A Spirituality of the Ascension!
The Ascension throws some important light on the mystery of
love and in�macy. What’s the Ascension?!
It’s an event inside of the life of Jesus and the early church, a
feast�day for Chris�ans, a theology, and a spirituality, all
woven together into one amorphous bundle of mystery that
we too seldom try to unpackage and sort out. What does the
Ascension mean?!
Among other things, that the mystery of how we touch each
other’s lives is strangely paradoxical in that the wondrous life�
giving power of arriving, touching another’s life, speaking
words that nurture, doing ac�ons that build up, and giving life
for another, depends also upon eventually leaving, being
silent, absorbing rather than ac�vely doing, and giving our
goodbye and death just as we once gave our presence and
our life. Presence depends too upon absence and there’s a
blessing we can only give when we go away.!
That’s why Jesus, when bidding farewell to his friends before
his ascension, spoke these words: “It’s be(er for you that I go
away.” “You will be sad now, but your sadness will turn to
joy.” “Don’t cling to me, go instead to Galilee and I will meet
you there.”!
How might we understand these words? How is it be(er that
someone we love goes away? How can the sadness of a
goodbye, of a painful leaving, turn to joy?!
This is something that’s hard to explain, though we
experience it daily in our lives. Allow me an example: When I
was 22, in the space of four months, my father and mother
died, both s�ll young. For myself and my siblings, the pain of
their deaths was searing. Ini�ally, as with every major loss,
what we felt was pain, severance, coldness, helplessness, a
new vulnerability, the loss of a vital life�connec�on, and, the
brutality and finality of something for which there is no
prepara�on. There’s nothing warm, ini�ally, in any loss,
death, or painful goodbye.!
Time is a great healer (though there’s a lot more to this than
simply what washes clean or is anaesthe�zed by the passage
of �me). A4er a while�for me this took several years�I
didn’t feel a coldness any more. My parents’ deaths were no
longer a painful thing. Instead their absence turned into a
warm presence, the heaviness gave way to a certain lightness
of soul inside me, their seeming incapacity to speak to me
now turned into a surprising new way of having their steady,
constant word in my life, and the blessing that they were
never able to fully give me while they were alive began to
seep ever more deeply and irrevocably into the very core of
my person. The same was true for my siblings. Our sadness
turned to joy and we began to find our parents again, in a
deeper way, in Galilee, namely, in those places where their
spirits had flourished while they were alive. They had
ascended and we were the be(er for it.!

La Espiritualidad de la Ascensión!
La Ascensión brinda una luz importante sobre el misterio del
amor y la in�midad. ¿Qué es la Ascensión?!
Es un evento dentro de la vida de Jesús y de la iglesia
primi�va, un día de fiesta para los cris�anos, una teología y
una espiritualidad, todo entrelazado en un conjunto de
misterio que muy pocas veces tratamos de desenvolver y
resolver. ¿Qué significa la Ascensión?!
Entre otras cosas, el misterio de cómo nos tocamos la vida es
extrañamente paradójico porque el maravilloso poder de la
vida de llegar, tocar la vida de otra persona, hablar palabras
que nutren, hacer acciones que se desarrollan y dar vida a otra
persona, depende también al salir, estar en silencio, absorber
en lugar de hacer cosas ac�vamente, y dar nuestro adiós y la
muerte tal como una vez dijimos nuestra presencia y nuestra
vida. La presencia también depende de la ausencia y hay una
bendición que solo podemos dar cuando nos vamos.!
Es por eso que Jesús, al despedirse de sus amigos antes de su
ascensión, pronunció estas palabras: "Es mejor para ustedes
que yo me vaya." "ahora se sienten �stes, pero su tristeza se
conver�rá en gozo." "No te aferren a mí, vallan a Galilea y los
encontraré allí.”!
¿Cómo podríamos entender estas palabras? ¿Cómo es mejor
que alguien que amamos se vaya? ¿Cómo puede la tristeza de
un adiós, de una par�da dolorosa, conver�rse en alegría?!
Esto es algo que es diFcil de explicar, aunque lo
experimentamos a diario en nuestras vidas. Permítanme dar
un ejemplo: cuando tenía 22 años, en el espacio de cuatro
meses, mi padre y mi madre murieron, ambos todavía
jóvenes. Para mí y mis hermanos, el dolor de sus muertes fue
muy doloroso. Primeramente, como con cada pérdida
importante, lo que sen�mos era dolor, disolución, frialdad,
impotencia, una nueva vulnerabilidad, la pérdida de una
conexión de vida importante y finalmente algo por lo cual no
hay preparación. No hay nada caluroso, en cualquier pérdida,
muerte o de un doloroso adiós.!
El �empo es un gran sanador (aunque hay mucho más que
simplemente lo que se limpia o se anestesia con el paso del
�empo). Después de mucho �empo, para mí esto tomó varios
años, ya no senGa frialdad. La muerte de mis padres ya no era
tan dolorosa. En cambio su ausencia se convir�ó en una cálida
presencia, la pesadez dio paso a una cierta ligereza de alma
dentro de mí, su aparente incapacidad para hablarme ahora se
convir�ó en una nueva y sorprendente forma de tener su
palabra constante y constante en mi vida, y la bendición de la
cual nunca pudieron darme por completo mientras estaban
vivos comenzó a filtrarse cada vez más profunda e
irrevocablemente en el centro mismo de mi persona. Lo
mismo fue para mis hermanos. Nuestra tristeza se convir�ó en
alegría y comenzamos a encontrar a nuestros padres de
nuevo, de una manera más profunda, en Galilea, es decir, en
aquellos lugares donde sus espíritus habían florecido mientras
ellos vivían. Ellos habían ascendido y nosotros estábamos

Troop 9 Boy Scouts hiked over 6 miles
during a recent Campout & Hike at Cedar
Rock Park. The Scouts learned the proper
method for backpacking and cooking meals
while on the hiking trail. They saw many
forms of Animal Life and experienced
spending the weekend outdoors. While at
Cedar Rock Park, the Troop toured the 1830
historical farm. The Scouts and Leaders all
had a great �me.

Troop 9 is offering the opportunity for
Blessed Sacrament Parishioners to "Send a
Scout to Camp". The Cost of Summer Camp
is $300. Your sponsorship will help send a
Scout to Summer Camp 2018. For a Full $300
Dona�on, the Scout you Sponsor will send
you 2 le(ers from Camp, as well as photo(s).

La Tropa 9 de los Boy Scouts recorrió más de 6
millas durante un reciente Campout & Hike en
Cedar Rock Park. Los Scouts aprendieron el método

de vida animal y experimentaron pasar el fin de
semana al aire libre. Mientras estaba en Cedar Rock
