P ’ C LORD,TEACHUSTOPRAY(33). I continue shar-ing from my letter home on April 25, 1976. “I can trust that the Lord wants to heal and transform all those forces in me which prevent me from loving myself and others in the same way He does. I know that this will be a lifetime process, but I feel a fresh sense of progress already. Alleluia! I am convinced that my troublesome symptoms of tiredness and de-pression are not indications that the Lord is calling me to another vocation. Rather, they are a call to ex-perience what salvation and healing love mean in a deeper way. It means that I must not only believe that the Lord loves and heals others, but that He de i-nitely wants me to know that He loves me and wants to heal me. I know that the ordinary way that the Lord ministers His healing love is through other faithful, through the Sacraments and through special intercessory prayers. I thank God with all my heart that He has blessed me with so many loved ones, near and far away. Thanks again to you for your prayers for me. Don’t stop. Nor shall I cease to pray for you.” My battle with occasional anxiety and depression would cause me to look through my ile of quotable quotes to ind Fr. Michael Buckley, S.J.’s famous 1972 Letter to the Ordinands, “There is a further pressing question, one proper to the priesthood, if not unique-ly proper to it: Is this man weak enough to be a priest? Let me spell out what I mean. Is this man de i-cient enough so that he can’t ward off signi icant suf-fering from his life, so that he lives with a certain amount of failure, so he feels what it is to be an aver-age man? Because it is in this de iciency, in this inte-rior lack, in this weakness, maintains Hebrews, that the ef iciency of the ministry and priesthood of Christ lies. “For because He Himself has suffered and been tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted … For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses…” (More to come). Blessings, Fr. John
