Sometimes when Im thinking there are so many strands going on that I lose track of them. I wonder about who I am, where Im going, what people think of me. In one minute Im cynical and pessimistic, and in the next I can be happy

to be a part of the human race.

Brightly and suddenly, he poured the champagne. His grin was fleshy but honest. Inwardly he thought of his mother, what she would think were she here. And of the prime minister, be-cause he fancied himself a political man, not above the law but certainly above the politicians, morally.

and my fingernails bitten to bits.In their eyes you knew

they were screwing you over, and they did it with a smile.

The crowd had anxiously followed the fighter all season, at first ironically, and then eventually with full-fledged and unashamed support. But here he was, and most could agree that he had reached and passed his prime game. Everyone knew that this was where he would fall. They knew it in their hearts and yet they bit their nails and sweated and jumped and cheered in support for the young gladiator. But all the support in the world wouldn’t save this young gladiator, who waited in golden armor in the hot sun for his death by hungry lion.
