Blessed Lord, accept this burning candle as a sign of my faith and love for You.
Like this candle, I am ready to be used in your service without asking why and to what
purpose. Even as this candle, I wish to stand in Your presence and to be consumed in the light and warmth of our Love. Please hear my prayer
and, if it is Your will, grant my petition. But above all, make me loyal and faithful to You in
all circumstances of my life. Amen.

FEAST OF ST. BLAISE The Feast of St. Blaise is Wednesday, February 3rd, 2021. There will be a general blessing of the throats at the morning masses that day.
FALSE PROPHETS, TRUE PROPHETS In Deuteronomy today we hear that God’s very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God’s mouth. In Mark’s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God’s own voice, the Holy One of God. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. But in today’s Gospel we learn that Jesus’ fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn’t an authority because he was popular or fa-mous. We also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scrip-ture, even against God’s purposes. And today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true proph-ets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God’s very words filling our mouths. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

No parish Fish-Fry’s this year. With Lent right around the corner, many parishioners have been asking if we are going to hold our two parish Fish Fry’s. It has been something on my mind since the beginning of Advent and I have been hoping and praying that the pandemic would have subsided more but it hasn't and in fact, the numbers have gotten higher and the new variant is making things more dangerous. Because the Fish Fry’s are so important to the parish at large, I took the time talking with the team leaders of both Fish Fry’s to get their feedback after having discussion with some of their key volunteers. I also met jointly with the parish Finance Council and Pastoral Council to discuss the pru-dence of holding the fish fry’s during the current pan-demic situation. We discussed, at length and in detail, the possibilities of just providing take-out only. It was unani-mously agreed that it was not a prudent thing to do given the average age of many of our volunteers and the fact that the new variant of Covid-19 is more contagious. God has been very good to our parish in many ways and we can get by without the funds by continuing to work with-in our budget and eliminating unnecessary expenditures this year. No amount of money is worth risking the loss on just one life to the pandemic.
It is a sacrifice well worth making. With our parish not having our two fish fry’s, we also have a wonderful opportunity to help the many small res-taurants, bars and cafes, right here in our own community by getting our Fish Sandwiches from them on the Fridays of Lent. Let them know you are from the parish and we are supporting them and praying for them this Lent. We discussed the possibility of holding another par-ish raffle in place of the fish fry’s and using much of the proceeds to help the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank as well as our local Meals-On-Wheels programs and any fellow parishioners who may need some help. The raffle would be for those who choose to participate with the total understanding that not everyone may be able to participate given the current circumstances. More information will follow soon.
A bunch of “Thank You’s” Now that things have settled a little for me, I want to extend a Thank You to everyone who helped decorate our
churches for the Christmas Holiday. That includes the parish decorating committee led by Rich Heinz. Our maintenance team did a wonderful job decorating the out-side of our churches with the help of Fr. Bob and the youth ministry who took care of Holy Angels Church. They are always looking for more help in any of our churches so if you have some time and would like to help, please call or email me or Deacon Andy. You may not realize it but without the help of the vol-unteers on the parish COVID-19 Task Team, we would not have been able to celebrate many of the masses we currently have been able to and still are able to. Thank You to those men and women for courageously being there to provided assistance greeting, ushering and count-ing at the weekend and Holiday Masses to keep everyone safe during this pandemic. If you would like to serve in this ministry, more help is needed so please call or email me or Deacon Andy. The Christmas window was successful in helping peo-ple who were unable to attend Mass or enter the church buildings, to still experience some Christmas Spirit while visiting and praying in the presence of the Eucharist. Thank You to the parish staff who helped put my vision into reality it was a job well done from a great team. Thank You to all from the parish who extended Christmas greetings to me with cards, gifts and goodies. Your kindness and generosity are heart warming and mean more than you can ever know.
A Great Big and Heartfelt Thank You to everyone from the parish for continuing to support the parish with your love, generosity and your prayers and words of en-couragement. You continue to inspire me with your will-ingness and desire to live the gospel through your ac-tions! Because of you, our parish continues to touch the lives of many people right in our own community in many tangible but loving ways. Thank You to every-one who shared kind words, thoughts and pray-ers with me after having to say goodbye to my lit-tle dog Smokey. He truly was a special little dog and an exceptional com-panion and will be missed dearly. Smokey has been with me for over fifteen of the almost sixteen years of my priesthood and he adapted to every rectory, office and situa-tion very well. He made the many difficult decisions and situations I faced as a pastor easier to deal with and heal from, with his unconditional love and his wonderful play-fulness. Smokey touched the lives of so many parishion-ers from all thirteen parishes we were a part of with his gifted way of immediately bringing smiles and laughter to people, even in tough times. He was a wonderful gift from God for which I am extremely grateful.

PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL Saint Michael, the Archangel,
defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God, thrust into Hell, Satan and the other evil spirits, who prowl about the
world for the ruin of souls. Amen. -Pope Leo XIII

Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel
before the L who made us. — Psalm 95:6
THANKING THOSE WHO FEED THE HUNGARY There has been a lot in the news about the number of people and families that are hungry and in need of food and other necessities. We should all appreciate our many parishioners and members of other churches who volunteer and work to feed the hungry at several food banks in our parish area and the surrounding communi-ties. These dedicated men and women may coordinate volunteers and activities, pick up food at distribution sites and deliver it to the food banks, sort and package foods, or distribute tons of food to those in need. You may not know who they are but their work goes on throughout the year. Thank you!
Instead of my usual book or movie review for this week, I would like to highlight a powerful and timely quote from St. Apollinaris, who was the first bishop of Ravenna and died in the first century. Please give some extra thought and reflection upon his words. It may be more important for you than you realize.
“We therefore grossly deceive ourselves in not allot-ting more time to the study of divine truths. It is not enough barely to believe them, and let our thoughts now and then glance upon them: that knowledge which shows us heaven, will not bring us to the possession of it, and will deserve punishments, not rewards, if it remain slight, weak, and superfi-cial. By serious and frequent meditation it must be con-cocted, digested, and turned into the nourishment of our affections, before it can be powerful and opera-tive enough to change them, and produce the neces-sary fruit in our lives. For this all the saints affected solitude and retreats from the noise and hurry of the world, as much as their circumstances allowed them.” – St. Apollinaris
Each of his sentences are very powerful, and as mean-ingful today as they were in the first century AD, when he spoke them. His first sentence points out how we deceive ourselves by not giving more time to study di-vine truths, the Word of God, the Bible. His last sen-tence speaks about retreating from the noise and hurry of the world, his world back at the end of the first centu-ry. How much more noise and distraction is there in our world today? My sincere prayer is that you read and reflect upon St. Apollinaris' quote, and then take some time today to read your Bible and then some infor-mation about the life of one of our Saints.
Live Jesus in our hearts... Forever! Deacon Tim
