    What is the Bloom Box?

    a collection of fuel cells, skinny batteries that useoxygen and fuel to create electricity with noemissions

    made of sand that is baked into diskette-sizedceramic squares and painted with green and blackink

    The fuel cells are stacked into brick-sized towerssandwiched with metal alloy plates

    The Bloom Box consists of these fuel cell stacks thatare housed in a refrigerator-sized unit

    How does it work?

    Oxygen is drawn into one side of the unit,and fuel (fossil-fuel, bio-fuel, or even solarpower can be used) is fed into the otherside

    The two combine within the cell andproduce a chemical reaction that createsenergy with no burning, no combustion,and no power lines

    Power Capacity

    Each Bloom Energy fuel cellis capable of producingabout 25W... enough to

    power a light bulb.

    For more power, the cellsare sandwiched, along withmetal interconnect platesinto a fuel cell "stack". Afew stacks, together aboutthe size of a brick, is enoughto power an average home.

    Who invented???

    Bloom Box is the inventionof Indian scientist Mr. K.RSridhar who is working atNASA for Space researchOperations

    The device was originallyinvented to produce oxygenon Mars but when NASAscrapped the Mars mission,

    Sridhar reversed his Marsmachine, pumping oxygenin, instead of makingoxygen

    Costs

    The current cost of 100 kW Bloom Box is $700,000800,000.But In the mass production of home-sizedunits, Sridhar hopes cost of each home sizedBloom box to under $3000.

    The capital costs according to NewsWeekmagazine is $78 per watt.

    Present Customers

    o According to Sridhar that first 100 kWBloom Energy box were planted toGoogle head office in July 2008.

    o Other customers with operating BloomBoxes are Wal-Mart (WMT), FedEx(FDX), and Staples (SPLS).

    o These companies quietly purchasedBloom Boxes and have been usingthem to produce part of theirelectricity for about 18 months.

    Sridhar has ambitious goals for his Bloom Box,planning not only to place it in every Americanhome in 10 years, but also in homes in Africa, India,and China

    when the price of the refrigerator size bloom boxesdrops enough for any village to afford one, "power

    to the people" will have real meaning
