The Hospital Club presents The Baldwin Gallery’s Betwixt, exploring the organic and psychic transference be-tween selves and species, featuring the shape-changing photography of David Ellingsen and Meryl McMaster.
Of indigenous and European descent, Plains Cree sculptural-photographer, McMaster, pits delimi ng iden es– Na ve American, Canadian, female, human – against the immediacy of her lived body in the natural world.She expresses heritage and contemporaneity as a syn ergis c strength of uni es, rather than a struggle betweenopposites.
Ellingsen’s Anthropocene series is inspired by the proposed renaming of our geological epoch, as Earth’s sys-tems are irrevocably altered by human ac vity. Transmuted skeletal remains, adri on blackness, reference futureand past and are both a warning and rendering of hope.
Both ar sts have shown in museums around the world, from The Beaty Biodiversity Museum, Canada, andthe Datz Museum of Art, South Korea (Ellingsen), to the Smithsonian and the Art Gallery of Ontario (McMaster).

Photographed the last day of another year yesterday and here is 2017, a new addi on to [2]Weather Pa erns,an on-going visual diary of climate breakdown.
The years 2017, 2016 and 2015 make up the 3 ho est years on record for the planet. 2016 and 2015 were ElNino years and to have 2017, in which El Nino was absent, join the others in the top 3 illustrates the relentless paceof climate breakdown.
Also emerging in this work is evidence of the record-breaking forest fires here in the Pacific Northwest. Notethe yellow cast to many of the photographs about two-thirds of the way down the work.
Last June [3]an ar cle appeared in The Guardian tled “World has three years le to stop dangerous climatechange”. Repor ng on a warning le er from prominent climate experts, this now gives us 2.5 years from this newyear’s day. If we hope to s ll have a planet hospitable to life by the end of this century the me for ac on is now.There are solu ons prepared and plans made to meet this challenge and we must demand that our representa vesin government put them into ac on.

The first in the series Plas c: Fossil to Fossil opened in April with work from, among others, MandyBarker and Chris Jordan.
"The exhibi on series GUARDIANS examines the influence of humans on the biodiversity that surrounds us.This second part looks at what we extract from nature. With both plants and animals, the preserva on of biodiversityis under pressure. Chemical contamina on is causing the seedbed for flora and fauna to disappear. Economic

“FACING ANTHROPOCENE”

With sand dollar headdresses and disembodied lupine jaws, the newest photograph collec on by David Ellingsen atthe Winchester Gallery is shrouded in the slick smear of primordial algae and the whispers of wild heartbeats.
The images are studio-shot on a stark black background, offering nothing to distract from the eerie creaturesEllingsen has created in his collec on, Anthropocene. Two bird skulls nestle in the eye sockets of a human skull; aturtle carapace takes the place of a brain; in yet another, the human skull is held in the predatory clasp of a sea lion’spi ed jaws. The images make your hackles rise. You may be standing in a white-washed art gallery, you tell yourself,but your wilder nature tenses its hamstrings, prepared to run.
Ellingsen, who freelanced for years as an editorial and adver sing photographer for New York Times Maga-zine, CBC Radio Canada, Men’s Journal and MTV/Nickelodeon, has been focusing exclusively on his art since 2013.Rife with environmental commentary, his collec ons have been exhibited worldwide, including being a permanentpart of the Chinese Museum of Photography and Vancouver’s Beaty Biodiversity Museum. Nine photos from TheLast Stand, a series of stump portraits, will be permanent fixtures at The Datz Museum in Seoul.
The seeds for Anthropocene took root when he first read the term in a news ar cle.
“Based on global evidence that Earth’s natural systems have been irrevocably altered by human ac vity, thisterm redefines the current geological me period as being human-influenced,” he says in his ar st’s statement.
For a species as young as we are — with civiliza on as we know it about 6,000 years old, and industrializa ononly ramping up in the 1800s — that is a monumental and vastly unse ling claim.
“It just shook me to my core,” says Ellingsen. “A lot of the me it’s a sort of visceral feeling that starts me off.This collec on es into my feelings that it’s crisis me with climate change.”
Though the term has been around since 2000, it was only on August 29, 2016 that the Subcommission onQuaternary Stra graphy recommended formalizing anthropocene as the current geological epoch. It was just one ofmany recent pointsof-no-return that the human race has passed in the last decades, leaving our future as a speciesmore than uncertain.
To take that revela on and turn it into art was a natural next step for Ellingsen. Being tuned in to the healthof the environment has always come second nature for the ar st, having grown up on a farm on the remote CortesIsland.

“Growing up in a place like Cortes, the environment and the landscape is equally, if not more important thanyour family is,” he says. “You really see the balance of life and death.
When you’re slaughtering animals for food, you see what’s necessary to actually sustain another life. Thatisn’t bad or good, it just is.”
Seeing that balance irreversibly sha ered by human influence, both on a local and global scale, spurred Ellingsen toac on.
“I was looking at reintegra ng nature back into humanity,” he says of Anthropocene. “We keep extrica ngourselves from nature and pu ng ourselves above, and exer ng dominion over it. We live on top of nature, not in it.But we’re s ll ruled by ins nct and not reason.”
In life, the photos are expansive, bold statements on the gallery’s white walls. With no glass to separate themfrom the viewer, Ellingsen’s creatures seem almost to emerge from their black backgrounds and into the room. It’s afeeling of movement that’s emphasized by a startling level of detail, achieved by “focus stacking.”
“I don’t normally talk a lot about the technical aspects of my work,” says Ellingsen, hesita ng at first to getinto the jargon of photography.
“Normally, if you’re looking at me, you’re focusing on my eye or my nose, and the rest of my face is out of fo-cus, and what’s behind me is out of focus,” he says.
With focus stacking, Ellingsen sets the focus on the closest point of his subject, and then takes a mul tude ofshots, changing the focus slightly each me, moving farther back with each shu er snap. The challenge is to thenbuild an image using the sharpest parts of each.
The technique offers a new level of clarity that allows the viewer to see the work in a way the human eye simply can’t.
“I really do hope to poke and prod people into ac on,” he says, freely admi ng this collec on is not designedto make anyone comfortable. “There was an inten on behind that abruptness. There are a few things I hope for.One is that people become aware of the term anthropocene because for me it’s so monumental.”
We will evolve and adapt, he adds, but at what cost? How can we as a species integrate our advancements inmedicine, engineering and agriculture into a global lifestyle that also protects the planet?
But even through the undeniable threats of climate change, Ellingsen has a strong sense of hope for the planet, andfor us, especially when he’s immersed in the natural world. Several of his other ongoing collec ons get him out intonature and at the ocean’s edge.
“It gives me a touchstone every day just to look at the ocean and the sky,” he says. “When I’m back here, Ifeel like the natural environment here feeds me in a way I can’t describe.”
“Some mes this kind of work really stresses you out,” he says with a bit of a laugh. But with the comple onof the Anthropocene collec on, “I feel a sense of peace. I really do feel at peace with the idea of life and death, goodand bad, the yin and yang of life.”
“We had seen David’s work from previous series,” says Elizabeth Levinson of Winchester Gallery, Ellingsen’shome gallery now that he’s moved back to Victoria from Cortes.

“His technical ability is superb, but we were a racted to what he had to say through his lens about the stateof the planet, and about hope for its future. It’s been an honour to hold the interna onal launch of the Anthropoceneseries.”
A er spending much of his career in the breakneck pace of commercial photography, being able to step backand stretch his ar s c muscles has been a welcome change for Ellingsen.
“It’s about slowing down and pu ng thought into it. Being an ar st really dovetails into the way I was raised,”he says.
He’s able to spend the me needed to capture the essence of an idea — explore inspira on, and research sto-ries and images from other cultures and peoples.
“Being a photographic ar st now,” he says, “I feel completely at home.”

Intervals: Photography in Flux is an exhibi on about the transitory nature of photography. Every image, de-pending on me, loca on, viewer, and context, is constantly in transi on. Photographers create meaning thatfluctuates in the intervals between their images—whether it be the intervals between the shu er opening andclosing, the intervals between the images on the wall, the interval between the image and the material on whichit is presented, or the interval between the meaning that arises and changes in the viewer as they move betweenimages. Intervals presents the work of seven contemporary photographers based in Vancouver, Victoria, Los Angeles,Honolulu, and Iran who explore the rhythms and tension of their geographical, social, and psychological landscapes.

Recent work for the on-going project Weather Pa erns.
Figures released by the US science agency NOAA for March, 2015 show that for the first me since recordsbegan the parts per million (ppm) of CO2 in the atmosphere were over 400 globally for an en re month. Thisconcentra on has not occurred in over a million years.
This grid illustrates the 16 days photographed in March 2015, mul plied by 25, in order to mark this mile-stone event with a work of 400 parts.

Globally, the month of July 2015 was the ho est in recorded history to date. This grid of 30 contains the 14days photographed in July. The remaining days are each represented by a composite of ver cal sec ons of thosesame 14 days.
Project Notes:
Ini ated in 2011, Weather Pa erns is a long term project visually archiving climate trends and events in Canada’sPacific Northwest.
The compila ons realize collec ons of days as a single work, enabling the viewer to see wide swaths of thesehistorical records…such as a month or a year…in one glance. Both local and global events are represented with somegroupings compiled for conceptual reasons and others as pure archival data in order for visual trends to emerge overme.

J-32 Orca, Pacific Northwest, Canada
Published this week in LensCulture’s [2]Contemporary Issues sec on, I consider this photograph one of the

most important in my career to date...
A pregnant Orca, known as J-32, was discovered dead near Comox in the Pacific Northwest in December, 2014. Thisphotograph was made during the necropsy 2 days later.
Preliminary data indicates a combina on of starva on and toxic anthropogenic pollutants were the cause.
When a whale cannot find enough food it begins to metabolize its blubber fat and, as the Northwest killerwhales are among the most contaminated marine mammals in the world, the toxic chemicals enter their blood-stream causing serious illness and death.
This photograph comes from an on-going series tled "Singular Observa ons" collec ng stand-alone images,small projects and field observa ons o en captured while traveling or working on larger projects and assignments.The images are realized as large scale exhibi on prints.
