Trowels

Tools include a laying trowel, pointing trowel, builder’s nylon line and pins.

Laying blocks will use all tools shown: the laying trowel lays the bed and perp joint to the block; the pointing trowel will allow empty joints to be filled; and the line and pins help with levelling.

Levels comes in many different sizes. The most common for laying blocks is the 1.2m. The long 1.8 or 2.0m levels are very useful when laying blocks.

Hammers

The hammer on the left is the club hammer.

The hammer below is the brick hammer.

The hammer below is the scutch.

The comb above fixes to the comb hammer.

Hammers

Although the hammer on the left is a carpentry hammer many brick and block layers require a claw hammer at different stages of construction to remove nails and screws.

Bolster

The brick and block bolster used with the club hammer to cut blocks.

Builder’s square

The builder’s square is used to set out and maintain a square corner in blockwork.

Masonry saw

The masonry or block saw is used to cut lightweight blocks.

Tape measures ranging from 3m to 30m.

Gauge rod

A gauge rod is required to maintain the correct height of both brick and blockwork.

Hand brush

A handbrush is used to remove small mortar particles from the face of blockwork when jointed.
