THE 2014 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES ANNUAL APPEAL

“TRUST IN THE FATHER’S CARE”

Bishop Conlon’s mailing asking for a pledge to the 2014 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal is in the hands of many of our parishioners. If you have received the mailing, please respond as soon as possible. This year, the theme of the Appeal is “Trust in the Father’s Care.” God’s blessings are abundant. Each of us should always be thankful that we can trust in the Father’s care. We can demonstrate our gratitude to God and help build the kingdom of God in our own parish and our own diocese by making a generous gift to the CMAA.

Sharing of Time, Talent, and Treasure

Note: The parish will receive donations, usually by mail, with the request for the donation to be applied to Sunday offerings. These donations would not be included in a specific Sunday offering collection total but are included in the total year-to-date collections.

Christian Service Happenings

On Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. the SS. Peter and Paul Respect Life Committee will show the documentary film 40 along with a special appearance by director/producer John Morales. The film showcases the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade and the March for Life. It features inspiring stories and deeply personal interviews of champions of the pro-life movement and documents significant changes that have occurred in the movement. Award-winning director/producer John Morales has had twenty years experience in radio and television including as a sports reporter and anchor for Fox Sports Net Chicago and as a contributor for ESPN and CBS Radio Sports. He was also the co-producer, writer and narrator of the award-winning movie, Champions of Faith: Baseball Edition. Come see his amazing film and hear him speak. The event is free and will be held at in the Ss. Peter and Paul Ministry Center Social Hall. Light refreshments will be served afterwards. We hope to see you there! Seating is limited. Contact Jane Fonner at 630.851.8433 or [email protected] with questions. To learn more about the film, please visit: www.the40film.com **A free-will offering will be collected for ongoing marketing expenses.

Mother’s Day Project Again this year, we are joining with “Companions Inc.” to provide packets of stationery and note cards for women in prison. This allows them to write to their children and other loved ones and thus strengthen the family bond. There will be a collection box by the church entrance and in the Ministry Center for the following supplies:

Pens, single cell with a cap (no click pens or pens that have any metal on them) Stationery (these do not need to be complete sets) Cards (blank, “thank you”, “thinking of you”) Gallon size Ziploc bags Postage stamps

We ask that you avoid cards or stationery… with images of Caucasian families on them. Many of the women whom we serve are of a diverse cultural background. which are yellowed or have yellowed envelopes. These packets are a gift. We want them to say “you are worthy of nice things.” which require extra postage or are square. which have notes about masses or novenas. which have anything pasted or glued on them.

Homemade or stamped cards are appreciated. Those cards say that you care enough to take some time making them.

(Use no stickers, glue, tape or paste on the cards or envelopes)

This collection will end on March 9, 2013!

On Friday, March 21st from 9am-12pm, we will gather at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 1313 N. Mill St., Naperville., to prepare the kits. Please join us if you can! (Please avoid parking in the blue-numbered spaces.) Questions? Please call Rose at 630-355-5023.

If you have experienced infertility, loss of a pregnancy, an infant or child death, you are not alone, many of our parish families have experienced the same and the Elizabeth Ministry would like to

help you through it. On the other hand, if you are expecting for the first time, or you are new parents who just had a baby or adopted a child, the Elizabeth Ministry would like to celebrate with you and offer our services to you. Through prayers, adoration hours, and sharing personal experiences, our ministers will try to bring you some peace and comfort no matter what your situation is. We are working on three badges as a troop, we visited the Morton Arboretum, Willowbrook Wildlife Preserve and Red Oak Center, we did several service projects including the Pro-Life crosses and we just completed our Daughter of the King Retreat. Over the next few months we are planning many outdoor activities such as biking, hiking and camping. The organization offers badge programs, service projects, girl leadership opportunities and outdoor experiences to its members. Home school, Public school and SS Peter and Paul students are welcome to join as well as girls from surrounding parishes. TRANSITIONAL HOUSING MINISTRY

New Mentors Needed

Our Transitional Housing Ministry needs more women and men to mentor the homeless families we serve. New mentor training will take place locally on Saturdays, Feb. 22 and March 8. After training, you will work with a team of experienced mentors and help guide one of our 4 homeless families with dependent children in their journey to self-sufficiency. For more information, please call Jack Flowers soon at 630-355-4886.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Today’s Gospel tells us that Jesus says “whoever fulfills and teaches these commands shall be great in the kingdom of God.” By making a donation to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you indeed put your faith into action as you fulfill the commands of Jesus. Each week we receive calls for help, ie. rent, mortgage, electric, gas, food, and medicine. Only because of the generosity of our parish members are we able to provide help. Please help us continue to serve the needy by placing a donation in a green envelope found at the side and rear entrances of the church or chapel. We can be contacted by calling 630-355-1081. On the weekend of April 5 and 6, we will have our spring clothing drive. Plastic bags will be handed out by our volunteers the weekend before the drive, March 29/30.

Prayer at Planned Parenthood The SS. Peter and Paul Pro-Life Group invites all members of the parish, friends, relatives, etc., to join them to pray in front of the Planned Parenthood abortion facility in Aurora. Our prayer is offered for the sake of our endangered preborn infants, and for the conversion of the staff and customers of that clinic. Here are a few ways you can join us: 1) Every Tuesday at 2PM a priest or deacon from SSPP prays the Rosary (no sign-up is necessary) 2) Every third Tuesday of the month at 10AM (next date on February 18th) the SSPP pro-life prayer group meets to pray the Rosary (no sign up is necessary). Contact Debbie Scanlon, Ss. Peter and Paul parish Coordinator for more information at 630-305-8724. 3) Volunteers are needed for one hour shifts between the hours of 8AM-5:00PM (5-6PM being the last hour) to fulfill our parish commitment to pray in front of the clinic on the third Tuesday of each month. Please sign up for one hour at the website www.fvfapp.org. Please contact our Prayer Captain Marty DeTamble with any questions at 630-369-4535. The Planned Parenthood facility is located at 3051 E. New York St., one block east of Eola Road. Ample parking is available in the lot of the Auto Zone store.

In our last article, we began an in-depth exploration of Catholic Relief Services’ (CRS’) Savings and Internal Lending Communities (SILC) model. First, we reviewed what it is. Then, we moved on to what it does, in particular, how it can improve water and sanitation conditions for SILC members and those around them. We will continue to learn about the SILC model by observing the ways in which it helps address challenges across several areas of development. Now, we will take a look at how SILC activities support people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) and those around them, and orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). CRS began its first HIV project in Uganda in 1989. Since then, CRS has been working diligently to support those affected by HIV and to prevent the spread of the virus. Recently, CRS celebrated the success of AIDS Relief, a consortium (of which CRS was the lead agency) that used grants from the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) to enable over 700,000 patients to access care and treatment since 2004. Such successes create new opportunities and new challenges. As CRS put it, “The increasing availability of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in many low resource settings has changed the natural history of HIV dramatically, creating a chronic condition from what was once a fatal disease.” This means that while many old challenges persist, the social and economic needs of PLHIV and those around them may be somewhat different than they were in the past. The SILC model is one way in which these needs are being met. This can be seen in the Kibara Mission Hospital HIV Project (Kibara Project) in northwestern Tanzania, on the shores of Lake Victoria. This project aimed to improve the quality of life for households in the area affected by HIV, and to reduce the spread of the virus. In 2002, when the project began, several challenges presented themselves, poverty being one of the foremost. When poverty is present, it often trumps concerns about the spread of HIV. Sex in exchange for food was common. Poor quality of housing and nutrition often made it even more difficult for PLHIV to stay healthy and strong. The first phase of the Kibara Project focused on health interventions. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) was not yet available, but voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) and home-based care (HBC) were facilitated and encouraged. What the project was missing was an effective tool to combat poverty. For instance, although the Kibara Project often stressed the importance of adequate nutrition to PLHIV, the specific foods recommended were often unaffordable. The second phase of the Kibara Project, begun in 2005, introduced the SILC model along with health interventions. SILC addressed the economic challenges faced by many PLHIV in the area. Many SILC members in the Kibara Project used their savings or took out loans to upgrade their liv-ing conditions, invest in land, start a business or expand an existing one. Some groups invested collectively. One group purchased fishing equip-ment and began an income-generating fishing activity to support the group’s social fund, which it used to assist PLHIV, the elderly, and orphans in their community. The SILC model is also able to address some social challenges associated with HIV/AIDS, such as stigma. In 2008, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stated in an op-ed piece in The Washington Times, “Stigma is a chief reason the AIDS epidemic continues to devastate socie-ties around the world.” If the topic of HIV/AIDS is not even discussable, it is impossible to dispel oppressive attitudes and beliefs, and to teach people how to avoid contracting the virus and care for those who have contracted it. SILC groups often serve as a platform for HIV/AIDS educa-tion and awareness. In the Kibara Project, most SILC groups incorporated the highly-successful “Stepping Stones” curriculum, which encourages dialogue and openness. In societies where being HIV-positive can be an isolating experience, SILC groups provide engagement and social cohe-sion. According to CRS, “several of the members in interviews indicated that in the event that they were to fall ill, they were confident that their fellow SILC members would take care of them, particularly through visits and social support.” This idea of a support network is a reminder that HIV/AIDS impacts entire communities, and is tightly intertwined OVC. According to CRS, “It is estimated that 15.2 million children globally under the age of 18 have lost at least one parent to AIDS.” These children are left to provide their own livelihoods, or to rely on the support of their communities or other family members, who are often already struggling. Many orphans and other vulnerable youth are forced to drop out of school or engage in dangerous behavior to support themselves. They are at increased risk of being traf-ficked for sex or labor. “For OVC and youth in general, programs that give support for livelihood development are critical to their survival,” ac-cording to CRS. SILC groups provide such support. With SILC, OVC can finance simple activities that support their livelihoods. For example, OVC can use SILC funds to finance kitchen gardens that generate incomes in addition to providing food for their households. Many OVC use SILC funds to purchase basic commodities (like food or fabric) for other income-generating activities. SILC funds can also finance housing, education, and health care for OVC. Furthermore, the presence of adult mentors and/or similarly-situated peers provides OVC with some of the psychosocial support they may lack in the absence of parents. With SILC, OVC can gain life skills, business knowledge, and financial management skills, all of which decrease the likelihood that they will fall victim to trafficking or engage in dangerous activities. On World Aids Day, December 1, 2013, Pope Francis prayed with crowds in St. Peter’s Square, saying, “We express our solidarity with the people affected by HIV/AIDS, especially children.” CRS has expressed this solidarity with action, bringing the SILC model to PLHIV and OVC, who are some of our world’s most vulnerable citizens. We look forward to examining the other areas of development with which SILC has positively en-gaged. Stay tuned to the bulletin, and in the meantime, visit crs.org, for more inspiration and information.

(Gaudium et Spes 41) We will host a Men’s Evening of Recollection Monday, February 24th, from 7:30 to 9:15 PM in the Church. The evening includes two meditations and time for quiet prayer followed by Benediction. We conclude with a practical talk and get together. Between May 13 and October 13, 1917, three children, Portuguese shepherds from Aljustrel, received apparitions of Our Lady at Cova da Iria, near Fatima, a city 110 miles north of Lisbon. At that time, Europe was involved in an extremely bloody war. Portugal itself was in political turmoil, having overthrown its monarchy in 1910; the government disbanded religious organizations soon after. At the first appearance, Mary asked the children to return to that spot on the thirteenth of each month for the next six months. She also asked them to learn to read and write and to pray the rosary “to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war.” They were to pray for sinners and for the conversion of Russia, which had recently overthrown Czar Nicholas II and was soon to fall under communism. Up to 90,000 people gathered for Mary’s final apparition on October 13, 1917. Less than two years later, Francisco died of influenza in his family home. He was buried in the parish cemetery and then re-buried in the Fatima basilica in 1952. Jacinta died of influenza in Lisbon, offering her suffering for the conversion of sinners, peace in the world and the Holy Father. She was re-buried in the Fatima basilica in 1951. Their cousin, Lucia dos Santos, became a Carmelite nun and was still living when Jacinta and Francisco were beatified in 2000. Sister Lucia died five years later. The shrine of Our Lady of Fatima is visited by up to 20 million people a year.

Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church rejoices with you as you prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. Because of the large number of celebrations of Holy Matrimony at Saints Peter & Paul and, in order to accommodate our parishioners, there are some guidelines which must be followed as you prepare for your celebration of Holy Matrimony.

The parish will set a date when contacted by only the bride or groom themselves. We are not able to set a Holy Matrimony date with parents, grandparents, relatives or friends unless the bride and groom are both serving in the military service abroad. All arrangements are also made only with the bride and groom. To schedule a Holy Matrimony date, call the Parish office during regular office hours, 630-355-1081 or stop by the Parish Office during regular office hours.

Either the bride or groom themselves, or either set of parents, must be registered parishioners for a minimum of three months before the parish

will check the calendar for a Holy Matrimony date. The parish will also permit any individual who has been confirmed in the parish or graduated from our parish school or graduated from North Central College to be married at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church following all other requirements and given the permission of their proper pastor.

The Diocese of Joliet requires a minimum preparation period of 6 months. This means that your Sacrament of Holy Matrimony cannot be sooner than six months from the time that the parish confirms your date with you. (If you phone the parish and your date is set on February 1st, the earliest that you can get married is August 1st.) To clarify, if you are newly registered here, there will be a 9 month period before your Sacrament of Holy Matrimony can take place.

Stipends for the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony scheduled after March 2, 2012 are as follows:

Registered active parishioners of one year or longer – $700.00 Inactive parishioners (non-contributing at the time the wedding is booked) – $1,000.00 New parishioners (registered less than one year at the time the wedding is booked) – $1,000.00

Note: Fees for parish stipend, parish organist and cantors are included in the above offering amounts; however fees for brass and violins are not included in this fee. For those couples who are not registered parishioners but whose parents are, the above guidelines apply to the relevant registered parishioners.

The stipend check should be made out Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, listing the Holy Matrimony date and time on the memo line. Please insure that your check is submitted to the parish office no later than one month after booking your Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. (Holy Matrimony stipends will be refunded for any cancellation if the parish is notified no later than one month prior to your originally scheduled Holy Matrimony date.)

Couples must be engaged prior to setting a Holy Matrimony date. A date will not be scheduled if Holy Matrimony is only a possibility.

Participation in a Pre-Cana workshop and two dates of “God’s Plan for a Joy-Filled Marriage” is required for those preparing for Holy Matrimony at Saints Peter & Paul. Classes are offered quarterly at Saints Peter & Paul. There is no fee for your participation at our Parish if you are being married here; however if your Holy Matrimony is at another Parish, the fee for these class is $125.00.

Participation in one instructional class on Natural Family Planning is required for those preparing for the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony at Saints Peter & Paul. Classes are offered once a month at Saints Peter & Paul. Please check the parish website for a list of upcoming sessions: http://www.sspeterandpaul.net/sacraments/wedding-planning). There is no fee for those preparing for Holy Matrimony at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church; however, a fee will apply for all others attending the class. If you attend at another location, you may need to pay a fee to the particular organization where you are attending the class.

Please be aware, that when a Catholic is marrying a non-Catholic, your Sacrament of Holy Matrimony will be celebrated with a ceremony that does not include the reception of Holy Communion. In these cases, one of our deacons may be assigned to prepare you for and to celebrate your Sacrament of Holy Matrimony.

The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony may not be scheduled if either party has been previously married without first speaking to one of the priests. The secretary will ask this question when taking the initial information.

The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony is scheduled here on Fridays at 4:00 PM and on Saturdays at noon and 2:30 PM. Rehearsals for Friday Holy Matrimony are at 6:30 PM on the Thursday before; rehearsals for Saturday noon Holy Matrimony are at 6:00 PM on the Friday before; and rehearsals for Saturday 2:30 PM Holy Matrimony are at 7:00 PM on the Friday before. Holy Matrimony and rehearsal times are not negotiable. Due to the large number of Masses (11 Masses) on Sundays, the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony is not celebrated on Sundays.
