Converting MarvinSketch or Chemdraw
Structures to Importable Graphics Files
A. Directly to JPG format (MarvinSketch only)
I. Draw the structures in MarvinSketch:
II. Goto File→Save As Image …
III. Select the correct ‘Save in:’ folder, type in the file name and ensure that the ‘Files of Type’
is set to ‘JPEG (*.jpg, *.jpeg)’.
IV. Select the desired image settings in the ‘Image Export Options’ dialogue box.
B. Directly to GIF format (Chemdraw only)
I. Draw the structures in Chemdraw:
II. Goto File→Save As …
III. Select the correct ‘Save in:’ folder, type in the file name and ensure that the ‘Save as type’
is set to ‘GIF Image (*.gif)’.
C. Indirectly to JPG format
(This method is more longwinded, but the JPG image quality is often better. It also allows you to
grab entire questions, including text and mathematical equations, from pre-existing Word
documents, PDF files etc...)
I. Draw the molecule in either Chemdra or MarvinSketch or alternatively open a prexisting
Word/PDF file. Adjust the view scale percentage to the size of image you require.
II. On the top right of the keyboard, press the Print Screen button – this will capture an image
of the entire desktop to the clipboard.
III. Open the default graphics package (e.g. Microsoft Photo Editor) and Edit→Paste as New
Image.
IV. Select/Highlight the part of the image you wish to copy.
V. Edit→Paste as New Image produces the following.
VI. Click File→Save As. Select the correct ‘Save in:’ folder, type in the file name and ensure
that the ‘Save as type’ is set to ‘JPEG File Interchange Format (*.jpg; *.jpeg)’.

Creating Assignments in Blackboard
I. Log in to Blackboard and select the appropriate module. Under Course Management, click
Tests, Surveys and Pools.
II. Under Test, Surveys and Pools, click on ‘Tests’.
III. In the Tests section, click on ‘Build Test’.
IV. Enter an appropriate name, description and instructions under ‘Test Information’.
V. Click on Question Settings and ensure the boxes for ‘feedback’ and ‘images/external links’
are ticked – this will enable you to incorporate the MarvinSketch/Chemdraw graphics. You
can also specify how many marks to give each question. N.B The Default Point Value is 10
marks
VI. Back in Test Canvas, hold the pointer over Create Question, and then select Fill in the
blank from the drop-down menu.
VII. You will then be presented with Create/Edit Fill-in-the-Blank Question page. Fill out each
part as appropriate e.g. write in the question into Question Text.
VIII. Under File, click on the Browse button and navigate to the folder containing your
MarvinSketch/Chemdraw image. Ensure that the Action option is set to Display image
within the page.
IX. Under External Link, insert the URL (i.e. web address) where you intend to host the
MarvinSketch applet or application. Under Link Name, insert an appropriate name for the
displayed link e.g. Open MarvinSketch.
X. Under Answers, paste in the appropriate SMILES string which correspond to the correct
structure.
XI. Under Incorrect Response Feedback, outline the basis of the solution. Under File, click on
the Browse button and navigate to the folder containing your MarvinSketch/Chemdraw
image for the solution. Ensure as before that the Action option is set to Display image
within the page.
XII. Once finished, click Submit. You will then be presented with a summary of the question in
the Test Canvas. At any point, you can return and edit the question.
XIII. You can start a new question by clicking on Create Question as outlined earlier.
Part 3
Deploying and Managing Assignments
I. To deploy the assignment, click Assignments, and then select Test from the Create
Assessment drop down menu.
II. Under Create Test, highlight the test you wish to add and click Submit.
III. This will bring you to the Test Options page. Students can only access the assignment once
the Make the Link Available option is set to Yes. Here you can also allow for multiple attempts,
forced completion in one attempt, timed completion etc. It is generally a good idea to set limits on
how long the assignment is displayed for.
IV. You can also modify how the assignment is presented e.g. one question at a time,
randomization etc. Click on Submit once you are satisfied with your settings.
IV. You will finally be returned to the Assignments page where you Assignment will be made
available to students.
IV. You can Edit the Test or Edit the Test Options as desired by using the drop down menu
adjacent to a particular assignment.
