QUICK SIX-Bloomsburg has won 14 straight home openers since 1999.-Saturday’s game is the 24th meeting all-time between BU and Cal. The Huskies are 13-8-2 all-time vs. the Vulcans and 8-2-1 at home.-BU and Cal have not met since the 2010 NCAA Division II Playoffs when the Huskies scored a first round win on the road, 28-26.-No PSAC team allowed fewer points in Week 1 than the seven surrendered by the Huskies in a 24-7 win at Stonehill. Gannon also matched that mark in a 23-7 victory over Southern Connecticut State.-The Huskies turnover margin of +5 after one week is good for third in the nation. Only Ohio Dominican and Notre Dame (OH) rank higher within Division II (+6). -Bloomsburg won the time of possession battle at Stonehill 33:19-26:41 including 19:38-10:22 during the second half.

THE GAMEPerennial powers from the PSAC East and West meet on Saturday when the Huskies welcome California (PA) to Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium. This time, though, the matchup means a little extra as the crossover contest will count toward the PSAC divisional standings. The PSAC adopted a new rule for 2014 with mandated conference matchups in all sports counting toward the division standings. In past years, crossover games were considered “non-conference” games.

While the Huskies have had a long run at the top of the Eastern Division, the Vulcans have been dominant in the Western Division. Saturday’s game pairs the top PSAC’s two winningest programs over the last 15 years – Bloomsburg has scored 132 victories since 2000 while Cal is next in line with 114. Only IUP (111) and West Chester (103) have also eclipsed the 100-win mark over that time period.Both teams recorded wins in Week 1 – while Bloomsburg made the eight-hour trip for a 24-7 win at Northeast-10 member Stonehill, California stayed at home and defeated CIAA member Virginia State, 33-24.

SERIES HISTORYThe Huskies and Vulcans first met in 1928 and have played 23 more times since then with Bloomsburg owning a 13-8-2 all-time series lead. Conference scheduling rules have kept the two teams apart during the regular season since 2009 when Bloomsburg won at Cal, 17-7, in Week 2. The schools met again in the 2010 NCAA Division II Playoffs with the Huskies again coming away victorious, 28-26, at Adamson Stadium. Cal has not made the trip to Redman Stadium since 2008 when the Huskies won, 24-17.

ONE OF THE NATION’S BESTThe Huskies have been one of the most successful programs in not only the PSAC and the region but the nation over the past decade-plus. Since the beginning of the 2000 season, only three Division II teams have more victories than Bloomsburg’s 132.

}5 - The five turnovers caused by the Huskies defense were the most since forcing Edinboro into five turnovers in Week 2 last season (a 47-35 BU victory).

LAST MEETINGThough the Huskies and Cal U have met sparingly through the years, the two teams have met in multiple big games, including the last meeting - a date in the 2010 NCAA Division II Playoffs.

On that day, then redshirt freshman running back Franklyn Quiteh ran for 141 yards and scored two touchdowns in a 28-26 victory in the first round of the national playoffs.

It was a back-and-forth affair with Cal having an opportunity to tie late. The Vulcans drove 93 yards in 14 plays for a touchdown to make the score 28-26 with 57 seconds left, but the two-point conversion failed allowing the Huskies to prevail.

BU and Cal U also met in the 2008 NCAA Playoffs and the 1984 PSAC title game.



CALL ‘EM CAPTAINSThe Huskies have named their tri-captains for the 2014 season – redshirt senior Justin Shirk as well as redshirt juniors Tim Kelly and Ryan Geiger. Shirk also served as a captain last year.

Kelly will enter his third season as the starting quarterback after leading the Huskies to a 20-4 record as the starter the past two years including back-to-back NCAA Playoff berths.

Geiger is in his second year as a starter but will shift to center from guard this fall after starting all 12 games at left guard.

PRESEASON RANKINGSThe Huskies are nationally-ranked in a number of preseason polls. Bloomsburg ranks No. 24 in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Top 25 and No. 25 in the D2Football.com poll. The Huskies also stand No. 17 in The Sporting News preseason Top 25 and were slotted No. 23 by Lindy’s Sports.

RANKED AGAINNational recognition among the Division II pollsters is nothing new for the Huskies. With their Top 25 rankings this preseason, Bloomsburg has now been ranked in at least one national Top 25 poll since the 2000 season.

The Huskies have been ranked in every AFCA Top 25 since October 11, 2010 – a span of 46 consecutive polls.

NEXT GAMEThe Huskies hit the road once more against another PSAC West opponent, making the trip across the state to Erie for a date with Mercyhurst next Saturday at noon. It will be the first meeting between the Huskies and Lakers since the 2010 NCAA Division II Playoffs.

LUCKY SEVENLast Saturday marked the seventh time in head coach Paul Darragh’s head coaching tenure that the Huskies have allowed 14 points or less.

MOVIN’ ON UPBloomsburg jumped forward in both national NCAA Division II polls this week, advancing three places to No. 21 in the AFCA poll while leaping six spots to No. 19 in the D2Football.com rankings.

ROOKIES DEBUT UP FRONTThe Huskies had a different look than in previous years when they debuted Week 1 at Stonehill as three players made their first collegiate starts on the offensive line. Christian Whiteside (LG), Nick Reed (RG) and John Garland (RT) all started for the first time, helping pave the way for the Huskies to finish with 211 yards rushing and the line also did not allow a sack.

FINLEY MAKES MOST OF OPPORTUNITYDamin Finley made the most of his first career start in Week 1 at Stonehill. Starting in place of senior D.J. Robinson at cornerback, Finley caused two turnovers – first he delivered a forced fumble and fumble recovery on the first play from scrimmage by the Skyhawks. Later in the first quarter, he made a nifty tip and interception on a deep ball attempt from Stonehill. He finished the game with a career-high seven tackles.

WINNING VS. THE WESTBloomsburg has been dominant in PSAC crossover contests over the past 15 years. Since 1999, the Huskies are 43-14 vs. PSAC West teams and are 23-5 against Western foes at Redman Stadium.

WELCOME BACK EDDIERunning back Eddie Mateo made his return Week 1 at Stonehill after returning to school for his senior season after sitting out last year due to personal reasons. Mateo shook off the rust by rushing for 105 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns. Listed third on the Huskies depth chart, Mateo was the “hot hand” at Stonehill, earning the most carries out of the Bloomsburg running back stable.

THIS TIME THEY COUNTUnder new rules adopted by the PSAC for this season in all sports, all mandated conference matchups will count toward divisional standings. As such, the Huskies PSAC crossover contests against Western Division members California (PA) and Mercyhurst will go toward BU’s PSAC East standings. The lone exception will be the final week of the season - the PSAC slate ends the season with a week of crossovers including the PSAC Championship Game, but those games will not count toward the divisional standings as the title game will be set following the penultimate week of the season.

SHIRK NAMED ATHLETE OF THE WEEK}Senior middle linebacker Justin Shirk had a hand in three of the five turnovers forced by the Bloomsburg University defense in a 24-7 Week 1 win at Stonehill and has been named as PSAC East Co-Defensive Athlete of the Week for his efforts.

Shirk finished with nine tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and a sack. Five of his tackles were solo stops.

He first made his presence felt late in the first quarter, getting a hand on a pass from Stonehill quarterback Moe Regan. The deflected pass landed in the hands of Huskies defensive back Donovan Morris ending a Skyhawks drive inside the Bloomsburg 40-yard line.

Two key defensive plays made by Shirk in the second half helped change the complexion of the game. Shirk caused Stonehill running back Colin Markus to fumble early in the fourth and then later had a strip sack resulting in another turnover - both of which turned into Huskies touchdowns.

Shirk shares the weekly conference honors with West Chester defensive back Al-Hajj Shabazz (two blocked punts, interception vs. New Haven).

‘MONEY’ PLAYSThe Huskies had 14 “money plays” at Stonehill in Week 1 - plays that resulted in a first down or a touchdown. Eddie Mateo led the way with eight “money” plays while Dai’Shon Munger had three. Chad Hoffman had the team’s lone fourth down “money” reception while Will Wagner had potentially the biggest “money” play - an eight-yard rush on 4th-and-3 out of a punt formation.

IN ELITE COMPANYThe run of success for the Huskies over the past 15 years is nearly unparalleled in college football. Bloomsburg has won seven or more games in 15 consecutive seasons – a streak that is impressive at any level. Only four schools in the divisions of NCAA (FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III) have a longer streak of seven or more victories – Florida State and Virginia Tech in the FBS; Northwest Missouri in Division II and Mount Union in Division III. The 15-year streak is also a PSAC record, surpassing the previous mark of 13 straight years set by IUP from 1984-1996.

ROAD SUCCESSThe Huskies have not been afraid of travel in recent years, posting a 24-7 record away from home since 2009 (.774). Bloomsburg won all five of its road games last season and have won seven consecutive regular season road games dating to 2012.

GROUND AND POUNDThe Huskies have had at least 30 rushing attempts in 49 straight games, dating back to Oct. 31, 2009 - a record that nearly was broken in Week 9 of 2013 when Bloomsburg ran exactly 30 times vs. Shippensburg.

RUNNING TO DAYLIGHTEntering this week’s game, Bloomsburg has an on-going streak of 33 straight games with at least one rushing touchdown – the last time the Huskies failed to run for a score came on Sept. 15, 2011 at IUP.

PUTTING UP THE POINTSThe Huskies are 107-3 when scoring 40 points all-time. Bloomsburg tied the school record of seven games with 40+points in 2013 (2005, 2007, 2012, 2013)..

RUN THE BALL, STOP THE RUNThe Huskies were nearly as adept at stopping the run in 2013 as they were rushing themselves. Bloomsburg ranked ninth in the nation in rush yardage allowed (89.9) and allowed only one player to rush for 100 yards or more a year ago, West Chester’s Rondell White in the NCAA Playoffs (113).

PREVIEWING 2014 -- QUARTERBACKRedshirt junior Tim Kelly has taken a strangle-hold on the position after winning a tight pre-season battle in 2012. Since, Kelly has helped guide the Huskies to a 20-4 record dur-ing his tenure under center and he has already begun to climb the program record books. He ranks fifth in career touchdown passes (39) and eighth in passing yards (3,890). Kelly, who completed over 58 percent of his pass attempts last year, also brings the ability to scramble – he rushed for 280 yards and six touchdowns in 2013.

Behind Kelly will be senior Brady Knerr along with newcomers Chris Palubinsky, a redshirt last year, and Ryan Henning, a transfer from Bucknell.

PREVIEWING 2014 - RUNNING BACKParamount to the Huskies success over the past decade and a half has been their ability to pound the football at will. Never has that been more evident than the past two years - the Huskies posted the top two rushing seasons in PSAC history back-to-back – 2012 (3,789 yards) and 2013 (3,762 yards). Much of that work was done on the legs of Franklyn Quiteh, who finished his brilliant career second all-time in NCAA Division II history with 7,523 yards rushing.

Quiteh followed in the footsteps of previous stars such as Jamar Brittingham and Irv Sigler before him and the Huskies will seek to con-tinue the tradition of success with their power run game.

“We have depth in the backfield. You can’t afford not to have that,” Darragh said. “We feel we have at least four or five guys who are capable. We may not have someone who puts up the sheer numbers of Franklyn, but as a group we feel they give us the skill set we need at tailback we need to be successful.”

Redshirt junior Dai’Shon Munger served as Quiteh’s primary compliment for much of the season last year, rushing for 644 yards and two scores on 120 carries. Also returning is red-shirt sophomore Joe Parsnik who impressed in his debut last fall, averaging 6.1 yards per carry while finishing with 513 yards and three touchdowns as he earned an expanded role late in the season.

RECORD-SETTING 2013The 2013 season was one for the record books in terms of offense for the Huskies. Bloomsburg finished the year with the most points scored in school history (474) and the most-ever yards of total offense (5,895). The Huskies also compiled 11 30-point games and recorded 500 or more yards of total offense eight times in 2013, both school records. The Huskies also ran for 350+ yards in a game six times last year, breaking the old record of four set in 2004.

BUCKING THE TRENDWhile much of football has shifted to a pass-happy offensive attack, the Huskies are finding more success than ever with their tried and true rushing game. Bloomsburg has posted the top two rushing seasons in PSAC history back-to-back – 2012 (3,789 yards) and 2013 (3,762 yards). Bloomsburg averaged 313.5 yards per game on the ground last fall.

sophomore Lawrence Elliott Jr. who shifts to the backfield after landing on the All-PSAC East second team as a kick returner while also seeing limited time at wide receiver last season as a true freshman. Redshirt freshman Altarique Mosley-Dew saw extensive time in this year’s spring game while Rasheen Tookes will also battle for carries.

At fullback, the Huskies lost graduated senior Matt Wenrich but are con-fident in senior Brody Myers and junior Derek Burkhard who return from last year. Redshirt freshmen Eric McCracken and Wade Mastrog have also impressed the coaching staff.

PREVIEWING 2014 - WIDE RECEIVERA young group of wide outs will vie for time this season. Redshirt junior Connor Gades leads the group after starting all 12 games with 23 recep-tions and three touchdowns last year. Behind him there are opportunities for playing time. Redshirt junior Trent Daniels saw time in 11 games last year while redshirt sophomore Chad Hoffman makes the transition to wide receiver from quarterback – a move that has served the Huskies well in the past as Gades and last year’s leading receiver Glenn Hutton Jr. also were recruited as quarterbacks.

PREVIEWING 2014 - TIGHT ENDDepth, experience and options would be words to describe the Huskies situation at tight end. Redshirt junior Shane Quinn split the starting du-ties last year while Aaron Allison added an element to the passing game in his debut season last fall. Younger players Nate Hoenl and Simon Patrick Williams add to an already deep position.

PREVIEWING 2014 - OFFENSIVE LINEThe impeccable trio of Clarke, Feiler and Steck were a model of consis-tency and excellence for the Huskies in recent years, accounting for a combined 133 starts. With those three spots vacated, Bloomsburg returns two lineman starters from the nation’s fifth-ranked rushing offense in juniors Ryan Geiger and Dakota Hoagland.

Geiger figures to move to center from left guard, though redshirt sopho-more Jesse Osborne could win the center job and allow Geiger to remain at guard. Hoagland continues to hold down the right tackle spot with Jon Garland, Shawn Secola and Nick Pellechia fighting for time at tackle as well. Christian Whiteside saw extended playing time last year and will be in the mix at guard along with Nick Reed and Greg Rommel.

PREVIEWING 2014 - DEFENSIVE LINEThe Huskies have a large void left by the graduation of sack leader Web-ster who led the nation in sack yardage last year while racking up 12.5 sacks before being drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fourth round of May’s NFL Draft. Also gone is all-conference defensive tackle Kennedy.

The cupboard is far from bare, however. Shawn Mitchell reprises his start-ing role alongside Jeremiah Lowery and Ezra Ranco in the middle while Bill LaBadie and Roy Dennis fight for expanded roles at tackle. At the ends, the Huskies will miss Webster but certainly do not lack for capable players ready to step up.

Senior David McFadden started all 12 games opposite Webster last year and is joined by two potential key returning teammates – Tony David and Matt Heilig who each missed all of last season due to injury. David, who suffered a knee injury during the first series of last year’s season opener, had 41 tackles and four sacks in 2012. Heilig returned for the spring after playing 22 games his first two years in maroon and gold.

Senior Dylan Stair and redshirt sophomore Joe Wetty played in every game last year and is also joined by newcomers Marquez Norford and Scott Beltz.

PREVIEWING 2014 - LINEBACKERIn a defense with returners at every position, no spot is in better shape than linebacker where the Huskies did not lose anyone from last year’s conference champions.

Senior Justin Shirk made a nearly flawless transition to middle linebacker last year, compiling the third-most tackles in Bloomsburg history (123) and owns 272 tackles and 23.5 tackles for loss during his Huskies tenure.

Senior Dylan Spangler started 11 games with 58 tackles a year ago at the buck linebacker position while Garrett Pope started eight games at the will spot. Andrew Harris returns after finishing second on the team with 72 stops last fall.

Bernadain Decena and Tyrik Clary, a transfer from Shippensburg, also add depth on the outside.

PREVIEWING 2014 - DEFENSIVE BACKThe secondary is an area the Huskies will need to improve on from last year, allowing opponents 299.2 yards per game through the air in 2013.

Gary Postell, an All-PSAC East selection last year, returns at cornerback along with fellow starter D.J. Robinson who had four interceptions last season. Behind them, Damin Finley, Travon Pugh and Mark Collins Jr. will work into the rotation while Miles Williams could play an important role after missing last season due to injury.

Senior Tomas Cabrera missed the spring due to injury, but returns at safety along with Tyler Knoblauch who had 43 tackles and two intercep-tions a year ago. Donovan Morris brings the ability to play nickel as well as corner while Jerrin Toomey impressed during the spring game. New-comer Eric Schwartz will also add depth.

PREVIEWING 2014 - SPECIAL TEAMSOf all the members of last year’s senior class, kicker Dan Fisher may be the most overlooked. The PSAC’s all-time leader in field goals, PAT’s and kicking points, Fisher was nearly automatic when he stepped on the field.

Will Wagner averaged 39.0 yards per punt with 16 punts placed inside the 20 as a true freshman last year and also returns. Elliott was a star on the kick return team also as a true freshman and brings big play ability again this fall.

Last Saturday, the Huskies trailed 7-3 at the half but came back to win 24-7. This was only the third game since 1993 they had been behind at the half - scoring three or fewer points - and still won. The other two were at Homecoming in 2000 and 2003. In the first game, Bloomsburg trailed Millersville 7-0 and won 21-20, and in 2003 they were behind 17-0 versus Kutztown, but triumphed 35-28 in overtime. The seven points scored by Stonehill were the least allowed in a season opener since Ashland scored seven at Redman Stadium in 2009. They were the least in a road game to begin the year since the Huskies won 22-0 at Wayne State in 1997. Bloomsburg has won 14 consecutive home openers since 1999. The school’s all-time record in home openers in 116 seasons from 1892-2013 is 73-38-5. The Huskies in 40 seasons at Redman Stadium since 1974 are 139-68-4, a winning percentage of .668. Over the past 15 seasons (1999-2013) versus the PSAC West, Bloomsburg has a record of 43-14, with a record of 23-5 at home and 20-9 on the road. The upcoming game with California is the 24th in the series between the two schools, dating back to the first meeting in 1928. Bloomsburg’s record in the previous 23 games is 13-8-2, 8-2-1 at home, 5-5-1 on the road, and 0-1 at a neutral site.

HUSKIES PICKED THIRD IN PSAC EAST PRESEASON POLL}Defending conference champion Bloomsburg ranked third in the PSAC preseason rankings. It marks the 19th straight season that the Huskies have ranked in the top three of the Eastern Division preseason coaches poll.

West Chester captured seven first-place votes while East Stroudsburg also had one. In the West, IUP snagged five top tallies with the remaining three going to California (PA).

That left the two divisional champions from 2013 - Bloomsburg and Slippery Rock - each selected third in their re-spective polls.

BIG SHOES TO FILLLast year’s senior class was perhaps the most decorated in school history, taking the second-most victories over any four-year period in school history (39) while capturing numerous All-Conference, All-Region and All-American awards. Last year alone, the quartet of running back Franklyn Quiteh, defensive end Larry Webster and offensive linemen Brian Clarke and Matt Feiler claimed 16 All-American awards among them. Quiteh was named the Harlon Hill Award Winner as the nation’s top player while Brian Clarke was a finalist for the Gene Upshaw Award as the nation’s top lineman; Webster a finalist for the Cliff Harris Award as the top small school defensive player and place-kicker Danny Fisher also a finalist for the national place-kicker of the year award. Quiteh and Fisher own several all-time PSAC career records including rushing yards as well as field goals respectively.

Leading wide receiver Glenn Hutton Jr. and starting fullback Matt Wenrich and standout defensive back Jonathan Patrick and defensive lineman Chris Kennedy also graduated.

At running back Dai’Shon Munger is the leading returning rusher with 5.4 yards per carry last year. Joe Parsnik also returns (513 yards, 6.1 ypc). Senior Eddie Mateo is back after returning to school for his senior season and has two 1,000-yard seasons under his belt in 2011 and 2012.

The offensive line will be much younger in 2014, with Christian Whiteside, Nick Reed and John Garland expected to step into starting roles. Whiteside has the most experience of the group, appearing in 11 games last year and three in 2011.

Veterans will figure at the defensive end spots where the Huskies remain deep with David McFadden (70 career tackles, 2.5 sacks) and returning seniors Tony David and Matt Heilig who each missed 2013 with injury.

At place-kicker, Braden Drexler handled kickoff duties a year ago and will fight with newcomer Tyler Smith, a former soccer player at Bloomsburg, for field goal duties this year.

Fullback is also occupied by a veteran – redshirt senior Brody Myers.

CAPTAIN SHIRKRedshirt senior Justin Shirk is in his second season as a captain for the Huskies and is the unquestioned leader of the defense. After shifting to middle linebacker for last year, he responded with the third-most tackles in BU single season history (123). A former two-sport star in maroon and gold, Shirk won the 2012 NCAA Division II national javelin championship to become the first national champion in men’s track and field in school history.

Paul DarraghH E A D C O A C H • S E C O N D S E A S O NPaul Darragh was named head coach of Bloomsburg University on Dec. 6, 2013 after being ap-pointed as interim head coach in February 2013. Overall he will be starting his 18th season with the Huskies in 2014.

During the 2013 season Darragh led the Huskies to a 10-2 record, a PSAC championship and a berth in the NCAA playoffs as part of the strongest season for any first-year head coach in school history. Following the season he was honored as PSAC Eastern Division Coach of the Year.

Under Darragh’s leadership, the Huskies had four All-Americans including Harlon Hill Award-winning running back Franklyn Quiteh who was honored as the top player in Division II. Blooms-burg also had national finalists for the Cliff Harris Award (top small school defensive player, Larry Webster), Gene Upshaw Award (lineman of the year, Brian Clarke) and Fred Mitchell Award (top place-kicker, Danny Fisher). Following the season, defensive end Larry Webster became the sixth player in Bloomsburg history to be selected in the NFL Draft as he was picked in the fourth round by the Detroit Lions.

Darragh previously served as the Huskies’ defensive coordinator for 16 years under legendary head coach Danny Hale. Under Darragh’s leadership the Huskies’ defense has ranked in the top-half of the PSAC in total defense seven of the past 11 seasons, including back-to-back second place finishes in 2000 and 2001 and a second place in 2009. The Huskies have also ranked among the best in the PSAC in run defense finishing first or second five times, including second in two of the last four seasons.

The 2009 Huskies finished third nationally in scoring defense (13.36/game), pacing the PSAC. BU also led the conference in sacks, ranking 14th nationally (3.09 per game). In 2010 the Huskies were eighth in Division II in rushing defense (85.38 yards per game). Overall under Darragh’s leader-ship, the Bloomsburg defense finished in the top-15 in NCAA Division II six times since the 2000 season.

Darragh has also coached 58 first team All-PSAC performers, 11 All-Americans and two PSAC East Defensive Players of the Year in Anthony Smith (2009) and Mike Varanavage (2010). Prior to Bloomsburg, Darragh worked for two years at Indiana (PA) as the linebackers coach. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Temple from 1987-89. From there, Darragh coached the linebackers at Northeastern and Gannon before being promoted to defensive coordi-nator at Gannon.

He moved from Gannon to the defensive coordinator post at William Paterson College before join-ing the IUP staff. A three-year starter and captain for Temple, he graduated in 1985 after earning All-East honors as an inside linebacker.
