In November 1665 the black plague struck Eyam and by November 1666, 260 out of 350 people died. The village tailor (George Viccars) received some cloth that was damp and invested with fleas, which were infected with the black plague. When he opened the parcel the fleas escaped and started to bite some of the villagers. George hung the cloth out to dry in the fire, he became sick very soon and died in one week

A Sad StoryThere is a nursery rhyme that relates to the Black Plague, you probably have heard of it or sang it when you where younger

A ring, a ring of roses- the skins were getting bruised and it was the sign of the black death

A pocket full of posies-posies were a type of flower that villagers thought it would keep the plague away

A-tishoo, a-tishoo –sneezing all day

We all fall down- the dying people in Eyam

William MompessonEyam saved cities from the Black Plague when it chose to isolate itself from the rest of the other villages and cities. The most important person in Eyam was the church leader William Mompesson. William Mompesson persuaded the villages not to leave Eyam because he was scared that the villagers would spread the plague to the other villages. Mompesson survived the plague and wrote this : Now, blessed be God, all our fears are over for none have died of the plague since the eleventh of October and the pest-houses have long been empty. Mompesson’s wife died in August 1665 from the Black Plague.
