DEFINITION OF AN ACTIVE PARISHIONER

An active parishioner family is one who has been duly registered in the parish for at

least 3 months, participates in worship through attendance at weekend Masses,

evidenced by weekly envelopes in the offertory, and actively involved in a parish or

school ministry, and participates in Grateful Sacrificial Giving. Blessed Sacrament

Parish asks that at weekend Masses to please turn in envelopes weekly, even if

empty.

If you give online, please turn in your empty envelopes weekly at Mass and check "I

give online." If you contribute periodically through the collection, please remember on

other weeks to put in empty envelopes and mark "I attended Mass."

An active parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church may be entitled to a

REDUCED TUITION RATE AT BLESSED SACRAMENT CATHOLIC SCHOOL

AND/OR BISHOP ENGLAND HIGH SCHOOL.

Due to Covid-19 – We understand the situation of Mass attendance and the

dispensation allowed at this time. If you have health concerns with attending Mass

at this time, you may turn in your envelopes thru the mail to the parish or use

online giving. Once the dispensation is over and we are all able to celebrate

weekend Mass openly, envelopes must be placed weekly in the collection basket,

even if empty, at any of the weekend Masses.

FAMILY LIFE, a ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ International and a

leader in marriage & family ministry, will be hosting the WEEKEND TO

REMEMBER MARRIAGE CONFERENCE December 11-13 at the Wild Dunes

Resort, Charleston. They are hopefully optimistic that they can host

retreats this Fall. The teaching content will be about the "4 Act Play of Marriage" - The

Dream, The Fall, The Hope, The Mission. For more information, call 843.640.1787

(John & Ann McDermott, Missionaries to Marriages & Families)

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the CAROLINA

CATHOLIC PROFESSIONALS FOOD DRIVE. To date, they have given out

over 25,000 lbs. of food to neighbors in need. At this time, we are in

need of food to fill to-go bag lunches at our Neighborhood House

location and stock our food pantries. The following is a list of our most-

needed items. These donations can be dropped off at Blessed Sacrament

Church (front porch). Items: jelly/jam, peanut butter, canned fruits,

canned meats, crackers, snacks, cereal, shelf-stable milk, individually

packaged snack packs, rice, cases of bottled water, sandwich bread, juice (64oz

bottles), and canned vegetables. We thank you for your generosity!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE WHO WERE RECENTLY BAPTIZED:

Jackson Thomas Brunke, son of Ryan Wesley Brunke and Chelsey Lauren

Brunke.

THE EUCHARIST: LIFE BLOOD OF THE CHRISTIAN

The Last Supper: “Take this ….. do this in remembrance of me.” Do what? Do what is necessary for you

to become what I have begun to make in you by this action, namely, members of my body to be my

presence in the world.

It is through baptism that the believer becomes incorporated into the Body of Christ so as to become a

sign and witness to God’s reign in human history. It is through the Eucharist that the Last Supper is

made present again and those who break bread and drink of the cup become renewed as a communion

with Christ and one another.

Let us now explore some of the characteristics of our culture which make it difficult for us to do and be

what the Lord intended. Cultural diversity in the United States: the Church is part of this diversity and

the diversity is part of the Church. Herein lies the delicate balance. Are we so absorbed in the American

mentality that we have lost our distinctive Christian identity and the power to transform the culture???

We speak of our ‘pluralistic’ culture. It is the maintenance of diverse sub-cultures in harmony and

openness to each other. Is it possible for the Church to be a force of cultural transformation? To say NO

is to give up on God; to say YES is to hold fast to the Person of Christ who himself lived the challenges of

transforming the culture of his day.

Some of His challenges:

1. PRIVATISM: “all that matters is what I believe and do.” So all truth becomes relative; religion

becomes private. In contrast, the Christian faith is of its essence … communal.

2. INDIVIDUALISM: We are blinded to the fact that we need each other. We are not isolated

islands in the sea of humanity. This shows itself in private homes, separate rooms with doors, personal

transportation, self-service stores, all of which diminish our common life. And there are more serious

implications: emotional detachment from our social and physical environment, increased competition

between races and sexes, indifference to the poor, aggression in world politics and ‘me and only me’

matters. The Christian faith, on the other hand, is founded on a communal person … the ‘Body of Christ’.

3. SECULARISM: The Christian understanding of the world includes two dimensions: the SACRED

and the SECULAR. The former is based on faith and the non-material world; the latter is based on

definite knowledge and the material world. It seems that, over the years, the sacred is being more and

more ignored, and the secular is more and more emphasized.

Without sounding too critical: our culture is so materialistic. There is a thirst to possess things; we are

dominated by technology and mechanical devices. Ours is a world of technique, control and prediction;

a world of means rather than ends. Our knowledge is trustworthy only if it is objective, analytical and

experimental.

THE CHRISTIAN FAITH STANDS IN CONTRAST TO ALL OF THE ABOVE.

Page 7: Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church · 19/7/2020  · Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church (Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston, S.C.) 5 Saint Teresa Drive, Charleston, S.C. 29407-7297

How then can we transform the culture? How can we be effective? How can we change the

consciousness of society from a narrow horizon of self-interest to a consciousness that is more

community-oriented?

We have, as Catholics, a resource that is at the center of all we do … the EUCHARIST. If we let the Lord

nourish us, all our other suppers would feel the impression that His supper leaves on us. If the Eucharist

is allowed to be truly Eucharist, the Church would be transforming the culture.

“Do this in remembrance of me,” said Jesus at the Last Supper. Do what? Do what is necessary for you

to become what I have begun to make in you by this action, namely, members of my body to be my

presence in the world. The teachings of Jesus are closely related to the heart of Jesus – the innermost

aspirations of one who is convinced of the mission that He has embarked upon in obedience to the will

of his heavenly Father … the salvation of the world. Ominous task. Possible only when one lives in the

presence of the Father. Jesus did. Can we? Yes, we can. Isn’t this the promise He made? Live in Me as I

live in the Father; the Father and I are one. This is personal. This is about the very PERSON of Jesus

Christ. This is a close relationship. “Eat my Body”, “Drink my Blood”. This is true Communion with the

Person of Jesus Christ. This living with Jesus does not happen all at once. It could. Generally, it is a

matter of small steps that grow in size with the passing of years. Our very closeness to the Person of

Jesus is the foundation of understanding His teachings, His Gospel. And this process is “continuous and

cumulative.” It is a life-process. It never stops. It is not just a matter of ‘knowing’ what He said. It is

‘doing’ what He said. Like Father, like Son. It comes with an attachment to His very Person, His Heart,

His will to live the life of His Father in answer to the mission of saving the world. Folks have actually done

this when we look down the centuries of time. How many individuals (we call them saints and martyrs)

have lived so close to the Person of Jesus that their very lives meant nothing apart from Him. And so

they sacrificed their all for Him. We too can do this.

My friends: just a few thoughts on a relationship that takes a lifetime to achieve … to become one with

Jesus Christ.

With love,

Fr. Derrick

- Mt 13, 41-43
