Knights of Columbus Blessed Sacrament Clermont, Florida | NOVEMBER 2013 NEWSLETTER 1
Brothers,
I start this month with the utmost
appreciation for my Brothers and
sisters of the Knight’s family. So many
of you answered the call and
responded to the needs of individual
Brothers facing tragedies, the Council in it’s endeavors, and our
Parish. Unfortunately, we also lost Brother Jim Zagota and the spouse
of Brother Mike Scotto, Nancy. Please keep the families in your
prayers.
Let me start by acknowledging, with sincere gratitude, Brother
Robert Berardi for stepping in to take over the newsletter. It is greatly
appreciated.
Once again, Brother Lucca and his band of “Merry Men” (and
Squires and Ladies) and the Brothers who jumped in at the event,
helped make the Pasta dinner another memorable evening. I
understand nearly 140 meals were served and a good time was had by
all. Maybe I should leave more often as our Deputy Grand Knight,
Brother Regiacorte and the dedicated crew did a marvelous job.
Further, I couldn’t begin to thank each and every brother and sister
by name who stood up and gave so much of themselves to the Fall
Festival. More than seventy members of the Council, Ladies
Auxiliary, and Squires, from the ladies and Knights who held Bingo
together, to the tremendous job done on the baskets, the meatball
booth, especially the beverage booths, the Squires and their
Counselors handling trash duty, the planning, entertainment, the set
up and breakdown -- there simply is not enough space to thank each
and every one of you by name for your generosity and dedication. I
am humbled and blessed to be associated with this Group.
All I can say is Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Remember this month we have a First Degree prior to the meeting.
When the exemplification starts, the doors will be closed. Entrance
will be through the southern most door. Please don’t rattle the doors
in an attempt to enter.
Our Social this month will be our 11th Anniversary Dinner,
November 23rd at Sanctuary Ridge. See Mike Breza or myself for
tickets.
Also, those who have signed up to assist Special Olympics Bowling,
November 15, contact SK Joe Nowicki, 352 630 4253 for details. It
was moved this year from Kissimmee to East Orlando, Alafaya Trail.
Travel time should be just a bit more.
There is also a Fourth Degree Exemplification November 30. See
Faithful Navigator, SK Pete Capece for details.
Congratulation to our newest Brothers to achieve full knighthood;
Forst Brown, Joe O’Reagan, Bob Richey, Victor Rivera, and
Matthew Sulsenti.
Next Month, we look forward to our Annual Children’s Christmas
party, December 14th and our Adult party, December 19th. Brothers
Regiacorte and Costello will have information on those events
shortly.
I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity, on behalf of the
Council, to acknowledge the efforts of the retention committee,
especially PGK Pete Capece through whose personal efforts a half
dozen or more brothers were saved. Thank you, Pete and all the
committee.
On the other side, Brother Steve Cruz and the Recruitment
Committee is also making gains. We have at least three candidates
for our First Degree and several former Knights who have broken
service will be returning.
Brothers, in order for the Order and our Council to fulfill the
obligation we have taken upon ourselves to build the Kingdom of
God we must continue to recruit and retain Catholic Men of character
and commitment.
Lastly, the shelving in our closet in the Ministry Building collapsed.
Is there a carpenter among you who can build us shelving that is
sturdy enough to hold the weight of brochures, documents, records,
supplies and equipment? Please contact me at 3522433292 or
4074352325 or [email protected] . See you November 7th.

“Why do we join the Knights of Columbus?”
Brother Knights,
On page 1 of the Knights of Columbus pamphlet These men
they call Knights, you can read these words: “Welcome
Brother Knight! As a member of the Knights of Columbus,
you have joined nearly 2 million Catholic men and their
families throughout the world, united in service with our
Catholic Church, our communities, parishes, schools,
neighborhoods, and the many in need, on your street and
across the world. … If you’ve ever wondered what one man
can do, you’ll find the answer in the Knights of Columbus.
United as Brothers, we make the world a better place; one act
of charity at a time.”
On the bottom of the Form 100 that you completed and signed
when you first joined the Knights, there is a space for you to
provide answers to this question: “In your opinion, what can
you do or contribute to assist in the successful operation of
this Council?” This is how some of us answered that question:
• “Help out where needed”
• “Accomplishing deeds for others”
• “Give back to the Church”
• “Serve my community”
• “Work with other good people”
• “Help whenever I am available”
• “Anything I can do”
• “Help and pray for the sick”
• “Visit the poor and provide food”
• “Donate time to charitable causes”
So please remember why you joined the Knights; what we do;
and the huge need for us to continue to administer our
charitable services. The Council needs you; Blessed
Sacrament Church needs you; and our community needs our
united services. Please continue your membership in this truly
wonderful organization!
Remember, if you have a change of address, a new phone
number, or a new e-mail address, please send an e-mail to me;
[email protected] or write a note and hand it to me at any
Council meeting or event. Please print clearly. Thank you!
Blessings and Brotherhood regards,

I hope this finds all my Brother Knights and their Families
doing well and in good health. One of the reasons I joined the
Knights was to be a part of a brotherhood with a common
belief in Faith, Family and charity. I ask you all to help
support each other, not just in Knights activities but as a
family even outside of Knight Activities. If you notice a
fellow Knight isn’t around, give him and/or his family a call.
See if there is anything that you, or the Council as a whole,
can do. If help is needed, whether it is prayer or other
assistance, we are a large Council with much strength so we
should always be able to step up and help a fellow Brother
and/or his family, in one way or another. I also want to
challenge all Knights that have sponsored a fellow knight to
join the council, to reach out to them between now and the
next Council meeting. See how they are doing, maybe meet
up with them, a call or a meeting over coffee, whether it is five
minutes or five hours it is important. This should be a
constant effort, all year round, from each and every Brother,
not just a select few.
I, along with the Trustees, The Grand Knight, and the
admission Director have run into some challenges. Although
dues helps the council run, the strength, the faith and what we
stand for is even more important. I am seeing first hand that
we have lost contact with fellow Brothers and their families,
both present and past. Help us to rectify this by reaching out
and taking that extra step. Let’s show your fellow Brothers
that you’ve got their back.
I would also like to remind you all that we have a lot of events
coming up. Let’s all step up and give a little of our time to
help these events run seamlessly. Let’s show others the
strength and true Brotherhood of the Knights of Columbus
Council 13240. I am sure all the Brothers that have stepped up
to organize and run these events would greatly appreciate the
support Knights are known for throughout the world.
I personally would like to thank all the Brothers, Ladies of the
Knights and there family’s for their continued support of our
Council and also for myself and my family.
Thank you for the Honor of being your Deputy Grand Knight
and for being a member of such an amazing Council.

The Prolife Corner:
Well this past month I attended the Beauty for Ashes event at
the Real Life Church. This program is focused on preventing
abortion and helping those women and men who have gone
through an abortion. There is a local counseling center near
Groveland and I met with the founder and gained insight into
the program. One thing that stuck out at the presentation,
besides the strong and emotional testimonies, was the fact
that Florida Respect Life mentioned that a group had donated
23 ultrasound machines to their various pregnancy
counseling centers. Upon further inquiry I found out that it is
the Knights of Columbus. Good for us!
The Diocese of Venice has the Around the State 40 Days for
Life Campaign. It started Sept. 23, 2013 and ends Nov. 3,
2013. Prayers are said at Catholic churches in Fort Myers,
Sarasota and Port Charlotte to end abortion. Members of
these churches spend 8 hours saying the rosary in front of
know abortion facilities where innocent lives are snuffed out.
This started in 2004, expanded nationwide in 2007, and
reports that some 7500 children have been saved from
abortion through these efforts. In addition, some 40 abortion
facilities have closed or gone out of business following 40
days of life campaigns outside their doors. Well the Diocese
of Orlando participates in this program by praying in front of
the Planned Parenthood facility at 726 Tampa Ave, Orland on
Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 7 AM to 7 PM. If you
want o go or get info then for Wednesday contact Irene Doyle
at [email protected] or 847-807-5729, for Friday contact
Mike Vallaro at [email protected] or 630-272-1613 and
for Saturday contact Melissa Weisman at
[email protected] or 407-831-2662. Remember this
goes on to November 3,2013.
If you go to the Florida Right to Life web site,
floridarighttolife.org, you can see a video of a Planned
Parenthood representative opposing the proposed law that
would provide medical care to an infant born during a
botched abortion. Florida has passed a law proving that
immediate medical care must be provided an infant alive
from a botched abortion and the birth must be reported.
Thank God!
Lastly a quote from the beloved Pope John Paul II--- America
you are beautiful…and blessed…the ultimate test of your
greatness is the way you treat every human being, but
especially the weakest and defenseless. If you want equal
justice for all and true freedom and lasting peace, then
America, defend life.
As ever, Vivat Jesus!

Following the Rabbi
(Notes from a lecture given by Jeff Cavins)
I recently listened to an online presentation by Jeff Cavins,
author of the book “Walking with God,” and the creative
genius behind the Great Adventure Timeline Bible Study
series. The presentation was about being a disciple during the
time of Jesus.
We know that Jesus was a Jew and faithfully practiced
Judiasm until his crucifixion. He was arrested after
celebrating the Passover meal with his 12 disciples.
The typical Rabbi, according to Cavins, had about five
students who successfully became disciples. The exception to
this was Rabbi Hillel who have 70 disciples and there were
three phases to becoming a disciple.
The discipleship phases were:
1. Bait Sefer (House of the Book). Children ages 6 to 9 would
enter this training and basically would memorize the Torah,
the first five books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus,
Numbers, and Deuteronomy).
2. Bait Talmud (House of Talmud) During this phase,
children ages 10 to 14 would learn the oral law which was
taught by the Rabbi asking his students questions. A student
would be asked a question, for example what is 2 plus 2. The
obvious answer, 4, was not the appropriate answer. Rather, to
show a greater understanding, the student would respond with
a question such as how much is 8 minus four, or what is the
square root of 16. You’ll recall when Jesus was found in the
Temple going about his “Fathers” business, he was asking
questions and all were amazed at his knowledge.
3. Bait Midrash (Teaching of the Rabbi). A student had to
petition the Rabbi to become a disciple and he would be asked
if he had what it took to follow him and do what the Rabbi
does. Remember, they didn’t have air conditions automobiles
in those days, so they generally walked wherever they went,
rain or shine, dusty road or grassy path. The disciple would
get the same dust and grime on him as the Rabbi.
If the student demonstrated the necessary dedication and
knowledge, the Rabbi would say to him “follow me.”
Otherwise, he would tell the student to “follow your father”
which meant take up your father’s trade.
Do we have what it takes to be a disciple of Jesus. Will we
continue to walk with him when it’s raining as well as sunny?
Disciples always have time for Jesus - to pray, read Scripture,
fast and honor the Sabbath.
So how are you doing in your relationship with Jesus - would
he ask you to be his disciple?
