ROADTO
BLISSFIELDS...
Bear Cavalry
The ‘Road To Blissfields’ competition gives local talent
the opportunity to compete for one of three possible slots to play at the festival.
This year saw the festival crew and competition organisers MintSouth go through 100 entries before witling them down for three live heats, which took place in Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester, with the winner from each earning a slot at the festival.
Jodie Copeland, Editor of MintSouth, had a lot of fun this year and has a high opinion of the entries: “The quality of the bands was amazing. Flight Brigade are definitely ones to watch out for, and make sure you check out LST and the Man Dem too - they work so hard and it’s great they are finally getting the recognition they deserve.”
Winners of the Portsmouth heat, Gosport’s Bear Cavalry, are a four-piece experimental indie
band that have received much support from BBC 6music. Describing themselves as ‘quirky pop excellence’, the boys loved the whole experience: “It’s nice that a local festival has made such an effort to book local artists. The quality of music from all the artists at the Portsmouth show was really high and we feel
flattered to have been picked to play the festival.”

Southampton born-and-bred MC LST and his band The Man Dem were the winners of their hometown heat. Influenced by everyone from The Kooks to Kano, he has just signed a licensing and publishing deal with New York’s ‘Diamond Life Records’. Being somewhat of a lyrical genius, he has a very unique and creative style sending out a strong message to today’s youth.
Made up of a husband and wife, two sisters and four brothers, Flight Brigade were the winners of the Winchester heat. Bringing together the best in rock music with folk melodies, the band was conceived during rehearsals in a derelict church. “It was
a massive honour to be part of the heats. The night we played in Winchester was an absolute blast; incredibly well organised, great sound and a buzzing atmosphere,” they explained. “We were
super chuffed to win a place and cannot wait to play the festival in the summer! Boom.”
Be sure to check out all three acts over the weekend, and keep an eye on the Blissfields website for information about next year’s competition…

WHAT’S ON?Away from the main stages, there’s a whole other festival
going on! Here are some of the highlights to check out...

Modulate. By night it magically
transforms into the party district,
with strobe lights and DJs spinning
out pumping tunes where you can
continue the festivities into the early
hours. It will be almost impossible to
spot everything it has to offer, but just
have fun and see where a night in the
Hidden Hedge will take you.

AFTER HOURS...
It’s not just the little ones that are catered
for over the weekend. Blissfields also makes sure that those with a slightly later bedtime get a chance to party into the early hours, and this year’s no exception. Crowd favourites the Hidden Hedge and the Blisscotheque will once again be housing sets from a fantastic selection of DJs. Here are two to look out for…
Landing in the Blisscotheque on Friday
night, Nottingham’s Crazy P have been peddling their playful brand of funky house for well over a decade now, supplying them with the experience required to rock a party ‘til the early hours. Or, in the case of their Blissfields set, midnight.
Raffertie
Recent Ninja Tune signee Raffertie
is known for his eclectic and relentless productions, hopping
between different dance floor genres with ease – often within the same song. The young Birmingham native beams onto the Blisscotheque midway through a mammoth worldwide tour, keeping the festival
moving into the early hours of Sunday morning.Crazy P

TURNER

Friday, 20.10 @ Out of this World
Winchester’s favourite son - and former Million Dead front
man – Frank Turner has shockingly never appeared at Blissfields, despite attending as a mere punter in the past. He will be peddling his unique brand of folk/punk at this homecoming festival debut on Friday night, headlining the Out of This World stage, midway through an intense world tour for new album England Keep my Bones. “The promo schedule has been hectic: I’ve been in Germany, Australia, London, Canada, America and Scotland (in that order) recently”, Turner explains ahead of his Blissfields appearance. “Everyone seems excited about the upcoming release, which is good because I am too!” A seasoned festival regular, Turner’s personal highlight came at Reading last year: “I was invited to get up and play guitar with NOFX, which was pretty much a dream come true as they’re one of my all-time favourite bands, so thatwas fun. I’ve seen
some awesome sets at festivals as well in my time - seeing Battles at Glastonbury last year was ace.” He will have the stage to himself at Blissfields however, something he is looking forward to. “Smaller festivals are great fun: more personal. I love playing them, and headlining is also a privilege!” Turner will no doubt be giving it his all to the home crowd this Friday, so make sure you get down there and don’t miss out!

GOLDPANDA
Following (and preceding) a slew of EP
releases, London producer Gold Panda last year released his full length debut, Lucky Shiner, to much critical acclaim. The knob-twiddling beat maker (real name Derwin Panda) builds on his time
spent in Japan and at the School of Oriental and
African Studies at the University of London, as well as extensive and wide-
reaching touring, to incorporate elements and snippets of far-eastern and other world musics into his cyclical productions. His Blissfields appearance will come in the middle of yet another mammoth tour. “It’s been pretty good,” Panda says of the dates so far. “Most of the shows have been sold out or close to it. Highlights are mainly food-based, but
dancing to a Caribou DJ set in Amsterdam and getting him to spin my request was pretty good.”

CAMPSaturday, 19.00 @ Out of this World
Enigmatic boy/girl duo Summer Camp certainly
fit neatly into the ‘chillwave’ bracket, despite members Jeremy Warmsley and Elizabeth Sankey hailing from our own capital and not the sun bleached west coast of America. Their sepia-toned tunes will surely be a hit at Blissfields. “We love playing festivals,” explain the band. “It’s a great chance to meet new people and get muddy. We can’t wait for Blissfields, it’s going to be great!”
Summer Camp hit the Out of This World stage on Saturday, where the guys promise a special set. “We had to ditch the lion-taming section of the show, but the chainsaw jugglers are back, as is the guy who eats fireworks!”

SUMMER
20 21
Following the success of last year’s return-to-form Mixed
Race, the former Massive Attack man steps off the plane fresh from a world tour to make his debut at Blissfields. Closing the Out of This World stage on Saturday night, expect classics from a pioneer in the world of hip-hop/trip-hop/electro/dancehall/rock/whatever else Adrian Thaws has thrown into his seemingly boundless melting pot
throughout a highly prolific career, with tracks from critically acclaimed and award winning albums such as Blowback, Knowe West Boy and the timeless Maxinquaye all set to make an appearance. With Massive Attack’s Blue Lines celebrating its 20th anniversary this year (I know, scary right?), Tricky shows no signs of letting up, and his Blissfields slot could be an early contender for highlight of the festival season.

For 11 years now, the sleepy heat-haze of Hampshire’s mid-summer
countryside has awoken to the shimmering thrill of one of the UK’s finest independent festivals. But has anyone noticed Solent’s students working their hoodies off? Blissfields is a festival that’s close to
the hearts of everyone at Southampton Solent University. It’s here they’ve found the kindred spirits in Paul and Mel Bliss and their team, to create a forward thinking educational partnership,
supporting students operating in almost every area of the event. Dr Martin James, Senior Coordinator of Solent Music Festivals explains: “It took vision and trust for Blissfields to invite us into their party, allowing students the chance to prove their abilities. It’s been a real success over the four years we’ve worked together.” Blissfields and Solent have teamed up
once again with students from the music scheme, in particular the Popular Music Journalism course who are running the media team for the third consecutive year. Enjoy the festival and if you spot anyone frantically working away just think they could be students enjoying possibly the best work experience… ever!Want to find out more about Solent’s courses?
