I hope your 2018 is off to a great start. Activity at t h e C o m m u n i t y C e n t e r continues to increase and the team is working diligently to deliver great service and an abundance of appealing classes and activities for you. We have provided orientations to many first-time owners and tenants and I would like to take this opportunity to share a few things you can do to help us operate the Community Center.
W h e n u s i n g t h e C o m -munity Center and Tennis Pro Shop, please scan your card or allow us to check you in. For your guests, there are daily and weekly guest passes that can be purchased to provide use of the tennis, bocce and f i tness cen te r facilities. Providing a credit card on file will reduce the time it will take you to make purchases , such as event tickets, fitness classes and spa services.
With the increasing number of people using the facilities, we appreciate your patience as we strive to manage use of the ame-nities and services for residents from more than 1,910 homes. Your smiles are our reward.
Preparations are in full swing for the Annual Meeting and election of the Board of Direc-tors. Candidates for the Board need to submit their application by February 21, 2018. Meet the Candidates Night will be held on March 1, 2018.
Your help is needed to achieve a quorum at the March 22nd Annual Meeting. Proxies and ballots will be mailed to you in early March. We need at least 575 owners to send in their forms, or be in attendance, at the Annual Meeting. Your assis- tance with this important matter is greatly appreciated.
Your thoughts and suggestions for what the Foundation team can do to make Pelican Marsh the best it can be are welcomed and appreciated.
It is very easy, as we sit around and contemplate the beauty and relative calm of our surroundings, to forget that the privilege of living in the Marsh and enjoying all it has to offer does come with some responsibilities.
It is rapidly coming to that time of the year when you will be receiving proxies in the mail. These proxies will solicit your preferences for candidates running for the Board, as well as any o t h e r i t e m ( s ) t h e B o a r d
has de te rmined requ i res the vote of the residents. It has always been a strug-gle for us to obtain enough proxies from residents to achieve a quorum, which i s r e q u i r e d t o c o n d u c t the business of the commu-nity, at our Annual Meeting. I would like to suggest to you that it is our responsibility, as citizens of this community, to at the very least send in our proxies. Better yet, attend the Annual Meeting in person and express your opinions.
This year, three Board seats are up for election, two of which are those of currently se rv ing Board members , a n d o n e t o f i l l t h e s e a t
I will be vacating after serving six years.
Please, make sure your voice is heard and vote.

Southwest Florida is the place to be in February and, if tennis is your game, it doesn’t get much better than this. Febru-ary is a fantastic tennis month and Pelican Marsh is bustling with activity. Here’s a brief peek at some upcoming highlights:
Pelican Marsh Tennis Club Championships
“A great tradition” – that’s how I’d describe our Pelican Marsh Tennis Club Championships for 2018. This year, we are continuing with the popular new format we’ve used for the past three years. Instead of the “make your own match time” scheduling, this year we will again be holding the event in a weekend tournament format. Here is the schedule for the vari-ous divisions:
• The Singles events will take place the weekend of February 2-4. (Sign up by Jan 29.)
• The Mixed Doubles com-petition will be the weekend of February 16-18. (Sign up by Feb. 12.)
• The Men’s and Women’s Doubles matches will be the weekend of March 2-4. (Sign up by February 26.)
You can sign up for any/all of these events now and entries will remain open until four days before the event. We are using this format to alleviate some of the problems that pre-sented in past years. You will only have to play one match a day (unless you sign up in more than one division), but if you win, you will have to play the next day. Remember the Club Championships are for
everyone – we have divisions ranging from 2.5 all the way up to the 4.0 level so you will get a chance to compete against play-ers at your level. Sign up now and help us make this year’s event the biggest and best ever!
Sweetheart Mixed Doubles Mixer
Another great February event i s our Sweethear t Mixed Doubles Mixer on Wednesday, February 14. Tennis begins at 3:30 p.m. and will be mixed doubles in a round robin format . This event is for all levels and there will be three rounds of play. Our resi-dents love their mixed dou-bles here and we always fill up for this fun social mixer. You can sign up as a couple or as an individual.
Naples Pro League Every year, the Naples Pro League makes a stop at the Pelican Marsh courts and the tennis is spectacular! This year, mark the date for t h i s f an - f r i end ly, exc i t -ing, competitive tennis that features 32 top local ten-nis professionals – Friday, March 9! The event is free but most of our spectators help to subsidize it by participa- ting in a Classic American Cookout with hamburgers and
grilled chicken and all the fixins’ that gets rave reviews every year. Plan on joining us for this
special night, and see why the pros all know that the Pelican Marsh crowd is the biggest and best of all the stops on the schedule! Four matches begin at 4 p.m. and the second round begins at 5:30 p.m. This certainly ranks as one of our top “Can’t Miss” events!

A n u m -ber of resi-dents have asked me to discuss the practice of court cour-tesy and its great tradi-tion in the sport of tennis. Tennis and golf are unique in that these practices even extend into the professional ranks to this day. Naples resident George Wachtel, who played in our Naples-Ft Myers Tennis Challenge on several occasions, compiled a great list that he shares at his website (SeniorTennisand-Fitness.com). His list follows, as many of our newer players aren’t familiar with, and some of our established players may have forgotten, these practices.
• Returning loose balls – Don’t pick up a loose ball and send it back to the server in any fashion. Sometimes it is not even hit in the direction of the server and it
forces him to chase the ball down. The ball should be returned to the server courteously, prefer-ably on one bounce (and be sure they are looking and ready to receive them).
• Who brings the balls? – Bring a new can of balls to every match and be ready to open them when “it’s your turn.”
• Warmup Winners – Don’t hit winners during warmup.
• On the changeover – Pick up the balls on your side and leave them near the baseline. Some people feel you should bring them and hand them to your opponent; but I prefer the balls are left at the baseline and NOT brought in on the changeover. They frequently get left there when you walk back on the court.
• Announce the score – When the server gets ready, he should announce the point score every time.
• Don’t announce the score – The opponent(s) should give the server a chance to announce the
score and not do it themselves – especially when it is something like 15-40.
• Walking on the court – Even if it is “time,” players should allow the people on the court to finish their point and see that someone is waiting, rather than just walk-ing on the court and announcing, “Time’s up!”
• Conversing on court – If you must have a conversation on court, come up to the net and do it quietly. The people on adjoining (or distant!) courts shouldn’t have to listen to you.
• On court lessons – The dou-bles partner should not give an actual swing lesson in the mid-dle of a game, loudly and way beyond the time to continue play between points.
• Returning missed serves – If the serve is obviously out, the returner should not return it back over the net. Rather, they should let it go by them or, if the oppo-nent doesn’t object, bunt it back into the net.
• Returning practice serves – Official tennis etiquette is to not practice your return of serve while your opponent is hitting practice serves (unless you are done with your practice serves).
• Court clutter – Don’t leave your “stuff” all over the cross-over area. Leave room for your opponent (or next court neigh-bors) to put their stuff and/or sit on changeovers.
• Spinning for serve – Do this before taking the court for warm-ups; so that the server will be warming up on the side they will be serving from.
• Retrieving your ball – Do not walk onto someone else’s court to get your ball. Wait for them to finish their point and then politely ask for your ball back.
• Retrieving your ball – If one of your balls goes onto an empty next court or rolls off your court, it should only be retrieved during the game if the server is okay with the delay; otherwise, wait till he is done
serving (that’s why we have three balls to play with).
• Returning a neighbor’s ball – Be aware that they may be playing a point or are in between first and second serve; so don’t just knock the ball back onto their court and force a “play two” call.
• Clearing the ball – When the opposing player/team asks you to clear a ball before the point begins, do so and do not argue with him/them that it does not bother you. If the ball bothers your opponent(s), then clear it.
• Why I beat you – No matter how good you are (or think you are), do not volunteer to tell your opponent why you are beating them or why you just did. If they ask for advice, then feel free to pontificate.
• Why you beat me – Don’t make excuses after you lose – it diminishes your opponent’s vic-tory (and your reputation). Just congratulate them on a well-played match.

• Arrive on time – Get to the court early enough to do all you need to, so you are ready to play at the appointed time.
Especially if it is doubles, don’t assume that it’s okay for your partner to warm up two opponents ( they wil l
not get an adequate warmup that way).
• Leave on time – When your match is over and another group
of players has taken over your court, clear your things and walk away from the court ASAP. Do not dawdle and do not stand
there having a conversation with your opponent(s) while the new players are trying to warm up.
Top 10 reasons to play tennis!
By Pete Minarich, Director of Tennis
Why is tennis so popular, so addictive and so fun? Here’s a top 10 list that PlayTennis.com has compiled. If you’re a player, figure out which apply the most to you. If you’re not a player, figure out why not? And give us a call!
1) Tennis is the sport of a lifetime. There’s no other sport you can play throughout your life – from 10 and under until 90 and over – that gives you the physi-cal, mental, emotional and social benefits that tennis gives you.
2) Tennis can be anything you want it to be. Looking for com-petition, social play, team camara-derie, a good workout, time with family or friends, tournaments and national championships? Tennis has all that and more. The
sport can be anything you want or need it to be.
3) Tennis helps you live lon-ger. Scientists and doctors around the world point to tennis as one of the most healthful activities in which you can participate, deliv-ering overall physical, mental and emotional gains. It will add years to your life, and life to your years.
4) Tennis develops your mind. Tennis requires alertness, tactical thinking and problem solving. Evidence suggests it may gener-ate new connections between nerves, promoting a lifetime of continued development of the brain.
5) Tennis develops your body. The constant movement and action in tennis will burn
calories, build muscle, increase bone strength, improve flexibil-ity, fine-tune coordination and enhance overall health and fitness.
6) Tennis is a family sport. No matter the age, gender, ethnic-ity, ability level or fitness level, tennis is perfect for families to play together. Few sports can offer the opportunities for fami-lies that tennis can.
7 ) Tennis teaches l i f e lessons. Participants, particu-larly youngsters, develop a work ethic, learn sportsmanship, responsibility, manage mis-takes, enhance discipline, learn to compete, cope with pressure and adversity, develop healthy habits, learn teamwork and much more.
8) Tennis makes for a hap-pier life. Tennis engages your mind and body at the same time, unlike a typical workout at a gym. Because tennis players are more confident, healthier, less stressed and more socially interactive, they’re just plain happier.
9) Tennis is social. On court and off, you’re guaranteed to make friends through tennis. The sport encourages interaction, communication and lots of fun. Plus, it’s great for making busi-ness connections too.
10) Tennis is fun. At entry level of the game and at every age, from 10 and under tennis through super-senior leagues, players site “fun” as one of the main reasons to play tennis.
That’s a great list but there are actually two more that I thought of, believe it or not…
11) Tennis is international. Tennis is played in virtually every country in the world, and I’ve seen people become friends on the tennis court that couldn’t even speak the same language.
12) Tennis is relatively inexpensive. There are public courts and reasonable fees every-where and the equipment costs are minimal.
Now you know why you like this game so much and, if for some reason you’re not playing tennis now, stop by the Pro Shop and we’ll show you how we can fix that!

Over 40 million people reg-ularly use treadmills in the United States. Reasons range from losing weight to improv-ing cardiovascular fitness and supplementing cardio for competitive fitness.
What are the benefits of t readmil l walking versus outdoor walking? Are we wasting time as we pound away at the t readmil l , or are treadmills an effective way of increasing cardiovascu-lar fitness and losing weight?
Advantages of treadmill walking
In Florida, the main advan-tage of a treadmill is that it lets us avoid walking in the rain, intense heat and humidity. The risk of heat exhaustion is
greatly reduced. Also slippery or uneven surfaces in many circumstances interfere with normal walking form and pace, the treadmill offers a sound alternative. Treadmill walking provides a flat, cushioned sur-face that is easier on the ankle, knee and hip joints. A treadmill is also preferable for those with compromising orthopedic con-ditions, such as arthritis and joint pain, and for obese or seri-ously overweight people.
Treadmi l l walk ing le t s you watch TV (or surf the internet) to prevent boredom— especial ly for those long walks. With treadmills, you can vary workouts by con-trolling speed and elevation. You can also do uphill work-outs without any subsequent
downhill run and its risk of muscle damage.
Disadvantages of treadmill running
Despite these benefits, walking outdoors offers some advantages over indoor treadmill walking. Walking outdoors gets you out in the fresh air, provides changing scenery and comes with a variety of training routes. But how does treadmill walking compare with walking from a physiological standpoint? Walking results in more glute activation and, inter-estingly, it has been found that treadmill use results in a shorter stride length and more strides per minute. And for healthy individuals, uneven surfaces (to some extent) help with balance.

Walking on a treadmill helps Parkinson’s patients.
A recent study suggests that peop le wi th Park inson’s d i s ea se who a re expe r i -encing difficulty walking should engage in regular low-intensi ty practice on a treadmill.
Sixty-seven participants were split into three groups: high-intensity treadmill (faster pace, shorter duration); low- intensity treadmill (slower pace, longer duration); and stretching and resistance exer-cises that included leg presses, leg extensions and leg curls.
Various gait and fitness assess-ments were taken pre- and post-intervention. Overall, the low-intensity group experienced the greatest consistency in walking improvements, while the stretching and resistance training group showed the greatest improvements in
general fitness and ratings of Parkinson’s symptoms.
“These results have important implications for how we man-age Parkinson’s disease, since low-intensity exercise can be done by most people with Par-kinson’s,” stated Lisa M. Shul-man, MD, with the University of
Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore and a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurol-ogy, in a press release.
These findings were pre-sented at the 63rd Annual M e e t i n g o f t h e A m e r i -can Academy of Neurology in April.
According to the National Institute of Aging, there are four different types of exercises that, when performed regularly, may improve health in older adults. The areas of exercise include endurance, balance, stretching and strength training. By per-forming these types of exercises daily, one can help rebuild the muscle tissue loss that occurs with aging.
Endurance
Endurance exercise supports
the heart, lungs and circulatory system. Walking, running, swim-ming, bicycling and dancing are examples of endurance activities, which will increase your heart and breathing rates for an extended period of time.
Balance
Maintaining balance, one of the major factors for preventing falls, means having the center of mass with the base of support. In other words, your trunk is aligned

over your feet. One basic balance exercise is to lift your foot off the ground and move it across the body. By repeating this exercise, you train the brain and body to perform on an uneven surface.
Stretching
Flexib i l i ty or s t re tch ing exercises are a good way to improve range of motion. The benefits of stretching range from relief of every day aches, pains and muscle cramps to the ability to move continuously in everyday activities.
Strength Strength training is a method of improving muscular strength b y g r a d u a l l y i n c r e a s i n g the ability to resist force. There a re many ways to perform strength training exercises no matter what the level of fitness. Depending on your fitness goal, you can use free weights, machines, bands or your own body weight. Strength training has many benefits when performed fre-quently. It can be very pow-erful in reducing signs and

Have you had your tires rotated recently? Been to the dentist for a cleaning? There are some appointments you don’t think twice about mak-ing—they’re just a part of life. It’s time to think of massage as routine maintenance.
“But my body doesn’t hurt.” We automatically schedule routine maintenance for our cars, but all too often, we don’t give our bodies the same con-sideration. Fail to get your oil changed or your tires rotated, and you can count on some major problems down the road. Similarly, when you fail to pay attention to your body and pro-vide it with the care it deserves, you may very well run into health issues that could have been prevented.
Think of it this way: vehicle maintenance (like oil changes and tire rotations) isn’t some-thing you do only when there’s a problem. It’s something you do to prevent problems from happening in the first place. The same holds true with your body. Just because you don’t currently have an injury or an urgent reason to receive bodywork doesn’t mean you shouldn’t schedule regular ses-sions to prevent those problems from happening down the line. In addition, studies have shown that the most significant, lasting benefits of massage are found with repeated sessions, not just a one-time visit.
What types of problems can result from inattention to your body? Stress or repetitive motion related injuries are the first things that come to mind, but tight muscles and pain due to posture, as well as recurring migraines, are also potential problems. Conditions such as these, that start as a nuisance but accumulate into major problems over a long period of time, are much more difficult to fix after the fact than they are to prevent. And once the damage is done, it can often last for years. Don’t wait until it’s too late to give your body some TLC.
“But I don’t have the time.” Don’t think you have time to get a massage? Commit-ting to a healthy lifestyle that includes regular bodywork doesn’t mean you need to clear enough time for a 90-minute massage every week. Bodywork comes in many forms, some of which are tailored specifi-cally for busy individuals like you. It’s time to make time for
you! If you’re relatively healthy and injury-free, congratula-tions—now take steps to ensure you stay that way for years to come and schedule your next sessions today.
Take time for as little as a 30-minute massage to keep your “routine maintenance” up to date.
Make massage a part of your stress management plan! Our massage therapy profes-sionals enable your body and mind a chance to let go of the physical and emotional tensions of the day. It’s the chance to let the mind wan-der where it will, following the music or whatever paths it chooses, to explore the connec-tion of mind and body. Many of those who receive regular massage report that, over time, they become more aware of their bodies and their response to stress factors.

GOLF CLUBPreserving nature and the natural heritage of the game of golfBy Shea Brower, Director of Membership & Communications
Pelican Marsh Golf Club is proud to be a steward of the environment. In fact, since 2001, when it first became a
“Certified Audubon Coopera-tive Sanctuary” under Audu-bon International’s Audu-bon Cooperative Sanctuary
Program for Golf, the Club has increased its contribution to preservation and maintenance

Remember the Cheryl Crow song, “A Change Would do You Good” from 1995? (By the way, those are the only lyrics from that song I can remember!) Well, it’s actually true! And Henry David Thoreou can be quoted as saying, “All change is a miracle to contemplate;
but it is a miracle which is tak-ing place every instant.” Yet, I’ve heard it over and over again, “Older people don’t like change!” I do understand, but when I reflect on it, I real-ize that nobody likes change! When I was young, my father, a proud officer of the Air Force,
announced one evening that we were moving to another state. I still remember my reply to his announcement, “I’m not going!” Well, it probably comes as no surprise that I made that move with my family and I can honestly tell you, that change did me good!
Change is constant, and at Pelican Marsh we experience change every single day. New staff, new rules, new neighbors, new activities, new proce-dures, and soon we will even have new décor! Some of the changes you may like and some not, but embrace the change!
Here are some great reasons why change is good, according to tiny buddha:
1. Personal Growth. You grow and learn new things e v e r y t i m e s o m e t h i n g changes. It’s great to keep the mind active!
of Southwest Florida’s environ-ment, wildlife and watersheds.
The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf is an award-winning education program that certifies those golf courses that are dedicated to protecting the environment and preserving “the natural heritage of the game of golf.”
To achieve and maintain cer-tification, a course must meet minimum standards set forth
by Audubon International in six categories: Environmental Planning, Wildlife and Hab-itat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation and Water Quality Management. Recertification is required every three years.
According to Audubon Inter-national, the program helps people, “enhance the valu-able natural areas and wildlife
habitats that golf courses pro-vide, improve efficiency and minimize potentially harmful impacts of golf course oper-ations. The program serves an important environmental role worldwide.” Achieving certification demonstrates an organization’s leadership, com-mitment and high standards of environmental management. Members can take pride in knowing that Pelican Marsh
Golf Club provides significant wildlife habitats and is main-tained in an environmentally responsible manner. Certified courses, through their manage-ment program, provide green spaces for people and wild-life while working to conserve resources for future generations.
With close to 100 golf courses in Collier County (of which only 20 have attained Audubon cer-tification), it is easy to imagine
how environmental insensitiv-ity could impact the place we consider paradise.
Pelican Marsh Golf Club, its entire staff and members are proud to be stewards of the environment.
Please contact Shea Brower to learn more about this program, as well as our upcoming $4.5 million Clubhouse Renovation and related membership promo-tions at 597-0016.

The date for the season-end-ing party has changed to Fri-day, April 13! We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. The date was changed in order to not conflict with the Pelican Marsh Golf Club season-ending party. Please mark your calendars to attend the most popular party at Pelican Marsh! Tradition-ally held under the stars, it is always a fun evening of dining and dancing!
We’d love your input for the theme of the party! If you have a great idea, please send me an email! [email protected]
Come to the Health Fair at the Pelican Marsh Commu-nity Center on Tuesday, Feb-ruary 27 from 9 a.m. - noon. This Free event is f i l led with heal th and wellness professionals who are avail- able to give you advice and guidance! Many of the profes-sionals will provide free health screenings, such as hearing and eye screenings . Last year, a local podiatrist was avai lable to discuss foot problems and a nutritionist
was available for consultation. Professionals were there to discuss home health care and assisted living options. And the list goes on and on.
I t ’s not of ten advice is available for free, and so conveniently close to home. Best of all, there are always a l o t o f g i v e a w a y s a n d raffle prizes!

2. Improvements. Without change, there’d be no improve-ments.
3. Life values. Change often makes you reevaluate your life.
4. Strength. Not all changes lead you to pleasant periods of life, but overcoming the tough periods will make you stronger.
5. Opportunities. One never knows what change may bring. Changes will bring new choices for happiness and fulfillment.
6. New beginnings. Change can bring new beginnings and excitement; a new chapter in your life!
7. Routine. In the movie “Stranger Than Fict ion,” the main character does the exact same thing for years. His life is dull, uninteresting and extremely predictable. This is how your life might be without change!
So, while some changes might seem difficult and a b i t a n n o y i n g , w e l c o m e them into your l i fe! The new year is bringing a lot of new changes to Pelican Marsh. We hope you will embrace and love most, if not all , of them. Cheers!

Happy hour for St. Matthew’s HouseBy Lynn Albert, Director of Activities
Mark your calendars for March 19! We will be hav-ing happy hour at the Pelican Marsh Community Center with three extraordinary pianists (from Pelican Marsh!) providing
background music as we meet and greet our neighbors on this fun evening. This will also be the final chance to bid on auction and silent auction items. All proceeds from this evening will go to St.
Matthew’s Family Housing! Bring your own bottle and we will provide soda and appetizers!
We need volunteers Help us secure auction items!
If you own a business and would like to make a donation, if you own a vacation home and would like to make it available for a weekend as a donation, or if you’d like to
help acquire items from local businesses, we need your help! Please email Lynn at [email protected]. Thank you in advance!

St. Matthew’s fundraising event By Lynn Albert, Director of Activities
We need your treasures! The ones that no longer fit or have a place in your home! We’d love to have your gently used clothes of all types, books and artwork/decorations. All of our fundrais-ing activity this year will be for St. Matthew’s Family Housing. These donated items will be used in a community wide sale on March 8 and 9. This is one of the major fundraising events in Pelican Marsh.
This year, all the proceeds will be for St. Matthew’s Fam-ily Housing. St. Matthew’s has
a shortage of family housing. If a family of four should have to go to St. Matthew’s House, the family is often split up into three different housing units. Imagine your 12-year-old son separated from you in an already difficult situation. The stories are heartbreaking. But you can make a difference by donating, shopping, baking or volunteer-ing for this fundraising event!
Did I say baking? Visions of brownies are dancing in my head. Yes! We will also have a bake sale!
Items for donation can be dropped off at the tennis cen-ter or Community Center by March 1.
Baked i tems should be dropped off by noon on March 8.
To volunteer to work the event or bake, please send an email to Lynn at [email protected].
The special VIP preview night will be March 8. Mark your calendar now to be the first to shop ‘till you drop! Did I men-tion that you are welcome to bring a bottle of wine?!
