Microphones

Microphone Directionality

What is the directionality of a camcorder? Straight ahead! Not all Microphones are the same

Microphone Directionality

Omnidirectional Microphones Good when you need sound from everywhere. “Omni” means all

Microphone Directionality

Unidirectional microphone Picks up from the front, little from the sides and

almost none from behind Really good at picking up sound right in front of

microphone “Uni” means one

Handheld/Dynamic Microphone You use handheld microphones for

interviews, musical performances, and for choirs to sing into.

Lavaliere Microphone

These microphones are used for news anchors, sports broadcasters, and anyone that needs to use their hands while they talk. They can be wired or wireless.

Shotgun Microphone

This type of microphone can only take sound in from the front tip. This is mostly used for videotaping guest speakers or presentations when the videographer is at the back of the room.

Surface Mount Microphone

These microphones are used when there are people sitting around a table and you need one microphone for the whole meeting.

Think of a conference – it is “mounted” on the “surface” of a table.

Wireless Microphone Systems This is used when a reporter is in a large

crowd and you don’t want a cable running through the crowd.

Pressure Zone Microphone

This microphone is also used to record sound for large groups.

Pressure Zone Microphone PZM Microphones are a special type of

condenser microphone. Also known as a boundary microphone, this type of microphone uses a sound phenomena called the boundary effect.

These mics are often used in conference situations, where they can be placed conveniently and unobtrusively in the middle of the table.

Pressure Zone Microphone Works by…

A small condenser microphone is mounted face-down a short distance from the reflective boundary plate. This creates a pressure zone between the plate and the mic. The microphone detects changes in this pressure zone, rather than the conventional method of detecting changes in the surrounding air pressure (i.e. sound waves).

Main advantage: the elimination of interference from reflected sound waves

Microphone Situation 1

You are using your consumer-level camcorder to record an interview with the coach at a pep rally.

Which microphone do you want to use?

Microphone Situation 2

A string quartet- two violins, a cello, and a string bass- are coming to your professional TV studio, and you really want to use only one microphone.

What microphone do you use?

Microphone Cables

XLR Stereo (quarter inch) 3.5 Mini (1/8” mini) RCA

Use Headphones

You can instantly tell that your sound is good or if it has a problem

Handle Your Microphones Carefully If dropped it will most likely need to be

replaced This includes the cable, do not drop, twist or

close a door on it Test by speaking, never tap

Carefully Connect Your Microphone Be gentle when connecting your cable

Use a Windscreen When Recording Outdoors Foam rubber that fits over your microphone Cuts down on rumbling sound created by

bursts of wind

Use the Correct Talent-to-Microphone Distance Microphone should be 4 to 6 inches away

from the source Place near source not just in general area

With a shoulder partner…
