Chaminade Notes Father Chaminade Life – Born April 8 th 1761 in Perigueux ,France – 3 of his brothers were priests – Ordained a priest in 1785 – In 1790 after the outbreak of the French Revolution, he moved to Bordeaux, where he spent most of his life. Chaminades concept of sodality was to gather all Christians, men & women, into a community of Christian followers who are committed to living and sharing their faith, supporting the gospel. n  It was the official confirmation of his insights into the Church in this new era.

dedicate their vocation to teaching

– 1830- Sought to establish a network of schools to train Catholic teachers

Membership in the Society of Mary

n Aspirancy – Period of discernment. – Young man feels called to religious life &

comes to live in the community. – Promises to prepare for religious life – Given his habit and a crucifix – Generally one year

n Novitiate – Young man enters a year as a novice (new

member) – Begins a period of study of theology and

philosophy in preparation for vows.

n Temporary Profession – Young man takes vows of poverty,

chastity and obedience for a period of one year.

– Vows are renewable for 3 to 6 years. – At profession, he is given a silver ring to

symbolize his commitment – He finishes his education and begins his

work in the apostolate (work of the order)

Membership in the Society of Mary

n Perpetual Profession – After b/w 3 & 6 years as a temporarily

professed brother, he can request perpetual vows (vows for life)

– After a consultation, permission of perpetual vows comes from Rome.

– Brother professes vows of poverty, chastity, obedience & stability for life.

– Given a golden ring as a symbol of his life commitment.
