinic opened in March of this year. In the short time since the opening, they have screened about 300 people and provided care to almost 200. The facility is open two days a week, and an additional two days a month. Seventeen dentists originally signed up, but a smaller number is actually working today. As the process grows, NCM expects to have more dental volunteers and, if so, they hope to be able to provide cleanings and more services. The demand is such, that the clinic is now booked until October. As the operation progresses, we expect that this clinic should be able to provide a wonderful and much needed service to residents of Citrus County. NCM is making a difference with this dental clinic, and we were thrilled to be in a position to assist the start up and help with funds for the ongoing operations.

roup Oak Ridge, Tennessee was created from scratch in

1942 as one of the Manhattan Projects secret cities housing people from small towns across America. More electricity was used than in New York City during the height of the war and Oak Ridge housed more than 75,000 people. Their jobs were shrouded in mystery until “Little Boy” was dropped over Hiroshima, Japan and the secret of the city was out. “The Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II” by Denise Kiernan will be discussed by the Black Diamond Reading and Discussion Group on Thursday, September 18th.
