BLOODBORNEPATHOGENS ARE:

• Disease causing microorganisms that are present in human blood and can cause disease in humans.

• Most common examples include: Hepatitis B virus, Hepatitis C Virus, Human Immunodeficiency Virus

• Infected blood may be in other “bodily fluids” (liquids originating inside the body that can then exit) such as:

• saliva (drool)• mucus (snot)• Feces (poop)• Urine (pee)• Vomit• Loose skin (skin coming off of body)

• We need to treat all bodily fluids like they could be infectious

WHO’S BLOOD HAS PATHOGENS?

• You can’t tell you by looking at a person; we need to treat all bodily fluids like they could be infectious

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE

• At KCI you may be exposed to potentially infected bodily fluids, this is called “occupational exposure”

• Occupational exposure: reasonably anticipated skin, eye, mucous membrane or parental contact with blood or other potentially infectious material that may result from the performance of an employee’s duties

• While in the classroom, on a bus, or on the playground your skin, eyes, mucous membranes, or open wound may come in contact with blood or bodily fluids from others that may put you at risk of developing a bloodborne disease

WHO’S AT RISK??

• At KCI those at risk of exposure include:• Teachers• Assistant Teachers• Bus Drivers• Substitutes• CD• FA• Staff who work directly with children and may be required

to perform CPR/First Aid

MOST COMMON BLOODBORNE DISEASES

• HIV: Human Immunodeficiency Virus causes AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome)

• HBV: Hepatitis B virus causes liver disease - vaccination available

• HCV: Hepatitis C virus affects the liver- no vaccination available

HIV

• HIV is Human Immunodeficiency Virus• Caused by virus in blood• Signs and Symptoms:

• Swollen glands• Night sweats• Fever, chills• Joint Pain• Flu-like• Fatigue• Rash

• HIV lowers the immune system's ability to fight diseases• Can cause acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)

Page 11: Blood Bourne Pathogens AreBlood Bourne Pathogens Are: Author eedin Created Date 8/11/2020 2:35:16 PM ...

HBV/HEP B VIRUS• Most common occupationally-acquired infection• Caused by a virus in blood• Can survive on surfaces for more than one week• Causes inflammation of the liver

• Signs and Symptoms:• Nausea• Lack of appetite• Fatigue• Joint pain• Dark urine• Jaundice- yellow color to skin and whites of eyes• Fever

Page 12: Blood Bourne Pathogens AreBlood Bourne Pathogens Are: Author eedin Created Date 8/11/2020 2:35:16 PM ...

HCV/HEP C VIRUS• It is the most common chronic bloodborne infection in US• Caused by a virus in blood• Causes inflammation of the liver• No vaccination available• Signs and Symptoms:

• Jaundice - yellow color to skin and whites of eyes• Fatigue• Headache• Abdominal Pain• Loss of appetite• Nausea and vomiting• Joint Pain

FACTS TO REMEMBER

• There are no curse for these 3 diseases, there is only treatment available

• HIV, HBV, HCV are not spread through the air like flu or cold viruses

• You cannot become infected through coughing, sneezing, a kiss on the cheek, a hug, or from drinking fountains or food.

• HIV, HBV, HCV are all transmitted through an infected person’s blood, or body fluid containing visible blood, coming in contact with your blood

• The virus must get inside your body

Page 14: Blood Bourne Pathogens AreBlood Bourne Pathogens Are: Author eedin Created Date 8/11/2020 2:35:16 PM ...

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

• If you see any of these symptoms after being involved in a possible infectious incident

• Inform your supervisor• Get tested• Receive appropriate vaccines• Begin treatment if instructed by physician

WAYS TO PREVENT TRANSMISSIONOF BLOOD-BORNE VIRUSES

• Before an incident occurs, here are ways you can protect yourself and others:• Promote Hepatitis vaccinations• Treat all blood as potentially

infectious• Prevent injuries with active

supervision• Make sure your environment is

safe; report any problems immediately to your supervisor (i.e. broken glass, equipment with a sharp edge)

• Wash your hands frequently:• When you enter classroom• After you sneeze/blow your

nose• After playing outside• Before meals• When assisting a child with

first aid or bathroom use• Make sure children practice good

hygiene:• Sneeze into their arms• Wipe or blow runny noses• Clean all surface areas

PROTECTION

• Skin usually protects from pathogens• Cuts, chapping, small cracks may allow

germs to enter the body though, putting us at risk

• If you have open wounds, cover them while at work

Page 18: Blood Bourne Pathogens AreBlood Bourne Pathogens Are: Author eedin Created Date 8/11/2020 2:35:16 PM ...

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

• Always use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when dealing with blood or bodily fluids

• Personal Protective Equipment may include:• First Aid Gloves- use new gloves for each patient• Booties• Apron• Mask

• You decide what equipment is necessary for each incident

Page 19: Blood Bourne Pathogens AreBlood Bourne Pathogens Are: Author eedin Created Date 8/11/2020 2:35:16 PM ...

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU NEED?

• A child is in line for the bus and vomits on the floor• Gloves and booties may be helpful to protect your shoes• Packet Red-Z Absorbent helps solidify vomit for clean-up• Scooper for cleaning up vomit

• A child cut their finger and is shaking it to make the pain stop

• Gloves, an apron and potentially a mask will protect from flying blood

• Child has an accident during naptime and urinates in their pants

• Gloves, sanitizer, biohazard bag for clothes

Page 20: Blood Bourne Pathogens AreBlood Bourne Pathogens Are: Author eedin Created Date 8/11/2020 2:35:16 PM ...

DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR PPE IS?

• All classrooms and buses have a Bodily Fluid Disposal Kit, it contains:

• Nitrile Gloves• Apron• Eye Shield/Face Mask• Packet Red-Z Absorbent• SaniZide Disinfectant/Cleaner• Biohazard Bags• Scoop• Scraper• Paper Towels

• If you use a kit, please see Health office for a complete, new one

• If you don’t know where you kit is take the time to find it now…

Page 21: Blood Bourne Pathogens AreBlood Bourne Pathogens Are: Author eedin Created Date 8/11/2020 2:35:16 PM ...

IF AN INCIDENT OCCURS1. Grab a Bodily Fluid Disposal Kit2. Put on first aid gloves3. Perform first aid if necessary4. Block off area where bodily fluids are so no one walks through

them5. Clean up bodily fluids using disposable towels and sanitizer in

Bodily Fluid Disposal Kit6. Sanitize any cleaning equipment (i.e. mops, bucket, trash

can)7. Inform your supervisor and complete and incident report

*Unsure of what to do in the event of an incident? Look in the KCI SOP’s

CLEANING UP AFTER AN INCIDENT• Removing gloves

after an incident can be difficult

• We need to remove gloves without getting fluids on our skin or clothes

• This diagram shows bow to remove gloves safely

• Then wash your hands thoroughly

Page 23: Blood Bourne Pathogens AreBlood Bourne Pathogens Are: Author eedin Created Date 8/11/2020 2:35:16 PM ...

CLEANING UP AFTER AN INCIDENT

• Tie all material with bodily fluids up in a biohazard bag (found in Bodily Fluid Disposal Kit)

• Take biohazard trash bags out to the dumpster after incident clean up

Page 24: Blood Bourne Pathogens AreBlood Bourne Pathogens Are: Author eedin Created Date 8/11/2020 2:35:16 PM ...

INCIDENT REPORTS• If a child is injured at KCI, especially if

blood or bodily fluids were spilled, an Incident Report must be completed

• Do not wait to fill the form out, call in your supervisor if you need someone in ratio while you complete the report

• This form needs to go home with parent before child leaves for the day so parents know what happened

1 copy to the parent/guardian, 1 Copy to the Health Assistant after Center Director reviews and signs and original goes to the file after Center Director reviews

and signs

KCI BLOOD-BORNE PATHOGENS EXPOSURE PLAN

• If a staff member is exposed to bodily fluids here is what will follow:

• After you report the incident to your CD, they will determine if it is necessary to complete a staff injury/illness report about the incident

• The CD, with employees input, will make recommendations to prevent future incidents

• The Education Manager or Human Resources Manager will determine follow-up with employees physician as needed
