Blu-ray disc
Blu-ray Disc is a digital optical disk data storage format designed to supersede the DVD format, in that it is capable of storing high-definition video resolution (1080p).
This format was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group representing makers of consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion pictures.
Sony unveiled the first Blu-ray Disk prototypes in October 2000, and the first prototype player was released in April 2003 in Japan.
Afterwards, it continued to be developed until it’s official release in June 2006.
As of June 2008, more than 2,500 Blu-ray Disk titles were available in Australia and the United Kingdom, with 3,500 in the United States and Canada.
What is blu-ray disc?
Blu-ray (not Blue-ray) also known as Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world’s leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, HP, Hitachi, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Sony).
The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high- definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data.
The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up 25GB on a single- layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc.
ABOUT WHAT IS BLU-RAY?
Various hard coating technologies make Bly ray disc most durable and family -friendly”
Hard-coating technology provides resistance to:- Finger prints- Marks- Scratches- Dust
Much more ROBUST than today’s polycarbonate-based CD/DVD’s (and HD DVD’s)
BLU RAY ‘S DURABILITY ADVANTAGE
SINGLE LAYER :- Can hold data up to 25/27 GB that means 2
hrs of HD video or about 13 hrs of standard video.
DOUBLE LAYER :- Can hold data up to 50 GB that means 4.5
hrs of HD video or more than 20 hrs of standard video.
TYPES OF BD:
BD Data is placed on top of a
1.1 mm thick polycarbonate layer
Doesn’t suffer from BIREFRINGENCE
Doesn’t suffer from DISC TILT
Hard coating is placed outside to protect from scratches or fingerprints
DVD Data is sandwiched b/w
two polycarbonate layers, each 0.6 mm thick
Suffer from BIREFRINGENCE
Suffer from DISC TILT
No such hard coating is placed
COMPARISON IN BUILDING BD AND DVD
With BD we can: Record HDTV without any quality loss Instantly skip to any spot on disc Record one program while watching other on the
disc Create playlists Edit or reorder programs recorded on disc Automatically search for an empty space on the
disc to avoid recording over a program Access to web to download subtitles and other
extra features And many more…
FEATURES OF BD
More capacity, Density and Performance More Industry Support/Consumer Reach
(BDA has 140+ members) More Durable More Interactive User Experience More Flexible Content Protection: AAC, BD+
Renewability Technology and ROM Mark
DO MORE WITH BLU…
