Blessed Lord, accept this burning candle as a sign of my faith and love for You.

Like this candle, I am ready to be used in your service without asking why and to what

purpose. Even as this candle, I wish to stand in Your presence and to be consumed in the light and warmth of our Love. Please hear my prayer

and, if it is Your will, grant my petition. But above all, make me loyal and faithful to You in

Thoughts from Father Bob, In a book of meditations by Mark Link, SJ, he shares a story that illustrates a passage from this Sun-day’s gospel. (Jesus said) “Where two or three come together in my name, I am there with them.” “George Anderson was a chaplain at a large pris-on in New York. One night he was praying with a small group of prisoners over the story of the Good Samaritan. A mentally disturbed prisoner, Richard, was present for the first time. The room was cold, and Richard was wrapped in two blankets. The prisoner opposite him was shivering. At one point while the group was praying in silence Richard suddenly got up and walked over to the shivering man, and put a blanket around him. Richard’s silent action witnessed not only to Jesus’ words to us about loving others, but also to Jesus’ presence among us when we gather in his name.” In baptism, Jesus unites himself to us and ena-bles us to amplify our love and actions toward others. As Jesus reminds us that “whatever” you do to the least of my brothers you do to me.” In the above passage he tells us that when two or three are gathered in his name he is present. This is especially true in many of the moments of our lives. He is with us in the sacrament of marriage when we need his invitation to love one another, to go forth two by two as a witness to his gospel, and employ his message of love and forgiveness for each other. The marital commitment invites Jesus to be an unseen but powerful partner to the spouses. We are able to discover that faith is not simply and expression in words but more appropriately displayed in actions.

In the celebration of the Liturgy we gather and acknowledge that we are his disciples by signing our-selves with the cross, confessing our sins and failings and are formed by the words of Holy Scripture. The body of Christ is manifested by our presence as we are prepared to receive the sacred bread from heaven our most inti-mate union with Christ. We are reminded to become what we receive and eventually sent forth by the words “ite missa est” “Go, you are sent” to actualize the pres-ence of Christ in our lives by bringing him to our loved ones, our friends and neighbors, our Church community, our society, and our world. We become an opportunity for Christ to touch the lives of others, even the stranger we meet. Like Richard we not only share our faith, our love but even the blanket we use to keep us warm. We do not need to be mentally disturbed, only filled with the realization that Christ is present in my heart and soul and that he compels us to manifest his

presence and love so as to reach out to others in his name. We do not just hear the word of God but absorb it, take it to heart, live it and express it in our daily lives. We pray that when God looks on us He does not see just us but His Son living in us. We truly become the mirror of Jesus for others. Alt-hough we are frequently distracted by the cares and worries of life the gospel is a constant reminder that Christ is with us and invites us to make his presence known to others

not merely by words but by actions.

PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in

battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the

heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into Hell, Satan and the other evil spirits, who

prowl about the world for the ruin of souls. Amen. -Pope Leo XIII

DEACON TIM’S BOOK & MOVIE REVIEW There was an 85-year-old lady who found her husband in bed with another woman. She was so enraged that she dragged him to the balcony of their Miami high-rise and pushed him off. He fell to his death. She was arrested of course. When she appeared before the judge

he asked if she had anything to say in her own defense. “Well, your honor,” she said, “I figured if he were able to be unfaithful to his wife at age 92, he surely would be able to fly.” (Reader’s Digest, Laughter, the Best Medi-cine.) I would guess that we all have had times when we were angry enough to throw someone off a high building. But Jesus tells us, in today’s Gospel, that there are better ways to deal with someone who has sinned or is sinning. First, we should talk with the person person-ally. We need to try and win them over or sway them to give up their wrong doing. Secondly, confront the per-son in the presence of two or three witnesses. Third, bring that person before the whole church. Now this is obviously a sin of serious and public nature, not some small issue. This process is meant to give the offender every chance to repent of their sinful ways. Note that this is an extremely sensitive, challenging, and difficult thing to do. It also has to be done in love with prayer. Our first reading reminds us if “you do not speak out to dissuade the wicked from his way, the wicked shall die for his guilt, but I will hold you responsible for his death,” What an awesome responsibility to meditate on. ~Deacon Mike “In Christ: We Are One, We Are Sent”

DEACON MIKE’S CORNER

Page Six September 6th, 2020

This week's book review is the biography of Rita Antoinette Rizzo, or Mother Angelica, as she is known to the world. The full title of this engaging book is The Remarkable

Story of "Mother Angelica: a Nun, Her Nerve, and a Network of Miracles". The author of the book is Ray-mond Arroyo. From 1999 to the end of 2001, Mother Angelica met with Raymond every week to answer his questions about her for this book. As Raymond points out, Mother Angelica told him that no question would be off-limits, not topic too sensitive. Or, to use her spe-cific words "Make sure you present the real me. There is nothing worse than a book that sugar-coats the truth and ducks the humanity of the person. I wish you forty years in Purgatory if you do that." It is hard to determine which is more engaging, the story presented of Mother Angelica in this book, or the anecdotes from Mother Angelica about her life and any other subject. For example, in the midst of one of her interviews with Raymond and another observer, Mother commented that "We had words once. Ray-mond didn't get to use any of them." I wish that I could give more of her words in this review, but there would not be any room for the review. As it is, to use Raymond's words, this book is the story of a "sickly girl who, with only a high school diploma, had fought her way out of poverty and single-handedly created the Eternal Word Television Net-work, the largest religious broadcasting empire in the world - succeeding where all the bishops of the United States (and several millionaires) had failed." How did a cloistered nun with no broadcast experience pull it off? THAT is the story of this book. I lovingly give this book Five Beards out of Five Beards, and my reason is explained in Pat Buchan-an's comment on this book "Mother Angelica is the beautifully told story of a beautiful woman of God whose toughness, tenacity, drive and determination built a network to bring the Catholic truth and culture to a nation that has never more desperately been in need of them."
