FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY
A Service of Word & Sacrament
February 2, 2020 – 10:30 AM
“Blessed are those who mourn …”
ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH
85 East Brandt Blvd.
Landisville, PA
United in Christ,
we are called to Love and Serve.
GENERAL INFORMATION
WELCOME TO ZION! We are glad you have chosen to worship with us. The purpose
of this bulletin is to guide you through our worship service. It contains the four parts of
the Lutheran liturgy (The Gathering, The Word, The Meal, and The Sending) used within
the service. Should you have any questions concerning our service, please do not hesitate
to talk with the pastor. Welcome packets are available for all visitors. You are kindly
asked to complete a “Welcome Card” which can be found in the guest packet or in the pew
rack. Please place it in the offering plate.
ABOUT TODAY: In the Beatitudes, Jesus reminds his disciples that they cannot seek
happiness the way the world does. True joy is not found in selfish ambition, excuses, or
self-justification. An enviable state of blessedness comes to those who mourn over their
own sin. When we agree with God about how bad our sin is, repent of it, and seek his power
to walk away from it, Jesus promises comfort from the Holy Spirit. The kind of "mourning"
that leads to repentance is truly blessed. Those who learn to mourn over their own sin find
the heart of God. An intimate fellowship with God is the very foundation of true happiness.
RESTROOMS are located near each entrance to the worship area.
HEARING AID DEVICES are available on the table in the entrance hall.
CHILDREN are welcome as active participants in the worship service. There are activity
bags and books available at the “Children’s Corner” in the back of the worship area. There
is childcare available in the pre-school Sunday School room for children ages 5 and
younger if you chose not to keep your child in the worship service. Alternatively, the Parlor
may also be used as a “cry room” where the worship service can still be heard. Parents or
two people certified by Zion’s Safe Church Policy must always remain with a child. Any
child (2-12 years old) who leaves the worship area during the service, must be accompanied
by a parent.
During the Faith Formation hour, middle and high school youth are invited to the ZYM
room for a time of catching up and topical conversation.
USHERS are located near the back of the worship area to assist you with any other needs
or concerns you may have.
FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, there is hand sanitizer on the window sills and there are
tissue boxes in the pew racks. Please be sure to take your used tissues with you at the end
of the service and dispose of them in a trash can.

BLESSED BE YOUR NAME
1. Blessed be Your name

Where Your streams of abundance flow
Blessed be Your name.
2. Blessed be Your name
When I'm found in the desert place,
Though I walk through the wilderness
Blessed be Your name.
Chorus 1
Every blessing You pour out I’ll turn back to praise.
When the darkness closes in Lord, Still I will say,
“Blessed be the name of the Lord,
Blessed be Your name.
Blessed be the name of the Lord,
Blessed be Your glorious name.”
3. Blessed be Your name
When the sun's shining down on me,
When the world's all as it should be
Blessed be Your name.

On the road marked with suffering,
Though there's pain in the offering
Blessed be Your name.

† THE WORD †
God speaks to us in Scriptures read, sung, and preached.
FIRST READING Micah 6:1-8
A: A reading from Micah.
Hear what the LORD says: Rise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the
hills hear your voice. Hear, you mountains, the controversy of the LORD, and you
enduring foundations of the earth; for the LORD has a controversy with his people,
and he will contend with Israel. “O my people, what have I done to you? In what
have I wearied you? Answer me! For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and
redeemed you from the house of slavery; and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and
Miriam. O my people, remember now what King Balak of Moab devised, what
Balaam son of Beor answered him, and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal, that
you may know the saving acts of the LORD.”
“With what shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before God on high?
Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will
the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil?
Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of
my soul?” He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require
of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
A: The Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
SECOND READING 1 Corinthians 1:18-31
A: A reading from 1 Corinthians.
For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us
who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the
wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” Where is
the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not
God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the
world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of
our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks
desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and
foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks,
Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser
than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human
strength. Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise
by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But
God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak
in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world,
things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast
in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became
for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in
order that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
A: The Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
Please stand if you are able.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
HALLE, HALLE, HALLELUJAH ELW 172
(Sing twice thru)
Halle, Halle, Hallelujah.
Halle, Halle, Hallelujah.
Halle, Halle, Hallelujah.
Hallelujah. Hallelujah.
GOSPEL READING Matthew 5:1-12
P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 5th chapter.
C: Glory to you, O Lord.
P: When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his
disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are
those who mourn, for they will be comforted. “Blessed are the meek, for they will
inherit the earth. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for
they will be filled. “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. “Blessed
are the pure in heart, for they will see God. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they
will be called children of God. “Blessed are those who are persecuted for
righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when
people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely
on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the
same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
P: The Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to you, O Christ.
Please be seated.

Blest are they who
Hunger and thirst;
They shall have their fill.

Rejoice and be glad!
Yours is the kingdom of God!

Yours is the kingdom of God!
APOSTLES’ CREED
P: As children of God, let us profess our faith.
C: I believe in God, the Father almighty creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the
Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. On the third day he
rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the
Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
Amen.

have. By your Holy Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one
in ministry to all the world; through Jesus Christ our Savior.
C: Amen.
GREAT THANKSGIVING
The Dialogue
P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Lift up your hearts.
C: We lift them to the Lord.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given
for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the
forgiveness of sin. Do this in remembrance of me.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
P: We pray together.
C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and
forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and
the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
INVITATION TO COMMUNION
P: Brothers and sisters in Christ: Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of
the world! Come to the table of mercy and joy.
C: Thanks be to God.
Please be seated.

Holy Communion. Those who do not, or choose not, to participate in the sacrament may

wine, there is white grape juice in the outer circle of every tray. Gluten-free wafers are
available upon request.
When the elements are distributed, the words “the body of Christ, given for you” and “the
blood of Christ, shed for you” will be spoken. Each person may respond, “Amen.”
Note: Children who do not commune are encouraged to come forward for a blessing.
COMMUNION SONGS
JESU, JESU. FILL US WITH YOUR LOVE ELW 708
Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love,
Show us how to serve
The neighbors we have from you.
Kneels at the feet of his friends,
Silently washes their feet,
Master who acts as a slave
To them.
Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love,
Show us how to serve
The neighbors we have from you.
Neighbors are wealthy and poor,
Varied in color and race,
Neighbors are nearby and far away.
Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love,
Show us how to serve
The neighbors we have from you.
These are the ones we will serve,
These are the ones we will love;
All these are neighbors to us and you.
Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love,
Show us how to serve
The neighbors we have from you.
Kneel at the feet of our friends,
Silently washing their feet:
This is the way we will live with you.
Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love,
Show us how to serve
The neighbors we have from you.
